  1. Isn't this a bit Reiterish? Will any of the new crop of councillors have the guts to do anything?
  2. sudden stop said only if an emergency occurs and then they can't take off again, till the cat is raised, I believe. Can't use it is an alternate for planning purposes
  3. I see Sumburgh was down to a CAT4 operation on Tuesday morning due to firefighter sickness. This meant that only aircraft up to Saab340 size could use it! Luckily the afternoon shift was complete as there was a BAe146 sudden arrival. Rumour abounds that any staff leaving will not be replaced. This would mean than any CAT5 or above aircraft would rely on pre-planning (such as the Atlantic Airways BAe146 schedule) and willingness of firefighters to work overtime. If this is true it would be a worrying development for people using Sumburgh as a diversionary airpoprt.
-apologies to all Normenn for this poor translation
  5. On the subject of waste of money. As I read it, ILS (Instrument Landing System) so greatly desired - can have drawbacks. At Kirkwall and Inverness the introduction of ILS has apparently reduced the effective useable landing distances. it also reduced somewhat the benefit of the runway lengthening at Sumburgh. Apparently it is not possible to forecast the actual effect, until work has been completed and Then the CAA come along and calibrate it and give you your new length. While at Kirkwall the improved minimum height has been a godsend, at Sumburgh the minimum cloud height for landing has gone up 50ft. The old hands reckon it might have been better with the old talk down radar ILS is potentially disastrous on a short field opreration.
  6. Why don't the SIC spend some money at Tingwall. I am sure they could find enough money in the coffers to give Tingwall a nice long runway. It would be central for Shetland and if they had put money into Tingwall instead of Scatsta we wouldn't have to drive to Scatsta at 5 am to get our free flights, find out they'd diverted to Sumburgh and get on another bus journey. If they put all our resources into Tingwall it would the best possible solution for everybody. Herrislea could become the Tingwall International Airport Hilton and the Lerwegians could walk out saving them a fortune in bus fares. It could be called the Sandy Cluness Interntional Airport of Gott
  7. Will this money be used to make the airport (Scatsta) more reliable. e,g, will it improve the current problems due to the combination of short narrow runway and cross or light winds which seem to be the primary bugbear of our operating our aircaft in there??
  8. I am genuinely glad that the workers at Scatsta have had Sword of Damocles taken away (for the time being). They do a professional job and it is not pleasant always looking over your shoulder at the axeman. Strange that the oil companies have had to come begging for money - or is it payback time? after all they've had a poor year?? After all £8,000,000 wouldn't have done much for the underpriveleged or elderly or even the staff facing single status paycuts. Or schools facing closure. Funny this amount of money can be doled out suddenly without any public consultation

  13. suddenstop sed nah. I think its been caused by all those muckle 146 jets banging down all week
  14. Hmmm I was under the impression that after 64 you wouldn't get redundancy payments?? Anybody know? one rule for the rulers.........................!!
  15. Do community warden s actually exist? Anoyne heard anything about them lately? Where can I find one/ How much do they cost?
  16. angel wrote{HonestJohnDoe, I'm intrigued as to where you got this information from? as it certainly isn't accurate by far. } Excellent, you obviously know better, what are your figures, them?
  17. I have withdrawn my remarks/statistics. As they were from anecdotal evidence I have no way of confirming them publicly. Howver I think that it would be easily achievable should anyone be particularly interested to find out. I have no wish to cause offence or alarm and will not post further on this matter
  18. to give us some comparison I have a couple of questions for you. 1. How many days per year are Sumburgh and Scatsta each normally open for business? 2. How many Sumburgh aircraft have diverted to Scatsta in the last year? How many Scatsta aircraft have diverted to Sumburgh in the same period? those answers might give a better indication of an airports usefulness as a diversion? 1. How many passengers can a 146 carry into Scatsta and Sumburgh in still air conditions? 2. Similarly how many passengers can a Saab340 carry out of each airport in still conditions? These answers might give a good indication of an airports suitability for the type of aircraft the travelling public have to actually use. Do both airports meet the full CAA criteria for public service runway size and equipment levels, or is there any dispensation for extraordinary locations/requirements?
  19. standing stop said of Scatsta "The no-expense-spared option would be to demolish the existing terminal and hanger and put the crosswind runway back into action. The runway is still there - just need a bit of TLC and resurfacing. Probably could be done for less than 9.5million. (My estimate! )" my estimate £50-60M
  20. Yes Jeems, I have to go to Sumburgh quite a lot and even before the runway extension and there always seemed to be an IAC Bae146 on the ground. I seem to remember the Times saying 50+ local jobs were lost, (not including the itinerant pilots and engineers) ?
  21. Anyone out their going to vote for Mr T next year. prhps Shetlink could field a candidate
