  4. is it possible to breakdown the £25million benefit? It sounds pretty vauge on the surface...
  5. surely baronless treeless landscapes are what make Shetland a stark and emotive place (visually) ??
  6. What about the old hostel near the toft ferry?! No noise restrictions out there! Yes, Ive played cab vol, the sound is abysmal.
  7. Can anyone settle the argument, can Shetland afford(in real cash terms rather than artistic) a purpose built venue or not? Also, is Mareel the final vision for a music venue, or is it "the next best option" ? How about resurrecting st clements hall!! Was the old "somewhar else" ever considered as a possibility? too late now of course. I think a Cabaret Voltaire (Edinburgh) in Shetland would be a good idea..decent size, etc etc.
  8. I'm not into this online slagging of SIBC and Ian who runs it, he has succesfully managed to keep a business going for 40 years, and good luck to him. Its too easy to make cheap comments on these forums.
  9. Not too familiar with the presidents band. I think loads of bands would come to Shetland if asked, and if there was a decent venue...cough cough Loads of bands now struggle to sell albums, however established they may be or have been, so rely on funding/wages from tours and merchandising...recording deals may be for 1 album only and a short tour, with little left over, so bands need to get clever about marketing their product and playing in far off places like shetland. A few gigs in Shetland would earn a band some cash, plus cheapo tickets on the northlink. I know flints pays decent cash for a band. Compare that to what bands south (average £50 a gig for a whole band)make its rich pickings. Of course, its not all about the cash, but you need some incentive to continue to attract bands up. How about another rock festival / ....planning persmission etc etc and all that is now problematic, but aim high.. I think it would be very inventive for a band to do a proper UK tour, beginning at the v.top at Shetland, then orkney...you catch my drift. Cheers

    The Knife

yeah thats the band, I like them, been listening to them of late "heartbeats" is good. Can you recommend any other bands of this ilk?
  11. I found driving about around Shetland relaxing, but after a while like anything else, it got pretty dull. Mon-Fri theres not a lot going on in the town centre, so me and the girlfriend where like "fancy a run to burra?". Its always been strangely quiet/dead in lerwick through the week, I suppose everyone is using the sports facilities or something...but what if you arent into sport....

    The Knife

Anyone into a band called The Knife? Pretty good!
  13. He looks remarkably like Neil Riddel, I assume they are siblings! Promotion in the post maybe?
  14. a weekend would be more sense in terms of travelling up to shetland for it, for those coming fae sooth, as less time to take of work. But its a tradition that helps make it feel that extra special having it on a tuesday.
  15. As a Shetland ex-pat, and having been out several times before in Up Helly Aa, I always get a twinge of regret not being up for it and involved. Anyone else feel that? Trying to explain it to work colleagues here in Edinburgh is pretty much useless, I think they think Im off my head! Its carry on like no other!! (*** Mod - Merged with existing UHA thread ***)
  16. I think its a reactive and common response from our councillors. The issue of binge drinking needs addressing as mr ness points out. I would rather stay in the pub till 3, as its a better craic than wandering about the cross. Saying that, I would prob save more money with shorter hours
  17. this thing keeps crashing!! i've met U2@radio1...2000.competition winner Oasis in NYC 1999 (except noel) Mark stent and Howie Weinberg...chillpeppers U2 madonna fame - producers Therapy? in a bar after garage gig in glasgow StellaStarr* after cab voltaire gig in edinburgh Shook morrisseys hand at a gig Ian brown back stage at clickimin...i think everyone did tho... dereck riordan, phil mcguire, russ anderson, stevie crawfrod....saw paul le guen the other day! cheers leno
  18. I'd suggest taking the boat out and goin for some olliks
  19. but are the "washing machine" really good? they seem to have taken the underground rock scene in shetland by storm...
  20. Honestly, What on earth is going on when a guy just doing is job gets it in the neck like that? if anything Davy is going beyond his call of duty, and rightly so. Good luck with the rest of your work Davy, and don't let the B******* grind you down, poorleno
  21. hey there my old band "faceless crowd" recorded there in 1996 with Richard Chaff. Sad to see the old place crumble to much, but good luck with the new studio. Tom.
  22. Hey vailron, Bullying at work in my experience can come from all levels..usually the subtle bullies are the worst, the ones that make the snidey comments, only afterwards you realise how hurtful they can be. Shetland is probably a bad place for WPB(work place bullying) as there is often no-where to turn for people. Often managers etc are all linked to each other..especially in the same industry/department. I've also witnessed first hand, people being hand picked over others for positions, not based on ability, but purely on the lenghth of time they have hung around for. Chin up, and dont let the boobalubes grind you down. Leno
