crofter
"A'll lay dee on an aamos..." It is just a promise that if something happens then you will give the other person something, or do something for them.
smaadrink
My mother made a small fortune, by 'Laying an aamos', on the haddock lines she baited.
valhalla
Thanks for your replies. Can you lay an aamos on anybody? e.g. do I hae to ken dem? What is the "something" that I do or give them? Am I right in mindin that you NEVER tell the person that you've laid an aamos on dem? If you lay an aamos are you meant to keep it a secret? Is it a good or bad thing to do? As your probably already guessed there is something that I wid really lik to get and want/need to ken dat I'm doing it right! Cheers! crofter
^ Dat's in da sense dat if some een is 'poor aamos', dey wir nae use in layin a aamos apo' dem. Dunna ken if hit wis aye dat it hed ta be somebody in good health. I think it is because both words are derived from "alms" - if you had a good fishing you would give alms money to the kirk, if you depended on charity you were a "poor aamos ting"
