  1. Shetland weddings are amongst the best in the world and as far as the UK is concerned THE BEST.. Thumbs up to MJ. The way Shetlanders get stuck in to the Hennie/Stag nights are to be proud of. I can drive through the toon on a Saturday afternoon and if i see a group of guys dressed as Disney characters and lasses dressed as St Trinians pupils, i just wish i had an invite to the wedding.
  2. The kindest thing you can do to either living creature in the above statement is.... release it from your grip .....dork, get a life. Kindest is not in the equation...need and greed maybe.
  3. http://img112.imageshack.us/img112/8748/lh2ix7.jpg It's still driving me crazy, i keep arriving at triple parked roundabout entry points with folk looking at each other with an "After you Claud" or "I ain't got a clue who has the right of way" expression ..they both look the same.
  4. Last post is well off theme, sorry but guys never believe all you are told.....even from a FISH.
  5. Don't think for one moment you are able to make sure the hens/eggs you purchase are free range, they may say they are .....but are you sure? "Freedom Food - leading the way in farm animal welfare"....(dads dangly bits) The way it works is some group of bright sparks create an assurance scheme and convince suppliers and retailers to enlist (suppliers invest cash to be included) and then the scheme plays on the public with soul searching sad stories of beasts outside there scheme but and this is a big but how often do they recheck the accredited supplier....Daily, no...Weekly, no...Monthly, no...i'll tell you once a year to tick a few boxes and collect the next investment into the scheme. You can sing a lullaby to the wee lamb before you cut it's throat while the inspectors are there but you know the inspectors won't be back again for another twelve months, business as usual.
  6. I think the guy is guilty....and my thoughts are not motivated by my raised left trouser leg.
  7. How many staff are employed? HERE WE GO AGAIN....jeez when will it stop? (mod edit - title changed)
  8. Promise? No offence intended but pray tell how you know for sure. There's many a time I've seen offers that "apply only to mainland UK". You an employee? I agree this thread is about the arrival/fear of arrival of one of the biggest national/international super stores listed in the UK... do i work for Tesco ?...who can say, but what i can say is i love these wee Isles and the people that live and work in them, they have also been taken advantage of (ripped off) for years ...TESCO in Shetland will break the mould....Spend £50 in our store and receive 10% discount at our petrol pumps...do you think the SIC will have the power to stop TESCO from offering the local population discounted petrol at a TESCO petrol station attached to their store in Lerwick... not a chance lol...if TESCO wish it, it will be done. (oh....SIC please speak to our Legal Department....they will advice you if it's worth investing in a "FEASIBILITY STUDY" to stop Tesco's advance... there's a thought who gets the returns from all of Shetlands "FEASIBILITY STUDIES"...the Isles have spent millions over the years to find answers i could have given them at midnight in the Thule Bar on a Friday. TRUE SAL
  9. Infiltrator that is the best post i've read on Shetlink for a long time 10/10, my smile got broader and broader as i read through your post, thanks a lot. Sal
  10. Tesco is to stop sourcing products from Zimbabwe as the political crisis there escalates. Tesco said it had taken the "difficult decision" to cut trade "until there is an end to the current political crisis". The retailer said it could not ignore the escalating crisis and the growing consensus among the international community that further action was needed to increase pressure for change. It said in a statement: "The amount of produce Tesco sources from Zimbabwe - worth around £1 million per year - is insignificant in terms of global trade and influence. Former Labour Cabinet minister Peter Hain, who has called on supermarkets to end their trade with Zimbabwe, said: "This is a very welcome decision by Tesco. I hope it will give a lead to other British and global companies to freeze or suspend ties with Zimbabwe under Mugabe's tyranny."
  11. OFF Topic......Ghostrider is your avatar a GT 750 Suzuki?... This, I shall believe, when it is actually happening. Why would they, when all they need to do is keep them a few pence per tin lower than any of their competition. If the local competition is a national company the rules follow a group pricing structure, the only allowance of change is due to local trading pressure eg. McNabs Kippers Salmon products at below market price...is it a threat ?..if not lose lead.
  12. I must say i feel sorry for the wee Skeld operation, i think it had a lot going for it and has been dealt a raw deal all round. I'm sure there are positions for all Shetland Smoke House employees at the new "Value Added" factory in Lerwick of "Lerwick Fish Traders" .
  13. "Has Tesco ever come out and said what their pricing policy is going to be? The last I heard was that they were considering adding on extra to cover the freight costs, but was that even confirmed?" If i hear that word Freight again as a poor reason for high prices in Shetland i think i will curl up and cry.......... Do you think a supermarket charges more at it's branches that are further away from it's main distribution depot .....get a grip man... TESCO beans will be the same price in Shetland as in Birmingham....DOH.. We will be offered the same national advertised promotions as the rest of the UK.....promise. .
  14. breeksy all of the events you mention go without saying as major breaks for Shetland but believe me the arrival of TESCO will open the door to a new and fairer life style for so many folk...... if in the future TESCO apply to build a discount petrol station for it's customers (as all TESCO stores have on the mainland) do you think the SIC will have the power to say "NO".....think again TESCO'S lawyers are more than a match for the SIC cartel ....LOL...... good things around the corner guys.
  15. "The formula for business success is complex, but it rarely lies in low volumes, poor selection, high prices (through high margins), abysmal service, indifferent employees and varied quality. Try changing the parts of this equation as applicable to your business and you might see business grow in the face of challenge". N1 north.....but i think you are batting over their heads, the coop will always be an also ran. I hope TESCO throw a big party on their opening day as it will be the best thing that has happened to Shetland for a long time. I really enjoy the way things have developed.... fact #1.. " If TESCO applied to the SIC for planning permission to build a Store in Shetland...IT WOULD BE DENIED fact #2.. " The SIC could not tell Somerfield they could not sell their store in Lerwick to TESCO....ha, ha TESCO have arrived through the back door...WHO WILL BENEFIT?....the GENERAL POPULATION of SHETLAND
  16. I am surprised the Buckie Crew were here for so long. it was a sure thing they only got involved (encouraged by SIC cash) to get hands on the Smoke House customer base... I think i hear that distant chant to all SIC members...." THANK YOU AND GOODBYE" Jeez when will we ever learn...? .
  17. If you are old enough to "Soulder Arms" for this country you are old enough to do anything that's legal within this countries borders. I rest my case
  18. Any Shetland folk that have shopped on the mainland will have to admit our Lerwick CooP is badly run, it all boils down to the Area Manager, if he can't see the problems and correct them or point them out... the local Branch Manager thinks he is on a soft ride = bad service. end of case.
  19. I thought it was the sheep to blame for no trees in Shetland.....now i realize we are part of a government trial on road safety......... oh those conspiracy theories ....LOL.
  20. Oh the good auld days, Shetland Catch was a great place to work, if you go back a decade and a bit....... One of the best " Man Managers " i ever worked for ....... Jim Ridland..... made them an employer you were happy to work for, we were not paid a lot but if we were offered overtime we gladly did it, it was a lot of fun and the staff were loyal......now it may be a bit different. Lerwick Fish Traders will never aspire to the same level of Staff/Management mutual respect as auld Shetland Catch... I have heard of shop floor staff with 7 years and more experience with LFT after handing in their notice to leave...response being from the company...."Sorry to see you go"... i kid you not, such a short sighted respect for the companies backbone workforce i have never seen before in any other employer. "We can run with Northern European Employees on minimal wages" , jerks that's all i can say....wait and see, within six months of the new factory opening the MD will leave the company and the machine will grind to a halt.
  21. How about an approach to SKY TV to promote a UK National Trout Fly Tournament in Shetland, a two day televised event with big cash prizes. We do have the best trout fisheries in the UK. thoughts..
  22. Scalloway would make an ideal venue, in future years, for a national or international Jet Ski Championship round during the week after the Johnsmas Foy and Flavour of Shetland....thoughts.
  23. Lass, that post came from the heart and made a lot of sense.....nice one
  24. The arrival of Tesco in Shetland is the best thing that can happen for the isles population....we have all been ripped off for years with the "It's due to the frieght" claim for high prices or it's more expensive because "I want a big Merc. as well to drive round and around the town" from beer to TV's and every thing in between we have paid over the odds. Fair trading should start at home. Price of petrol/beer in Shetland has tried to be justified " Daddy Cow Poo " we are not stupid, the price of a pint is more in Lerwick than it is in the heart of Edinburgh......oh of course FRIEGHT....(ask the breweries if the isles pubs pay more per barrel than Aberdeen pubs). Da Da
