Yeah, that's exactly what they are. Usually what I end up with when I publish is the .exe file, which is all the scripts for controlling the app, using external media files and controlling any hardware devices (webcams, microphones etc.) that might be needed. I also have all the necessary media files (usually wavs and Quicktime movies) in a seperate folder which the .exe file looks in when it needs to play something. Incidentally, what video players are available for Linux, and what formats can they handle?

Thanks for that trouty. What I currently do is use Runtime Revolution to publish stand-alone apps as .exe files. The applications are interactive multimedia games (for kids really). I'm presuming that, using Revolution, I can just publish the Linux equivalent of an .exe file and run that as a base application. Am I living in dreamland?

    Linux

Thanks guys. I'm tempted to have a go at something like Gentoo, even if it does mean a lot of head scratching. I really want to get to the stage where I can configure a distro to be as simple or as complex as I want it to be. The reason for all this is that I'm fed up using WindowsXP based systems for interactive, kiosk type installations at my work at Glasgow Science Centre. They're really unpredictable and require a fair bit of maintenance. What I want is a super-slim, stable OS that will do what it needs to and no more, and that will just sit there and do it's job 24/7 without the need for constant tinkering.
  4. Anybody (trout) got any good links to resources for Linux beginners? And I do mean absolute novice stuff
  5. I'm one of them. I would never describe myself as vegetarian though. I do eat some dead animals. Just not land based ones. I allways wondered where insects stand? Would you eat them? Yeah, probably. I don't have any absolute moral issue with killing and eating anything. If I was living in Shetland and getting lamb from somebodys croft that I knew had been humanely raised and killed, I would eat it. I just don't like intensive meat production methods, we don't need to eat as much meat as we do in the developed world. And buying from supermarkets, you never have any idea how the meat was produced, so I just avoid it all. Most of it is low grade crap that I wouldn't want to eat anyway. I know that eating fish is a bit contradictory, because intensive farming of fish is happening now as well. But catching fish from the open sea seems less exploitative to me somehow. And anyway, I would never claim to be making any big moral stand or preaching to anyone.........and I want to get some decent protein from somewhere........

  7. Ah, but they might be fried in dripping, making them suitable only for carnivors
  8. Hmmmmm. Legal, maybe, I don't know. Productive, certainly not. I think that would be a very rash move on Westminster's part if the SNP were to win a majority at Holyrood. It would surely prove finally that central government in London have only contempt for any real form of democracy and drive even more people towards the nationalist camp.
  9. If by that you mean: not wanting to be accused of libel by those you mentioned..........uh huh! You're absolutely right. We don't want to be accused of libel. What's your point caller?
  10. You're getting all excited aren't you trouty.
  11. When?! Where?! This is tremendous news. You better not be winding us up Mia

No idea. But the old thread about it is still very much open.
  15. If this does mean the demise of the SSP, it will indeed be a blow for widely representative politics droilker. I sincerely hope the party survives. The really sickening part is that it would appear to be the arrogance and self-obsession of one of the main architects of the SSPs success who has caused the division.
  16. As I said above, I agree with trouts assertion that "terrorist"/freedom-fighter organisations are bound to look on Britain as a target, given our involvement in various American led overseas misadventures. I also have no doubt that some security alerts are real enough. But the reality is that us proles have no way of knowing for sure, and I do believe the government (I use this term to refer to the above mentioned groups JustMe ) use this unknown fear to force us into complying unquestioningly with increasingly restrictive "security" measures. However, most of these measures amount to little more than shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted. JustMe is absolutely right in saying that we need to tackle these issues at the source. There are very good reasons why America and Britain are the subjects of these threats and not Ireland or Switzerland.
  17. Absolutely agree trout. My distrust of this government runs to a lot more than "terror" (I hate that term) alerts.
  18. There's a pretty large part of me that doesn't believe them. Probably about half.
  19. I feel the same way Ally. I totally understand that gut instinct, and it would take an awful lot to make me not side strongly with anybody who's up against Murdoch's empire. But 19 members of the SSP putting their names to a document claiming that Sheridan lied is pretty persuasive stuff. I'm afraid I'm beginning to believe that Tommy really has lost it.
  20. He makes points which cannot really be argued against, and, while I don't believe that shouting makes an argument any more persuasive, it's sometimes the only way to be heard when you're dealing with the image obsessed morons who present and program Sky News. I'm a little unsure of Galloway sometimes, but I'm with him 100% on this one.

    Coldcut

Bloody 'ell PB. I am humbled by your generosity. Cheers. That lot will take a while to get through

    Coldcut

Absolutely PB. They have a tremendous DIY ethic which I really admire a lot. "Dark Lady" bassline appeared at the start of the third tune to an immense roar and frantic jumping up and down by the audience. I reckon du plays it just as fast Get those links up you monkey!

    Coldcut

I saw Coldcut live last Friday night and was extremely impressed. They make very interesting and downright cool use of live VJing, along with the music. Backing up the sounds with very carefully syncronised video really makes for an intense live experience. They make it difficult to draw a line between gig and music video and I like that kind of messing with boundaries. Oh yeah, the tunes were absolutely rockin' too Anyone else seen them?
  24. Did you actually read the SSP statement Ally? One of the central points was that the whole Sheridan vs News International thing was a gross simplification of the situation, largely concocted by Tommy as a PR stunt.
