The management of Gun, one of Scotlands best known rock bands, have been in touch with us with an interest in bringing the band to Shetland.

Gun were quite big in the late 80's and early 90's with their first 3 albums, Taking on The World, Gallus and Swagger mainstays in the albums chart.

The Glasgow-based band are probably best known for their version of Cameo's Word Up!, which was a hit single for Gun in 1994. The link to the video is here:

Gun split up in 1997 but reformed last year with Toby Jepson of Little Angels on vocals (replacing original singer Mark Rankin).

The band have expressed an interest in coming up next year, is there any interest amongst Shetlinkers to see the band in Shetland?

GUN - BURRA HALL - 5th MARCH - PRESS RELEASE

Rock fans in Shetland are in for a treat in March when one of Scotland's best loved rock bands head north to start their UK tour in the isles.

Gun will play the Burra Public Hall on Friday 5th March as the first show of their Popkiller 2010 tour.

The Glasgow-based band formed in 1987 and 2 years later signed to A&M Records. Gun enjoyed instant success with their debut single, Better Days, entering the UK chart at number 33 while the subsequent album, Taking On The World, also charted in the top 40.

In 1990 Gun toured the US for the first time and picked up quite a number of fans along the way, not least Mick Jagger, who personally invited the group to join the European leg of the Rolling Stones Urban Jungle tour, which included a gig at Hampden Park in the bands native home city of Glasgow.

The early 90's brought continued success for Gun with the release of 2 more albums, 1992's Gallus and Swagger which made the UK top 5 on it's release in 1994.

The band also had 8 top 40 singles, most notably Word Up! which charted at number 8 and remains Gun's most famous release.

After 10 years together Gun called it a day in 1997 and the band members went their seperate ways. Bassist Dante Gizzi reappeared in 2005 as the frontman in glam rockers El Presidente.

Gun's story picks up again in 2008 when the founding members decided to reform the band along with new vocalist Toby Jepson, the ex-frontman in Little Angels, for a charity gig in Glasgow.

The show proved to be a great success and Gun decided to reform permanently with Jepson replacing original singer Mark Rankine.

A full UK tour ensued taking in venues such as the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London and the Carling Academy in Glasgow. There was also a main stage appearance at T In The Park.

2009 saw the band enter the studio together for the first time in over a decade, the results were released as the mini-album Popkiller, a recording which proved Gun had not lost the ability to craft hook-laden anthems.

This year will see Gun tour their new material alongside their impressive back catalogue and it all kicks off at the Burra Hall on Friday 5th March.

Promoters A Northern Soul, who are staging the event, said they were delighted to be bringing a band of Gun's stature to Shetland and promised that everyone attending the event were in for a great night.

Support for the night comes from veterans of the Shetland rock scene, Rip Torn, who themselves used to cover Gun songs when they started out!

Tickets are on sale now, priced £17.50, in person from the Shetland Box Office at Islesburgh Community Centre or by calling 01595 745555.

Doors at the Burra Hall open at 7.30pm and the event is open to over 18's only.

The Gun date at the Burra Hall has had to be postponed from Friday 5th March until Saturday 3rd April.

Unfortunately the NorthLink refit schedule meant that the band would be stuck up here for 3 days because of the Hjaltland covering for the Hamnavoe on the Pentland Firth route.

Gun are also playing an arena tour with Lynyrd Skynrd around the same time, so our only option is to postpone this highly anticipated show for a month.

Original tickets are still valid for the new date, but if you are unable to attend, then refunds are available from the Shetland Box Office at Islesburgh.

A Northern Soul apologise for any inconvenience caused by the switch of date.

In the meantime Guns N' Roses tribute band, Guns for Hire, have switched dates from April to March so we can accommodate Gun.

Guns For Hire will play in Shetland on Friday 5th March and Saturday 6th March. Full details will be posted soon!!
