Viking Lass
The Hull registered trawler 'Cornelius' has been zigging off Fitful Head for a couple of days. Any idea what she is fishing for, how much she has hovered up?
Kavi Ugl
Just looked at her and she's one of those horrible Flags of Convienience super trawlers which catch saithe. It has been heart-breaking to see so many "foreign" fishing boats invading wir waters over the past two weeks with the mackrel fishery and as you say "hoovering" up as much as they can get from the quota. One day I counted just 4 Shetland whitefish boats while the rest of approx 30 were Irish, Scottish, German, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian and those horrible Flags of Convenience fishing boats and super trawlers. Even with wir own 5-6 pelagic boats at sea now we're swamped by the number of non-Shetland boats. Just imagine if they were all Shetland boats and even 80% of the mackrel caught had to be landed in Shetland...... orkneypaul
Dutch ship with approximatly 18% of the Englandshire pelagic quota, will be fishing mackerel just now.
Ghostrider
Some reckon yun brute has as much as 25% of the quota. Dutchies have done well out of our fish for centuries, seems they're no done yet. See noo, if the UK, and certainly Shetland was outside the EU, we could be selling licences to beggars laek yun for a lot of money, instead of letting them have a free for all at it and getting nothing back. Viking Lass
Thanks just had another look, mostly Irish, British and Norske, with another half dozen Norskes steaming in this direction. Must be a good harvest. Where are our local boats?
Viking Lass
Does Shetland not have a 3-5-20?mile fishing limit round these shores? We should have.
Kavi Ugl
I see the Antarctic north of Skerries. Sadly, as yet we have no legally recognised fishing boundaries, just the Shetland Shellfish Regulating Order. fionajohn
this is another result of being in the EU they set their own parimiters and nobody can figure out what it means ...it suits them as their foreign backers are paying over the odds for dubious quotas from unknown sellers
