Maybe that's only in cities where they occupy the sewers. Last time I listen to David Attenborough (actually he probably was referring to the city now I think about it). Brown Rat Rattus norvegicus This species was originally Introduced to Shetland from visiting vessels but its place of origin and date of introduction are unknown although Venables & Venables suggest that it may have been in about 1730.
