  1. I am one of the "great" visitors with family on the islands. I will PM you some links however. It is a pleasant thing to see, an incomer (future) who is not against turbines, it was pointed out very early in this thread and also a comment also within this thread, about a Shetland Radio broadcast about the number of "southern voices" compared to locals, against turbines. We have a similar thing here where I live, on a number of issues. We even have a group that travel the county and have made themselves heard around the country campaigning about turbines, even when there is no opposition. I look forward to them campaigning against the new MOD radars that can deal with turbines. Some projects pay towards new radar. Really, as I have maintained, it is about what is right for the particular area, sadly campaigns can get full of hot air and we see the responses witnessed earlier which are out of place. What does stand out is how quiet those for turbines are, or those who are not really caring. Perhaps they are unaware of the great flood of pestilence that is about to engulf them. Do you think the other three horsemen will come too?
  2. Uninhabitable? I doubt that a wind turbine has rendered a room unsuitable for living in because of a flicker. If that is the case I am quite upset that wind turbines have forced folk to abandon using rooms, losing a room for the duration of the life of the turbine sounds quite shocking. There are many occilations in nature and in the man made world.
  3. Cheeses, do you not read?!!!!! You really have taken lowered any though folk may have had about those opposing not listening. JayneSue was exclaiming on how it was initially unusual to hear such a noise that in her mind sounded like the sea on the beach when the place she lives is 50 miles from the sea. Anyhow, welcome to the forum JayneSue. I know a little about Todmorden, I used to drive a gritter from Burnley to the surrounding areas, it is rather nice. The turbines do not really look out of place. Another link I have with Todmorden is the community food growing, ours is not on the scale as the Increadible Edible but we do our best. enjoy the forum and I do hope you enjoy Shetland, it is really full of wonderful folk, they get some great visitors as well
  4. It is not about killing those who do not fit in with society in any form. It is simply a mechanism for those who can administer to them selves a cocktail of drugs at their choice to end the suffering they feel. While I agree that life is fantastic, for some it is not, they have had the best of it and wish to leave. If life is good, no need to destroy it, however, again I ask, why would you want someone to continue a miserable and painful existance beacause of your own personal fears of your own demise. Very few will understand the processes that folk who tread this path go through to meet the conclusion. What you fail to mention are the millions who consider this path and do not take it. I do find it upsetting that we are happy to see our loved ones in such a condition and are bound by fear to give them the final release from their condition at their request. I worry now that you will have the same attitude towards a living will, where folk again choose how far they go with the self preservation of life. I worry that you will go against that choice if you could that folk have made. I worry that we cling on to an ethos created by folk of lesser understanding but a determination to control in the name of a diety. It is your choice, and it is a choice you have. It is after all, my life. Folk need to be prepared to some degree for their passing in cases.
  5. Not one person from the UK has been prosecuted for taking someone to Dignitas. As we see from the Law, it is open but still needs to be amended especially if there is burden of proof that the patient wanted to end their life to relieve suffering. It would not be in the public interest to haul a distraught husband, wife or child before the courts for helping their loved one fulfill their last wishes, that to be able to pass away with Dignity. This though does need to be underpinned so as not to discriminate. http://www.cps.gov.uk/publications/prosecution/assisted_suicide_policy.html The few I have met who have now passed on by taking their own lives have been fully prepared and had planned every part of their demise. They did so before they had to get help, knowing that if they did, they could be putting someone at risk of further hurt.
  6. Sorry Paul, the last post sounded as if I was having a go at just you. All folk really want is the choice, they have it when they are able bodied and should do as well when they are less able to get around.
  7. In a survey in the USA, a large number of nurses admitted to manipulating opiate doses prescribed by doctors in order to releave the suffering experienced by patients. Their identities were not disclosed. This manipulation resulted in death. I would wonder if you include those who work in hospices as having an acute experience in death. This then throws up all sorts of other issues. I would hope that if someone is prescribed medication that they can voluntary take to end their own life is not the only reason listed as cause of death. What is woefully wrong is the way causes of death are reported by doctors. There is a serious shortfall of funding for research because of Doctors unwilling to report deaths properly outside of the hospital. With many patients with a life ending illness passing away at home or a hospice, they are not as acurately reported. With working and talking to a Peadiatric Brain Tumour charity, I found that funding, for what is one of the biggest killers of those under 40 with cancer is very seriously underfunded because of the failure of Doctors to report properly. So much so that the charity has funded a reserch project to the tune of £700,000. A sterling effort. I hope Paul you are not insisting that folk should not be afforded a choice in how and when they shuffle off and they should suffer the pais of life. As you should very well know, with some, pain cannot be relieved. The patien becomes cabbaged on high doses of opiates until their heart gives way under the stress or they, as you very well know, suffer multiple organ failure and die in a most horrid way. All there should be is a choice. Who are You to keep that from folk?
  8. Paul, after all, it is a personal choice. I do not understand why a person should continue to suffer because of the fears of others. The choice should be there for those who are unable to take their own lives if they wish to do so. What this does at the moment is discriminate against the disabled and forces loved ones into difficult situations. There are already mechanisms in place for those who lose mental capacity in the form of treatment agreements, they can dictate types of treatment at critical moments. Along side the assisted suicide debate is the right to a dignified existance.
  9. The first comment!?! This comment is crass. If you think this is worthy of evidence against, it could be that the situation was right for the person, if they ever existed. You need to be lucid and on top to be mentally able to go down this route. How is he a coward, he killed himself? He would have had to administer the chemicals himself. It could be viewed that this highlights the selfishness of the wife. Though, it would have been a testing time for both.
  10. Our Dad built a house within the walls of the cottage we had in town. Lining the innerwalls with reflective material and insulation on batons made a huge difference. The key was to maintain an airflow around the innerside of the external stone walls. These in places were 60 cm thick.
  11. I can only comment on Harrods. I have know folk who have used it as their everyday shop, though I feel it is generally a tourist thing, similar to Hamleys. I look forward now to visiting the Aywick shop next time I am up to see Unst.
  12. Wow, talk about doom and gloom. However, what is the difference between a doctor prescribing a lethal dose for the private use of the patient and one that throws themselves in font of a train? If you have been given six months to live, there is nothing to stop you from commiting suicide. If you are however disabled and cannot achieve the mechanics of ending your own life at your will, why then should you have that choice removed? Sounds very selfish. I remember having a copy of a report from the US, where they have progressed to allow an individuals choise recognised, the majority of those who opted for suicide were middle class academics or profesionals. http://public.health.oregon.gov/ProviderPartnerResources/EvaluationResearch/DeathwithDignityAct/Documents/year16.pdf http://public.health.oregon.gov/ProviderPartnerResources/EvaluationResearch/DeathwithDignityAct/Pages/index.aspx I have yet to see an argument against this, that will convince me that I would be abused into commiting suicide. As there will be protection against abuse of such nature, I hope that I will, when I have had enough, be able to end it in the company of my family and friends in surroundings of my choice and pleasing. I have seen, heard of and known too many folk that have gone to other lengths to end their own suffering, sadly, mostly alone, in horrid surroundings and affecting others state of mind. My friend sadly jumped infront of a train, he had cancer that was killing him and he was in excruciating pain, watching the video from the station that was used to identify him, you could see the pain and effort he put into this lonesome act. He died alone.
  13. The research into where it has been accepted does not show this.

  15. To be honest, the animal thing is folly really and a total red herring. Animals are mobile and can be moved. The article is also hearsay, no evidence. How ever much I detest suffering in the name of vanity, using caged wild preditors as the evidence that wind turbines harm them is complete tosh and as I said, a low act to try to prove a point.. You keep telling us that this is evidence, however, look at the videos produced by animal welfare groups where the acts claimed to be because of turbines happen without turbines. It is similar here, one Tory councillor claimed that installing a wind turbine would increase CO2 as dog walkers in the area would not want to walk their dogs their anymore and drive elsewhere, yet, in another part of the borough, the area within sight of an existing turbine is a doggy doo hot spot.
  16. It would depend I would guess on many factors on the amount of sunlight, time of day and time of year. Though there will be some, it is not true that it will last most of the day. It is right that a view cannot be compensated. Some may enjoy living so close to turbines.
  17. I look forward to Shetland leading the way with renewables, it can only be a good thing. Without the inter-connector renewables will pass shetland by, yup, wait until wave and tidal can earn enough to pay for the connector, by then I think the boat would have long sailed and any benefit passed back to Orkney and the West Coast. Thanks for the lesson and threat, much apreciated.
  18. Very little in comparison about the cable though.... from the OP, though initially just looking for problems.. It was mentioned from your partner and is of course very on topic. If there were no benefits to the community there may be more tangable protests. Regardless of your personal thoughts on community activities, the post was an example of community projects and not about the funding from the council, though I would guess you would stretch that further with the wind turbines being funded in part (a very small one) by the council and of course on topic. However, as the sales pitch has been about a benefit to the community and those who rely on these sorts of projects.
  19. Name and shame then but in another thread I hope...
  20. Perhaps that will reduce the intensive farming of mink for vanity. A very good thing. It will of course be a worry to those mink farmers throughout Shetland. The photos of the cages used to keep these animals in is shocking, I have passed this on to a group who will look into the company. How you can use such an industry to promote your non-wind turbine protest? It is reprehensible! It is, sickening! Many of your links you suggest do not seem to have any credible independant status. Still, I put it that these stories are accredited to wind turbines because folk in the vicinity do not want them and will jump on any difference in their lives totally attributed to turbines. With no direct proof, how will you convince us they are as bad as you say. As we are on this, Community projects enhance the community, this has been evidenced throughout the world. Bridge End Outdoor Centre CLAN Appeal Shetland CLAN in the Community Climb Shetland Community Mediation Team (Citizens Advice Bureau) Disability Shetland Gulberwick Together Community Group Lerwick & Bressay Parish Church Marc Hutchison Asthma Trust Moving On Employment Project Northmavine Community Shetland Alcohol and Drugs Partnership (SADP) Shetland Anglers Association Shetland Befriending Scheme Shetland Bereavement Support Service Shetland Canoe Club Shetland Caravan Club Shetland Carers Group Shetland Classic Motorcycle Club Shetland Clay Target Club ShetlandLive.com Shetland Pre-School Play Shetland Rotary Club Shetland Stroke Support Group St Magnus Episcopal Church The New Shetlander Unst Community Council Voluntary Action Shetland Volunteering in Shetland Whitedale Football Club Yell Community Council Just a few that enhance the community, I would guess if more money was available, there would be more... http://www.shetland-communities.org.uk/main/ It is a shame you can only think of yourself...
  21. Your evidence on this? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-business-18525763 As for the strain on the NHS, any news on this has been quite sparse, so in the household you live in, it will only be deemed a conspiracy. I agree there have been stress related illnesses, mainly brought up by the scaremongering of such groups whos names are not really what they are about it seems... http://www.newscientist.com/data/images/ns/cms/mg21628850.200/mg21628850.200-1_300.jpg http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg21628850.200-the-sickening-truth-about-wind-farm-syndrome.html#.U8O5rbGmU8k Reduction in house prices, is compensation not been offered? Now then, folk like money. It is only a problem if you have your house as an investment, the price of a "home" can not be measurable. Livestock unable to sleep? FFS. I have never heard so mush sharn. Sheep are OK next to motorways, A Roads, coastal areas, petrochemical plants, factories, they even appear contented when I see them grazing in the field next to the slaughterhouse situated between 2 motorways and a main A road.
  22. There have been several appearances and convictions for rape at that time, and his comment is correct as these have been reported to the courts. No where in this report does it mention outcomes. Make your complaint and we can see then the facts. You are even invited to report crimes instead of your chatter here, what you are suggesting could be a crime. Although this quote is about dick heads who cannot handle a drink in public, it is a comment that has been used before. For instance, when all these gypsies were offending in Brae.
  23. I would guess that they have already been dealt with as the detection on 15 of the rapes was reported among the figures for 2012/13, over a year ago.
  24. May get to have a look myself...
