    Njugle

Anybody got some good stories about Njugles? - This'll be wan fur dee Njugle! Theres certainly many a place named after the Njugle - Njugleswater above Scalloway being the prime example.
  2. Was the problem not partly to do with the fact that the design had been decided before the site for the building was fully considered. If you look at the design of the building it would have been more suited to the open space and look of Leith, there in front of the SE buildings where it was touted to be placed. Then all hell broke loose and it was to rumble in around Calton Hill somewhere .. then they ended up settling for where it sits now next to Holyrood. The lack of space added greatly to the problems they had in building it! And yes Bryan ... I've worked on building sites where the clerk of works comes around and tells you to rip up everything you've just put down ... 'cos they've just got a new layout hot from the architects office that has to be implemented. You know, and all the people you work with know, and half the time the clerk of works knows too that it'll no be long before you're asked to put it back exactly the same way - if not to just rip it up again. Disjointed! You live with it and know that you're getting paid for it! It annoys you at first .. but you soon realise not to worry! Sad, but true!
  3. *Waiting for the reaction of the meeting to hit the boards* anyone else on edge
  4. I suppose thats the best idea. We do seem to be introducing new threads at a rate of knots
  5. I read a very interesting snapshot article in this months Scientific American regarding wave power generated from "magnetic linear generation bouys". Basically the gist is that there are no moving parts as such and the electricity is produced as the bouy moves up and down in the water with the magnets moving and creating electricity as they do so. This is seen as being able to produce more energy than does tidal power - and would be an interesting topic for anyone to pursue should they be interested in such things..?!
  6. Indeed you may have hit the nail on the head there! I was wrapped up in the Shetland thing for a minute there ... but can definetly see the benefit of a wider scope! Done! You better start posting in it now boyo!!
  7. I've taken you up on this one ... please find a new history section!

    Portal

Heres a new site being setup by the SIC: http://www.shetland-news.co.uk/pages/news%20stories/03_2006/agencies_plan_community_website.htm I like the idea and the purpose behind this new site. A good central point for information. However, would anybody care to elaborate on what happened to all the money that was spent on the shetland.org.uk site? "The Official" shetland portal? Should that not be doing now, what this new SIC site is attempting to do? It's made by the same people! So does that mean the SIC have shelled out more money to them again?
  9. Have been aware of cars thundering about at ungodly speeds that I'm not even going to post on this board! Lets just say that we're talking the very top end of the speedometer with needles flailing madly! Unfortunatlely I've been involved in a few crashes too .. not all by my hand! One that I amazingly walked away from unscathed - yet had I been wearing a seatbelt and not been thrown from the vehicle, I would have been crushed!!! I've grown a lot older and looking back on these days a shudder goes down my spine when I think of the sheer idiocy of it all! There have been various deaths in recent years - these people now no more than a meer statistic to the young "fools" (of which I was one!) that thunder around our roads today. Its a sad fact that "sense" only really comes with experience and age - though we drill into todays youth right and wrong, the culture of cars and speed is one that is very much tied into the psyche of young men across the country! Shetland being virtually full of open and relatively straight roads is a heady, yet foolish, mix for many!
  10. This is a point under scrutinisation.... ... the beauty of forums are that you are to an ends anonymous as it suits, though not entirely hiding behind a facade, you are hiding behind a username (he says, posting as trout!!) ... the guest problem that is seen on many boards is one that is under consideration by the Shetlink team... .. it has to be noted that registration of a "board" gives users far more exciting features as those that "troll" around in the guest status..... you have the ability to private message, have recent post indicators, and more!! Besides.. as has been pointed out in previous "situations" in the consideration of Guest users .... does having a username .. or being known in a public sense on a "board" .. not give more "clout" to points that you may wish to put across...???? *thinking about coming out of his fishy closet!!*
  11. Of course we are .. all "visionary" buildings nowadays are extravagent and over the top ! It goes with the territory. What architect is going to build a building for sensible costs if they can eat into an inflated budget to realise their "potential" and have a "great" building on their portfolio? Not many! Rest assured there are many that will write away the money to back it too as they have little idea beyond that which is set in front of them as gospel! You just have to look at what has happened in Edinburgh and the Scottish parliament - an analogy that is used often, but one that is fresh in everyones minds!
  12. This is an interesting point .. and a good reason, I guess along with all the membership bonuses like recent post indicators, private mail etc, as to why registering here at Shetlink is a good idea moving forward! To have a name behind your posts, though still being as good as anonymous, lends more clout to any argument you may want to put across!
  13. Crikey ! So how much did it cost you again to make your online questionnaire for on here?? 8O
  14. Yes, this is indeed an interesting time! A political forum would certainly be a topical area for those inclined to vent and "get things off thier chest", as they say!? - an interesting point! So who else says, Yay - lets have a politically based forum?
  15. As high as Edinburgh by all accounts!
  16. PM me the url you are trying to post. Pretty interested in what this is all about?
  17. http://www.shetlink.com I can't recreate the error! http://www.attheedgemusic.co.uk/cats/logo.jpg
  18. Please give more details to help rectify your issue. which thread? what were you doing before the error? what were you doing to cause the error? thanks.
  19. Oh .. and there is a story that the man that invented dipping headlights came from Fladdabister! Sold the patent to Leylands - who in turn sold it to Ford.
  20. Kate Adie's family came from voe .. and I'm not sure if she wasn't brought up there when young?
  21. Has anyone clicked through to the Scotsman article http://news.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=332832006 about the Shetland Bus and Nazi Germans? Quite and interesting read.
  22. Dunno ! Lord - we should be for being such nerds that we know what that means! LOL
  23. "Rolls on Floor Lauging" Though the vote is 11:1 this is out of 105 people that have actually signed up here! If you think about it - this is how percentages are calculated and how actual legislation actually gets made! Welcome to democracy!!
