  1. the increase in speed, what is your understanding of acceleration?
  2. having been on boats on a fine day in Hawaii I can assure you that the sea state there is a hell of a lot coorser than it is here but they still manage to run a cat service, seeing how you say it can't be done then they must use some kind of magical cat. otherwise it just wouldn't work now would it.
  3. as it is already travelling at speed the acceleration would be minimal
  4. yes, It was cornfirmed by a senior manager at the bank of scotland several years ago and when I spoke to him today, he said although he had no figures to hand it is the same now as then.
  5. Surely the only two points on the trip where acceleration would be experienced would be on leaving harbour.
  6. We maybe don't have a large population, but it is a proven fact that more Autonomy will reverse the decline, We already pay more in income tax than we recieve in "subsidy" from the UK, if we were to get the same cut from our oil as the the UK currently takes then we are looking at an income of £billions, the interest alone on one years income would keep Shetland far better than any "subsidies" recieved from th UK. Fact we subsidise the UK not the other way around as they would have you believe.
  7. They use sea cats in Hawaii and the wave hight there is often over 4 meters, must be made of sterner stuff over there.
  8. Write your MP your MSP's whatever but it has to be said Napier has lost the plot, when it comes to protecting our kids, mick the greek walks free and scollay gets to work with kids. Just what the heck is going on in that mans head?
  9. Come on now Auld man a couple o dozen folk repeatedly stating their opposition is hardly a singular polarization of the 1700 or so Shetlinkers.
  10. Having spent the first 50 odd years of his life living and working in the UK he is entitled to draw a UK pension no matter where he lives in the world
  11. But a few seconds production from the oil around here would and a lot more besides. 10% of the fishing effort in shetland waters is by UK boats and we have a very small part of that, with control of our own waters we could live quite comfortably. And just like every other small country in the world we could offer very favourable tax laws to individuales and companies, raking in quite a bit more ready currency. With more control of our destiny a lot more of our young folk would choose to stay as there would be rewarding careers available localy more chance for them to achieve their potential. The vast resources of oil and gas we have around our shores would pay for any transition and allow us to invest in our own future on our own terms. The Isle of Man, Guernsey, Jersey etc manage rather well without our resources, so the arguments against us returning to our indipendance just don't hold water For the life of me I can't understand you or anyone else with Shetlands best interest at heart objecting
  12. no it means twa tirrikis is here
  13. Thats quite an assumption, that we would have none of these services had the UK not had control over us, then again all the above mentioned servives are provided to a much higher standard in Norway. . So the question is what have we been denied?
  14. there ix enough tonnage of paper used in shetland to make recycling commercially viable but I for one would fight tooth and nail to stop any venture of this type taking place in Shetland. the chemicals used in the process are hardly enviromently friendly
  15. The UAE is not Saudi Arabia, it is a collection of emirates(kingdoms) including that tourist Mecca Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharshia etc. but definately not Saudi Arabia
  16. http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/please-go/ and heres the petition over 20,000 now
  17. with the recent conviction in Iran of a journalist, I must say i found it quite ammusing that president wharsmedinnerjacket came out with the statement that he had instructed the judicial system to ensure the poor woman was granted all rights and to ensure fairness in the trial. Surely in a free and fair society he should not need to do this, and would it not of been better coming out with it before her trial and not after her conviction. Surely this is proof that even the president of the country conceeds trials are not fair. One more point in Israel if an 8 year old is caught stealing a loaf of bread the worst he could expect is a skelpt bum in Iran driving a pickup over his arm was the way they found to get around the Koran saying they should not chop the hands of children
  18. they will do a lot less damage to the environment than the current proposal of 150 windmills. we have heard a lot [mod]Be more eloquent in your posts[/mod] on here about being at the forefront of renewable energy with the wind farm, so why not truly get to the front of renewables with this technology. so what if environmental impact studies etc take a year, another year is not going to make or break the planet. because the power supplied by these devices is more constant than the windmills they could be tied directly into the Shetland grid and start providing bennefits directly to those of us paying for them. Then lets look at the break down of how proffits wil be shared out with the VE project, 50% to the power company for its 50% financial investment but what about the investment of our land we are getting 45% back on our 45%financial investment but sweet FA for our landscape, Oh yes Brian Anderson et al will get payments for the use of "their land" but is it not our land scape? what are we getting for that? Quite frankly the whole thing stinks almost as much as the lochs and burns will stink when they are clogged up with the peat that will surely end up contaminating them.
  19. For those of you (AT) that claim tidal and wave energy is years away from being commercially viable please take the time to watch National Geographics program Megastructures, Electric Oceans. I haven't seen the program myself but it shows various machines operating and producing electricity now at various locations around the world, Orkney included.
  20. I would have to agree that the Shalders buses site would be a better prospect, just me . but there may be a problem with oil contamination on this site.
  21. It was a rural environment complete with industrial site and fish factories before some muppet decided to build houses there. then you really should know better then, wheesht we de boy an whet de pleepsin An move ta lerick never mentioned sooth
