@marksandspencer #badcustomerservice to screw #Shetland resident by taking order & money & then refusing delivery to #northernisles #shoddy

(On bed rest! Can't you tell? Bored!)

Well done Frances.  Not blaming M & S or any company for not offering a delivery service for larger items to Shetland but they should have a system to say so when a customer tries to place an order.  In fact I tried checking on their website and found this ""All the products on our website can be delivered to a UK address, except for Food to Order which you can collect in store from a participating UK store of your choice."" and I could not find an exception for furniture to remote areas.

  2. Opticians, yes, banks, if you need to visit in person, yes. You want to rummage in charity or collectible shops, then yes too. But let's face it how often do most folk need/want to do that, once, twice a few times per year for the greatest part of who need/want at all, and for a large number more, never.

Chemists........two last time I looked.  Harrys!.  Post Office.  All reasons to visit the street if the Fort chippy was not reason enough.

  3. No not really saying Robbie McGregor should be the political leader of the council but questioning why they need one.  After all the elected councillors probably represent just about all political parties.

As for the "no contest" result that is something that will happen in multi seat council elections and is maybe an unintentional side effect of the PR system.  Of course the same could happen with single seat Parliamentary constituencies and possibly has happened in the past where, by convention, at least the main parties do not stand against The Speaker.

As for a mandate I suppose supporters of the scheme might well say that since no one stood against him in Shetland South (not even a paper Tory) his mandate exists by default.

  4.

As for Brexit, the UK as a whole voted "leave".  It would be a brave (or stupid) politician that tries to ignore that.  Theresa May campaigned against it and now she has to oversee the negotiations.  God help us....

The people of the UK were lied to about Brexit releasing funds for the and the possible side effects of leaving such as prices rising in the shops.......even beer going up.........was not properly explained to the voters.  I think there are good grounds for a second referendum with the voters being told the truth.

  5.

will they let out the hostels in the holidays to make money?

Now that is an excellent idea.  They do that at some of the boarding schools and universities south for summer school.

Not only for Summer School..........some universities rent out rooms to tourists and travellers (of any age) at really good prices.  I am thinking of staying in a LSE hall of residence in London (central London at that) for about £35 a night including breakfast.  If it works for them then why not for the AHS?.

  6. A lot of people travelling south for investigation or treatment are too sick to go on the ferry and this should not be forced on them.  But equally patients who prefer the ferry should be allowed to use it.  What will NHS Shetland say when someone dies from lack of a diagnosis/treatment because they would not go on the ferry?.  Yes cutting costs where possible is good but is this really possible?.

  7. Goodness, the last bus from Hillswick to Brae at night has just left from the Post Office. The timetable states that it will leave at 18.22 from the Post Office but, as always, it has left at 18.46. That's timekeeping for you.

So maybe the roads were bad as the bus headed north from Lerwick.  Better to have a bus running late than a bus crashed.  What time does it usually leave Hillswick?.

If the Brexit vote had swung marginally in favour of remaining in Europe - would you have posted the same as you have above?

    Thought not.....

There's no mileage whatsoever in criticising the rights or wrongs of a US or UK voting system, because everyone who takes part in it lives or dies by the same rules.

Probably yes if I thought lots of lies had influenced people to vote remain.

  9. We only seem to be a proper(?) democracy for one day every four or five years otherwise, I suspect that George is pretty much right.

The underlying issue is that large portions of the global population no longer seem able to accept a resolution decided on by the majority of their local population.

But Colin, as I understand it Trump lost the "popular vote" as more Americans voted for Clinton than him but the strange system they have there allowed him to win.  Here in the UK more people did not vote to leave the EU than voted to leave it if you count the Remain vote with those who did not vote.  And of course there were several important "distortions of the truth" that may have influenced those who voted to leave.  The big lie about the money that could go to the NHS if we left being the most obvious but also the opinion polls saying we would have a majority for remain may have led to some lazy voters not bothering to vote.

  10. There is a bus stop with shelter on sea road.  Town service uses it.  Interesting to see that google maps show a bus stop in the middle of the Tesco car park for some of the shopper services.  But sad to say that although it is handy to have the bus stopping at the door there is a real risk to people using the pedestrian crossing when the bus is there.  Incidentally not only the North Isles service but the Bressay shopper and I think a south mainland shopper also stop there.

  11. I know a Spanish rescue dog.  Great little (or not so little) fellow and I am assured that he really needed someone from the UK to adopt him as the chances of a new home in Spain were close to zero.  It was my sister who adopted him and she already has two rescued greyhounds so she has certainly done her bit for UK dogs.  Yes of course the Spanish people ought to "rescue" their own dogs but if that is not happening is it so wrong for her to give her new dog a home?.

  12. The Lerwick Port Authority yard at the back of the Co-op small car park might be good if it is not being used for much at the moment.  Or indeed the LPA might have somewhere else.  Anderson High School top car park could work outside term time.  Just some passing thoughts.

  13. I am of the opinion that the UK government will get the EU to make a new offer and there will then be another in/out/shake it all about referendum so basically we are not out yet!.  But just for fun if we do leave will the final communication from the EU say "goodbye and thanks for all the fish"?.

  14. If you have a return ticket and the southbound flight is cancelled you ought to get a refund for the complete flight both ways.  That said Flybe/Loganair/BA are unlikely to refund hotel costs so travel insurance could help with that but certainly worth checking you are covered before buying said insurance.
