Haven't bought one for years so definitely not a necessity. And as folks on higher incomes tend to buy more luxury goods, then they are paying more VAT. the biggest problem the country faces now is the labour party and the unions getting together to derail any progress the government try to make. I'm willing to bet a fiver that brother brian will be on a picket line somewhere near you soon.

no problem we folks coming here just them getting public funds for their pet projects. I worked for private companies who approached me to go and work for them, no public funds involved at all. When my work was done the companies I worked for were better off financially for me having been there, the same can not be said for some that are coming here. and it all could have been put to rest last year if the councillors had voted the way their constituents had told them to after several public meetings. but they didn't so we are saddled with a white elephant that will cost all of us more than we can afford for the benefit of a few. and you can tell this from your crystal ball I mean business plan can you. a business plan drawn up by folks that have never run a successful business

agreed gorgo dir is mony a damn fool been bred here, but a dis carry on ower a few selkies comes from a mind set not indigenous to Shetland. they come ashore to pup at this time of year and this is when they do the most damage to inshore fish stocks. when do you suggest they should be culled? After the pups are born they are dependent on their mothers for a long time so shooting them any time over the summer/autumn would condemn the pups to a slow death through starvation. Any later in the year and there is no enough o them around to make a cull feasible. Like you I think leaving the crangs to rot is a hellish waste. the simplest most humane option would be to follow the Canadian example and club the pups shortly after birth, then sale of skins would cover the cost. But then there is no hope of a sensible solution as long as soothmoothers with no clue about Shetlands environment make decisions on how to manage it.

7 schools to be closed to save money almost enough money saved to pay for mareel. when the decision was made by councillors/trustees to build the damn thing the financial crisis was already upon us. so yes Njugle I do think they are witless buggers. To lazy to move about paulb I don't think so I have lived in many parts of the world before choosing to return home, and not once did I try to impose my will on the locals anywhere I lived. nor did I sit there with my hand out expecting others to fund my lifestyle choices.

Hoosn my apologies if you felt my comments were directed at you they were not. from your post I can tell you are not one of those self obsessed idiots that come here and tell wis what we are doing wrong and how they will fix it. In fact going on your post you seem like a welcome addition to Shetlands dna mix, unfortunately that can not be said for many others that alight fae da boat. bresail you are the prime example of a soothmoother that gives the rest a bad name, you are entitled to your opinion but it is an opinion based on ignorance and not worth squat. a few, they reckon a tsunami went right over the top of us 7000 years ago and it was probably a fair while till any one came here after that but i would certainly reckon on a few. I know my family have been here and Orkney for at least a 1000 years if that's any help to you.

read GR post bresail. and their were plenty of different types of birds on Foula till the Bonxies were given free reign. the first record for a soothmoother maybe, 6 or 7 pairs enough to keep the sea eagle away but not enough to destroy every other thing there, seems the Foula folk knew more about conservation in 1774 than the soothmoothers do today. who's history when it is written by soothmoothers I put very little faith in the written word Skaterboy, (a Shetlander that has watched the effects o blind interference fae sooth in his lifetime screw up the balance achieved here over millennia)

I would also suggest that learning to swim in da voe might actually save a life as the bairn would be able to cope with the cold shock much better. lots of folks that could swim perfectly well in a swimming pool have drowned falling in to the sea, loch or river due to cold shock, that first initial sharp intake of breath when you hit the water is often taken while under water if you are not used with it it will kill you and heated swimming pools do damn all to prepare them for that.
