  1. Hope you are right Marvin, of course it would not help much with this current problem in Edinburgh !
  2. Thanks for the detailed reply Marvin, esp the clarity on the existing fibre cables. Remain to be convinced about the costings of the project, obviously an alternate routing is required to give diversity, just think we could have benefited from a little more pressure down the political route...
  3. But there again would we be better waiting for the submarine cable to be repaired or the Sanday to Scousborough microwave link ?? A break in any of the submarine cables would not make any difference to service unlike the microwave link. Access to the Faroese cable with give Shetland resilient services on 3 different fibre optic cable connections to London. So are you saying there are 3 Faroese cables or 3 connections to 1 Faroese cable ?, also a bit worried about this :- ï‚· Full broadband service (at least 4-8Mbps) to 80% of Shetland population by 2011. ( from your pdf doc ) also this :- They are also thought to be reaching the limits of their capacity..... I sincerely hope Shetland Telecom is not starting to pump millions into this project on the premise that BT is thought to be reaching their capacity !
  4. Sorry to be a killjoy but the short answer is that it will make sausage all differance.... Oh dear, is that right?. Well, if it isn't going to help broadband speeds then I wonder what the point is in investing in it The point is that our illustrious Shetland Islands Council will be makin a few o " da toonies " happy people, and we will just plod on as we are at the moment...

  7. Yep, if I remember correctly cut off point for the half Meg broadband was just north of Valleyview so if your folks are back from there you should benefit from the upgrade. ( Ness o Sound you will get zilch ).
  8. Burravoe was upgraded back in July to speeds up to 8Meg, some houses in West Yell are too far out to get any broadband at all. Speed at Ulsta last w/end was averaging at 3886kbps. Might be of some help to read the associated forum on Yell and Fetlar upgrade. Best of luck with your battle with BT.
  9. Bring back da swinging sixties, just hitting " da ton " doon da back saand wi da auld vertical twin wi nae problems !!
  10. How to alienate the younger generation... Peerie bit o diplomacy geens a lang wye !
  11. Well you're not far off the mark there Ghostrider re the stoory plates, heard of an incident the other day where a young driver was followed into a one way street by a police car with blue light flashing. The car driver was asked to get out and then asked if he/she knew why he/she had been stopped. The car driver answered " no " then was asked to look at a number plate on a nearby vehicle and asked to " spot the differance ". Wait for it :- The letters on the number plate of the pulled in drivers car were " squint " !!!! and wirna both police officers really prood efter yun !
  12. Spinner72 I am assuming that the cable coming into your master socket ends there. The connection to your neighbour is a seperate pair of wires within the same cable so unless the cable has been squashed/damaged causing a contact fault then there is no way it can interfere with your own line.
  13. Patzel wrote :- So it might be faster (and cheaper) to visit someone in Lerwick instead of sending an email is that what you mean? As you seem to have a motor I was merely pointing out the costs of motoring in Shetland. ( approx £1.30 per litre ) plus ferries. Yep, stick to the e-mails and leave the car at home....
  14. swc123 posted :- Excuse my ignorance on this subject but will this benefit the whole of Shetland, in that we will all get better connection speeds and reliability, or will it just benefit certain locations within Shetland? The short answer is all this will not make one iota of a difference to you,me and Joe Bloggs ! This is purely for the big boys with the megabucks.. As long as you are stuck with the same pair of copper wires back to the same exchange nothing will change.
  15. As a guideline BT cheapest option 1 costs me about £34 a month which includes UK wide calls at anytime. Thats for 10gb per month usage. For another fiver you get the full antivirus plus 40gb per month. There are cheaper options from other ISP's. You can expect speeds up to 5MB in central Fetlar and lucky to scrape 1Meg at Funzie. Also consider the approx 100 mile round trip costs to Lerwick inc ferry fares costing approx £8 return.
  16. Quote :- problem. I can only remember one significant landslide before 2000, and that was man-made. Depends how old you are, I can remember a fairly significant landslide at Maywick, Bigton back in the sixties, am sure some of the readers on this forum would be able to give more details.
  17. A good speed for greenholm, hidna heard there was a cable oot tae dere !. Winder if ony mackeral aboot ? So this may be the first customer upgrade off the Burravoe Exchange then. Would be interesting to know if you had heard from BT about the upgrade ?
  18. PHILMORT posted :- I'm interested, why the line has to stabilise. I would imagine one reason would be down to fluctuations in the line conditions on every individual pair of copper wires to the customers premises, as in low insulation and battery faults plus customers own wiring and equipment. If the exchange equipment was to immediately go on full speed and stay there then there would be no leeway when any further line condition appeared resulting in freezing and dropouts and unhappy customers. Much better that the initial speed " throttles back " after a day or so.
  19. 5meg pretty optimistic, around 3meg more likely but best of luck ! ( your initial speed will more than likely throttle back a bit after 24hrs ).
  20. Your silence is deafening Yala ! How did you get on with AOL ?
  21. some more bumf on this thread :- http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-10760069
  22. First thing first Yala I wid suggest you ring AOL 0844 499 5555 and request your MAC code ( migration autorisation code ). You need this to switch your ISP. This will send them into a blind panic and they will promise you the earth and ask why you are switching. Da rest is up tae dee, just dunna come aff da fone untill dey idder gie dee a new contract wi job number for da ADSL max or da MAC code ! Girse ! girse ! whit girse ?
  23. Re my last post, I would include Coppister ....
  24. Don't know where you live Yala but if you are only being offered 1meg then you would need to be in West Yell or possibly Gossabrough ?
