  1. Folk will always drift towards the more populated areas that is why they became more populated in the first place. A bridge, tunnel, ferry or the invent of molecular transportation will make no odds to the folk that don't want to be in a place that can't employ them it just means it won't take them so long to go back to visit. On the contrary. Unst has seen an influx of new residents since cheap, plentiful accomodation has become available. Millions of people wish to leave the crowded cities for an island in the sun. Even Lerwick residents would move out to the isles if they could commute to work in under an hour.
  2. Not one of you has mentioned communication. If roads were extended to the outer isles,by means of bridges or tunnels,so that people could easily commute from end to end of the county I think that you would find that many would drift out of town, bact to the rural areas. People who can't commute tend to move into the centre so that they can access all the expensive facilities which are only viable in the centre.
  3. Good for you Styles. I hope that you end up as a multi-billionaire.

    Ringtones.

Have just been reading my copy of Garageband news and seen an interesting article on getting people to download music from your site to use as ringtones. Simply contact www.myxertones.com. They send you some code which allows people to enter their phone number on to your site to put your music on their device. You can even charge for the service if you wish. Sounds interesting.
  5. Hitler believed in medical experiments on prisoners. We fought a war to get rid of him. Were you taught that at school?
  6. You are so bloody literal that it hurts. Does everything revolve around football?
  7. We seem to be confusing ' International football teams' and playing football internationally. Jonners suggested that Shetland, like Gibraltar, could play in Euro and World Cup qualifiers. Commodore stated that it would be ridiculous for Gibraltar to play internationally. I was commenting on those statements. As far as I know, teams like Rangers and Celtic play in the European Cup matches. They are not restricted to purely Scottish players therefore a team calling itself Gibraltar United would not have to be composed of Gibraltarians. Nor would a Shetland team have to exclude people who were resident but not born here. On the other hand, I agree that a national football team should be composed of players born in that country. The fact that the Shetland football team was composed totally of Shetland born athletes was purely co-incidental. They were competing internationally not competing as a national team. At no time did I suggest that the selection process was faulty or that there was discrimiination. You put that interpretation on to my post. Who represents Shetland internationally is entirely up to the selectors. I deliberately avoided mentioning individuals. I wonder however if you were one of the many people who so vociferously commended Sakchai for representing Shetland and Scotland internationally when it was feared that he would be deported?
  8. I can't speak for football because I gave that sport up half a century ago and never did follow any team as a spectator. However. I am certain that a good many of those representing Shetland at the Island Games were not Shetland born. One law for some and not for others? Do I have to be absolutely word specific in my posts? I said that I couldn't speak for football, yet you take my comment to specifically refer to football. My contention is that a good many of Shetland's sporting greats are incomers, not native Shetlanders. I have already been slated on the BBC Island blog site for suggesting that people who represent Shetland should be natives. That includes babes born in Aberdeen before the denials come flooding in. It seems that people accept that you can represent the area in which you live,no matter where you were born. So. What's the problem with Gibraltar offering homes to the world class players? why did you post it in the International FOOTBALL for Shetland thread then 8O Because the thread was discussing international football. Do I have to be an expert on every subject on which I comment or can I, like most, Just blether on about anything which takes my fancy. Are you an expert on world football?

  11. If Gibraltar is rich,as reputed to be, the Association can simply buy the best players in the world and have no fear of being hammered.
  12. Apologies Ghostrider. I thought that we were discussing Superstores.
  13. Did you seriously think before giving that silly answer. Why are the big stores not here? The usual answer is that the population is too small. Yet. Twenty years ago there was no major store then the Co-op came along. This was a successful project so the predecessors of Somerfields came along. Now both are planning major extensions (it is rumoured) and the Co-op has opened a sub branch. Even a small store will make a profit if it is selling the things which people want.
  14. There was no top ten when I was born. No TV and not very many radios so it will have to be Shirley Temple with "Somewhere over the rainbow."
  15. John Coutts always makes an excellent job of writing Northern Outlook. This week however,he has surpassed his previous standards. His final paragraph, regarding 2nd September in past years,reads:- And on the same day in 1944,the Holocaust diarist,Anne Frank, was sent to Auschwitz, while somewhere over war-torn Europe,George Bush senior succesfully ejected from a burning aircraft. The first event was truly tragic, and given the erratic and unstable presidency of the USA today, perhaps the second was also. How does that grab you?
  16. Bravo Ghostrider. For once, you and I are in total accord. Now. Why can't you show the same compassion to fellow humans?
  17. Sorry that I didn't see the above post last night. I was busy chatting with pb abut that time, until my link started playing up about 20-45hrs. I really must try to curb my sarcasm on the threads. It is not understood. I stand chastised.
  18. That's because,as you proved earlier,you have no imagination.
  19. Maybe the RedTop press is another word for 'gutter press'. Just like Shetland Roses are another name for empty McEwan cans?
  20. Where do you find this REDTOp press?
  21. I currently have a chat window open. This tells me that claudias, peeribryan and trout are using the room. Yet,when I try to type I simply get the bell sound which indicates that I am not permitted to enter. At one time I had six overlapping chat windows open so I am going to turn off the auto reply.
  22. Thanks for your concern guys. I have now tried Messenger on Safari,Firefox,Flock and Opera on my Mac. All show the site perfectly, except for the pre-send typing window. Even the smileys appear. What browser do you use pb?
