  1. IMHO immigration is now beginning to bite into politics in a big way. How different religions view democracy and free speech, is now beginning to have an effect on our politics. We are no longer mainly a Christian nation ,upholding Christian views, but a nation of mixed religion and mixed views that will oppose each other more and more in the future. Because we have this mix of political opinions ,Parliamentarians will be subject to more and more diversity ,creating more and more divisions in our society.
  2. Could be the SNP are trying to use the Westminster refusal for an independence referendum, for political point scoring reasons only and do not really intend to have a ballot on this issue at this point of time. Many SNP supporters will see any refusals, as interference from Westminster and thumbs down to the Tories in Scotland, hopefully giving them more votes . It would seem crazy to have an independent vote at this time when the the world economy is in crisis, and the UK is just getting accustomed to all the new Brexit arrangements, I'm sure the SNP also see it that way but as I said, it's a nice political ball to kick around to their advantage.
  3. Jo Swinson declined to respect that the Liberal party had a number of supporters who were in agreement of Brexit ,which she was very much against, and IMHO this cost her,her place in parliament and the Liberal leadership. Nichola Sturgeon would be well advised to take into account that not everyone who votes SNP necessarily want independence and may as a result vote elsewhere to her and her party cost.
  4. How does an independent Scotland intend to deal with defense, will we have to make an annual payment to what's left of the UK and carry on the same,if not what happens to all the military establishments throughout Scotland including Saxa Vord. Cannot believe that we would not have some form of military security, but it certainly would not be as robust as it is just now as a National entity. Would we charge "England" to rent Saxa Vord and all other sensitive sites, or just kick them out. Will we have our own fishery protection vessel. See nothing but problems looming ahead.
  5. I wouldn't put my trust in the polls, did they not predict a Labour win at the last GE and the Tories won with a big majority. The silent majority out there, who knows which way they will vote, but neither Brexit or Covid will influence me at an independence ballot box, there is many, many other issues to consider.
  6. Probably a foretaste of whats to come when we have to export/import across the English/Scottish border.
  7. Most of the restaurants and hospitality sector are closed or restricted just now, here in the UK and throughout Europe so who is buying our fish and meat .
  8. Nichola Sturgeon would be well advised to take a good look at Jo Swinson's election results and why they turned out the way they did. It's very wrong to assume everyone is thinking the same way as you,as was proved when Jo lost her seat and leadership.
  9. The roofs inside were sprayed with some kind of "screed" to provide a fire barrier ,this could be a health hazard and add some complexity and cost to the demolition. Yeah! the steel will certainly have a scrap value, almost sure there must be more that could be saved from land fill, but would guess that is the way most of will go.
  10. No definitely not me ,but if my memory serves me correctly much of this was of "sectional"building made up of prefabricated sections all bolted together,so ma'be they could be dismantled carefully and reused . This would give them a secondhand value and could provide some good outhouses,"waste not want not". Guess it will be more economical to put in the "caterpillars", If they put it on Shetlink for charity we could all go and take a bit. !!!
  11. I agree Muckle Oxters, but surely it would be best practice to let those wishing to do the demolition quote prices and then the council declare how much they are prepared to pay,or accept the offer. Surely its prudent to keep how much you are prepared to spend a secret until all the quotes are in. This after all is public money and should be spent wisely.
  12. When I refer to " the council" i'm referring to the appropriate department that is making this decision , not the council as a whole, but of course as in most of this HYS topics always one who has to make an issue. But surely it would be the contractors who are interested in the demolition who would set the price . Is it correct to tell the contractors how much you are prepared to pay, before getting in the contractors estimates. Just a thought as usual I will be wrong.
  13. So then let those who made the mistake admit it and explain why ,nothing wrong with admitting you have made an error but there is a lot of money in this one, and IMHO requires some explanation.
  14. Yeah! but whit will we do whan da wind runs oot.
  15. I'm annoyed that our council has underestimated the demolition of the old AHS by some 260%. Is our council offices full of "Abbots" I'm sure you all know the one I mean. How could those calculations be so wrong, makes me wonder about the rents and community tax, are they correct !!. I think we the public are entitled to a full explanation, after all this is public money.
  16. We should not assume everyone is against those wind turbines. https://www.infigenenergy.com/knowledge-centre/blog/tourists-are-big-fans-of-wind-energy/
  17. The arguments for and against this project will go on for years ,but looking ahead all those new roads may well give access to new sites for housing and crofts in the future,it will also open up areas for coaches full of tourists assuming of course they are left open for public access. Its not all negatives there are positives as well . Roads up Scousburgh Hill,Collafirth Hill ,Saxavord, Shurton Hill, Bressay ect all came about with the need for radio transmission.
  18. With mobile phone technology improving G4/G5 ect, how many people are going to pay for both land line and mobile phone contracts at the same time, yes I know there is contracts that do that.. I can see the conventional phone line become a thing of the past fairly soon whether it be fibre or copper with the mobile phone being the preferred option for many. It's down to cost ,how much are we prepared to pay,or able to pay. In view of that why would any company want to spend money on something that is becoming obsolescent. Why run fibre to houses then find it unused as folk use mobile phones instead. Just my opinion.
  19. Just more BULL**IT to create more division in our already broken society.More sense if they would all work together, rather than against one another.
  20. I never hear anyone bragging about the efficiency of those Solar Panels in Shetland,so I'm inclined to think they are not as productive as wind turbines. Solar panels must also require a fair amount of maintenance in this wet, windy ,salty climate I would have thought making them expensive to keep operational. Ma'be some one will show some facts and figures to prove me wrong.
  21. Brae Coop would appear to be doing OK, so see no reason why they would not want to branch out further. Just a rumour perhaps. Problem I have with Tesco is the way they "freeze" the fruit and veg.as it is transported to Lerwick. You know this is happening when it is sweating on the shelves as it comes out of the containers. Fruit and Veg should be chilled but not frozen, consequentially as a result they do not keep .
  22. Kinda looks like Trump will no be "Biden" in da white Hoose Muckle langer.
  23. This is a "Brexit" situation for America, with no clear leader . The next 4 years will be, interesting.
  24. Every trick in the book is being tried to stop Trump being re-elected, but remember it was the same last time round and he got in .
