  1. Hey esseff yeh I was same as you initially but the long haul in Shetland is a different story. Once you have been to your 50th hall dance, all same folk in same seats, drank in the lounge same folk in same seats and been to yet another play wi same folk in the same roles, etc it all get too samey. I suppose if you were a birder or geologist would be different.I was keen cyclist before went to Shetland by gave up due to wind, rain and too many fast mental drivers! I know Shetland probably is a lot friendlier Than many parts of england or Wales, but compared o rest o Scotland I don't think it is. Nice scenery though
  2. Cammara could not agree more. In the 12 years in Shetland I saw so many people come up and leave as it was nothing like they imagined. Klanky you clearly ignored the positives I posted about Shetland i think i said it is the most beautiful place in terms of scenery, and I never used the word backward, unlike a lot of incomers I did make friends with likeminded shetlanders, I just found there was a dourness about folk generally, very little interest in others, introverted. I am a people person and found Shetland wasn't. My Shetland pals told me the real stuff that went on behind he soothmoothers backs, many incomers are too naive to see it. Oh and the isles do attract a strange type of people, often people who due to their issues, lifestyle, beliefs or personality would not do well in a more dynamic populated part of the uk. Often folk running away from problems etc no bad thing and the money and services you get up in Shetland for having a disability etc are second to none. Good thing about Shetland is you can get a job with limited skills , one you would never even get short listed for anywhere else. In my time there the sic was being run by people with very limited experience. Maybe it's changed now?
  3. The 12 yeas I lived in Shetland were not all bad. A walk on st ninians isle helped cope with the boredom. I would not say drugs was issue it's drink, even when I lived in highlands was tame in comparison. Only peterheed could compete ! I think most folk comparing Shetland to living in England clearly lived in unfriendly places, scotland is uber friendly , all the places I lived in Scotland were friendly , shetland was most introverted community.
  4. The attempted sodomy incident on a male teen was not of course something I witnessed but it was reported in media , briefly of course. It certainly took bullying to a new low I did not say I had a bad time I said once I left I realised most incomers spend their time up there convincing themselves it's great, as the move back is horrendously costly I have good few Shetland mates who agree with me btw
  5. the attempted sodomy with a pole was part of a bullying incident on a boy in the Anderson high hostel , yes it was swept under the carpet as most things are in Shetland. I saw folk happily buy guys convicted of domestic violence a pint and what goes on behind closed doors is unbelievable. I do not agree folk will go out of their way to incomers. I have several Shetland friends and they admit they tolerate incomers at best. Incomers are often niave and others patronising to local folk. Lots of incomers are unaware of the back stabbing as they only mix with other incomers, I was shocked to discover many incomers who had been there over 10 years had not been inside a Shetland house. You have to talk, invite yourself into things or they will ignore you. The level of alcoholism is not normal , again it's hidden. Where I lived 2 out of 4 closest neighbours were alcoholics. The young people are bought drink at hall dances as young as 13 by so called caring adults and the young teenage girls leered at. I am concerned that people are naive when it comes to the move. Once you are there it's full of people trying to justify how great it is, mainly as a move south, with higher house prices and greater demands on you was daunting. Three of my close friends also moved back eventually and it's not until you do does the penny drop. Shetland is a great place if you like your own company, like staying in and have an introverted personality. Not knocking it just trying to dispel the myth of this great Shetland welcome
  6. I did not say worst place in world, it suits introverted people give you that. I have not lived anywhere other than Scotland and Shetland is least friendly place I have experienced living. (lived since childhood Arran, Borders,Perthshire , Dundee , highlands and now Edinburgh ) Landscape wise it I the best right enough and it's easy to get a job, infact they employ anybody ESP in the cooncil lol
  7. Big lad if you read my post I was talking about young people in general and those I have worked with, not in Shetland specifically and I do believe MOST kids get a bad press and need support. Maybe more support would reduce bullying in Shetland schools? My children had a better experience in mainland schools
  8. Can only speak from my experience. Many years ago we lived in Shetland for 12 years. I met many people who came with a dream and left so please be cautious.NegativesVery introverted and inward looking. Do not expect the same friendly warm, chatty responses that you get in the rest of scotland. you willget a curt "aye aye" My shetland colleagues soon taught me shetlanders in the main do not regard themselves as scottish.Having lived in various locations within the uk Shetland was least friendly. Nobody asks you anything, relationships are superficial, incomers are always incomers even a someone we knew who lived on Shetland for 40 years still regarded by true shetlanders as incomer!Bigotry and racism, never heard so much, my kids were all bullied in school and they had come from a rough inner city school. In the country schools it is not idyllic it's full oh Shetland bairns who are all related and exclude others. There was a horrific sodomy bullying attack on a child in the anderson high. Drink, even when we lived in the highlands we have never seen drink on this scale. Want to see young men so drunk they have wet themselves or dribbled puke down themselves this is the place, even if it is 11 am on regatta day! Boredom. There is a limit on where you can go, you cannot get off the isle without spending a small fortune. Weather, winter darkness, makes it very difficult to do much outside. Big fish in small pond syndrome is rife.nepotism and lack of skills mean. Untalented arses are running the place. Now the positives Unspoilt scenery Uncommercial Good fresh fish shop Moving back to mainland Scotland was best thing I did. It's not until you move back do you realise how many compromises you made living in such a place. Mental health problems, very high numbers , again drink related.
  9. I agree with you they get a bad press. Sick to death of the " it wasn't like that in my day" no it wasn't as the vast majority of teens today are more socially skilled, articulate and aware than in our day. Teasing people with disabilities is wrong, worse still the active discrimination which is carried out out by older people on a daily basis. Look at the sic figures for the number of disabled people they employ! That's what folk should be complaining about.
  10. Wow what an overgeneralisation about kids today, what is this statement based on? I have worked with teenagers for over 20yrs and this stereotype of the current generation is false. Young folk will respect you if they r treated with respect. Look at adult behaviour first before slating an entire generation. As for your comment regarding your own kids says more about you than you probably realise
  11. Dull drab stuck in time warp, other than peerie shop. That I accept given remote location BUT it's the selling cheap crap for inflated prices that bugs me. Years ago I bought something from Home Bargains twas not any kind if bargain, paid 8quid ,then discovered under the price tag a mainlaind chain store price sticker for 1.99 Rip off
  12. Okay, I'll NEVER post on Shetlink AGAIN! Happy now Mod? I wasn't TELLING folk their happiness/appreciation wasn't deserved or justified! Pick your battles? Pardon me for breathing but I was under the (false) impression that Shetlink was where people were permitted to debate matters; I wasn't aware that Moderators were now dictating which "battles" were 'up for debate'. It is obviously a CRIME to have an opinion! This is a bit o an immature "toys out the pram " response, for someone who claims to want mature debate. Mind u there really wasn't anything to debate, someone expressing thanks to low paid posties . Why don't u post something worthy o debate

    Papa Stour

Sorry you must be joking unless u want a child educated in such a detached and removed from reality, narrow world view way! No Adon I want the children educated to a standard where they wont use "u" instead of "you" in posts or letters Ah i see academic snobbery behind your choice of educational goals for ur kids. They may or may not come out with excellent grammar but will hardly be a well rounded education. I myself am educated to PHD level butnhave turd grammar and spelling. I am amazed at the number of young people I meet with a suitcase of qualifications, perverted grammar YET zero social skills. Education is as much about learning to cope I society as is it about the way you write or speak
  14. LeeVoe you really need to get out more , your post really worried me!
  15. Like i said big fish tiny pond, over personalised politics.....shudder
