Stoichkov
Why shud it though? This is shetland, there ain't no big money transfers. Why should a team lik thistle fold when there's a lot o lerwick players playing for other teams when they should be turning up 4 da toon? I tell you, the only teams left in a years time will be burra and whitedale.
Pooks
I agree. I don't think it should be so widespread in professional football either.
ladyfootballer
It's freedom of choice. You can't make Lerwick folk just work for Lerwick businesses - same applies to sport . It is a problem but to devolop a sport it has to have competition too. Good players want to play against good players and alongside other good players. Whitedale and Burra both have regular good quality training and make a big effort for their players. There was a time when the men's teams such as Celtic were regularly hammered as well. It all pans out in the end. Players want to play where their friends are etc and you can't really prohibit that without making things very complicated. Eg does folk with Westside, Burra or Whalsay connections living in Lerwick have to play for the town or vice versa. It doesn't apply in the men's league and it would be questionable just to impose this on the women's league.Thistle should get organised - they have the largest catchement area after all. I'm sure if lasses felt they could develop playing for a Lerwick team then several would join. There's also lots of lasses not playing football that could also be attracted and could become good players. All the lasses playing county now only started playing a year or two ago! As often in Shetland it's down to those behind the scenes willing to coach, organise, motivate etc. The reason there's no team from Lerwick is down to this more than anything. If a Lerwick team could get their act together then am sure some folk playing for other teams would go and play for them. As I've said the infrastructure has to be in place though. Anybody on here wants to take on a Lerwick team they will get every support from the women's association. AGM will be shortly. We want more teams and are open to suggestions. We have debated Parish type rules for playing for a team but as Burra, Whitedale , Delting and Whalsay are now established teams it is diffucult to do. (Delting won the recent sevens tournament and Whitedale got stuffed 5-1 by Unst) Last point is that Unst have come on this season and are a very good side . They are hoping to join league next year and with a few more games will challenge Whitedale/Burra. This proves that with a good structure it can be done. Shoogler
Good luck to the womens football teams against Orkney this weekend. There is no reason whatsoever why womens football can't be sustainable in Shetland and just because the better players are tending toards a few teams doesn't nean another team or area can't aspire to something better - all it takes is a bit of commitment from a few individuals to organise things. Having practice matches against mens/boys teams is a good way to assess progress. Go for it!

ladyfootballer
Shetland lost 4-2 to Clyde FC at broad wood (well park across the road actually) in the Scottish cup first round last weekend. Here is the report taken from Scottish women's football site. TEN GAMES PLAYED IN UNITE CUP -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The match itself was a well competed fixture with Clyde FC taking a 3-0 advantage at half time with goals from Kate McCormick, Natalie McCormick and an own goal from a Clyde FC corner. In the second half Shetland changed formation to a 4-3-3 and got right back into the tie with 2 goals from Josie Jamison, drawing the match back to 3-2.After a couple of further chances for Shetland where there were several excellent saves from the Clyde goalkeeper Rebecca Currie, Shetland were unlucky in striking the post. Clyde put the tie beyond doubt with a goal from debutant Siobhan McInally, who finished clinically from a through ball.Clyde FC expressed their thanks to all at Shetland LFC for making the long trip to play the fixture. Eight ties will be played this coming Sunday, including the prelim round between Dunfermline and Hutchison Vale, and the SWF Disciplinary Committee will meet to discuss the four withdrawals
