HFS
I am interested in moving to Shetland in several months. Anyone interested in having a residential farrier, please contact me so I can make up my mind. You can find more information about me on my website: http://www.credo-web.co.uk/highland_farrier/
muddypuddle
Suggest you look at the Indoor School thread and perhaps contact the Shetland Riding Club??

mgb2010
I'm sure other folks would agree with me that we would love a resident farrier. However, given the relatively small number of ridden horses and the even smaller number that are shod all year round, I would very much doubt that we could support one full time. It would be worth contacting the riding clubs directly, it was only a while back that Helen Thompson was seeking farrier services through the press and had someone come north to shoe hers. I would suspect that she could be potentially the largest single customer on the island. As per muddypuddle's suggestion, contact the Shetland Riding Group they have just opened an indoor arena to members and the public so they will be (or are surely going to be) involved with much of the riding community. Fifi
Hi HFS, You might want to speak to the last farrier who has now retired - Bruce Wilcock. He would be able to tell you about the amount of work involved. All his contact details are here - http://www.brucewilcockforgings.com/contact_us.htm
mgb2010
Silvercloud, they have been posting out literature on safe riding on the road and there was a letter included regarding their indoor arena. It is in the Hatchery Building at Girlsta, they have put in kicking boards, put down a surface, sorted the lighting etc. They also state that the facilities are insured (3rd party liability?).They are offering the facility to anyone "£10 per hour for Members, £15 for non-members". Their website is at http://www.shetlandcommunities.org/src/ I think they are doing really well securing the facilities they require and then offering them out. Well done Keep up the good work! horseandme
As everybody knows, it's only a part time job (being a residential farrier in the Shetlands). But I would be ever so hapy to have one. Also hearing the rumours that going around now, the Shetland equine people would love to have a residential farrier. Hope all works out for you!
