Pooks
Don't know if any of you have stumbled across this little gem before but it basically allows you to enter an artist (musical of course) into the search box and it then designs a personalised 'radio station' around that artist, playing similar music. Free to try and free to register although you may need to _ahem_ find a Zip code to keep using it... Well worth a look:- http://pandora.com/ Edited just to say it is a good way of discovering bands you haven't heard before and can anybody remember the full name of that American TV Series? Beverly Hills 9021...something?
Twerto
yeah I use this all the time.. saves me the thought of filing through media player picking what i want to hear.
Marvin
That's a quality website. Bryan, what do you reckon the MCPS/PRS would make of it though?
peeriebryan
What a fantastic idea/site! I'm an instant addict Bryan, what do you reckon the MCPS/PRS would make of it though? On first inspection, they seem to have their legalities in order. I would imagine that they're covered by existing streaming radio regulations Here's a link to their terms/conditions. Haven't had a proper look, but it seems to cover themhttp://www.pandora.com/legal.shtml However, they're only 'officially' legal in the USA due to streaming royalty issues. This is from their FAQ sectionSadly, we can only legally offer Pandora services to residents of the United States at this time. Audio streaming regulations differ from country to country, and we are working on acquiring the proper licenses. Here's a few articles I found whilst looking into the royalty issues http://enjoyment.independent.co.uk/music/features/article312587.ece http://www.villagevoice.com/blogs/sxsw/archive/2006/03/sxsw_2006_day_3.php http://www.dailycolonial.com/go.dc?p=3&s=2290 http://www.tweedmag.com/news.html?article=20060123021044 http://home.hamptonroads.com/stories/story.cfm?story=95225&ran=117297
Pooks
I found another site a while back that was along the similar lines. It allowed you to enter the band/artist name then you would get an extended flowchart type thing which showed bands that were connected due to the similar style of music they played. I'll try and dig out the link again.

Njugle
Have you Pandora fans received 'the email' yet.Due to royalties issues as of 15th January Pandora will be blocked from UK usage I'm devastated. Pandora is the only thing that has encouraged me to buy new music in recent times, to block it for royalties issues is the height of irony in my case! I've tried some of those other services above, but none has come close to Pandora for me. My brain has just formulated a plan use 'Audio hijack' to record my favourite stations non-stop for the next week so i'll still have them to listen to. It's either that or move to the US........ [edit], well that confirms it. I just searched on 3 of the other sites for one of the artists i purchased an album of recently, after hearing them on Pandora, and the other services all came up with 'Not Found.'[/edit]
Pooks
Yeah, I got the email. Seeqpod as mentioned in another thread somewhere is a good alternative.
