Without European funding who will fund the tunnels to the islands?
  2. Hmph ! Seal probably a good idea, but by the time each sign gets surveyed and the necessary planning is granted the cost will have spirlled
  3. £120 per year---you can buy a dish for under £40 but this rental probably includes the accoutrements like cable and equipment as well, and of course the cost installation. nowtsed the choice is yours.
  4. In my opinion nothing can beat the friendly glow and the warmth of a solid fuel fire, and because the air is circulating I think they are far heathier. Your not sitting breathing the same air all the time as most of it goes up the chimney being constantly replaced with fresh air.. Pitty aboot da ess n da stoor !
  5. At £5 per 10kg TESCO coal seems a bit expensive. Jewson's works out a fraction over 36p per kg and Buildbase(Hays) well seems they have given up selling red flame (antracite) Is the availability of antracite smokeless fuel getting more difficult ?
  6. blue beetle I know nothing about the SSMO,but it obvious that all fishing has to be controled. Boats are getting bigger and bigger and with the help of modern technology catching more and more for the benefit of less and less as there are far fewer boats so less men required. Used to be hundreds of folk employed in the fishing industry --how many now? Scallop dredgers have more and more powerful engines and the capability to cover more ground. The same grounds are being fished by different boats thus completely cleaning it out. The same goes for crab and lobster fishing. Shetland needs to control its fishing grounds, and needs to pay particular attention to it's inshore fisheries . This is not going to be easy and what ever measures are taken will never meet everyones approval, but if everthing is cleaned out there will simply be nothing for anyone There also has to be some sensible system for the occasional fisherman who only does a little fishing for pleasure ,there would be no point having a boat if one could not try the odd creel from time to time. .
  7. Shellfish don't grow like vegetables,it takes something like 4 years for a scallop to reach a decent size if I am right. Crabs grow a bit faster, would I be correct in saying 1½ years for some. Bearing in mind that it takes a long time for shellfish to grow surely manageing the sea bed and restricting fishing in certain areas for a time to allow these shellfish to reach a marketable size without being desturbed would be a very senseable thing to do Nobody wants regulations and restrictions in any buisness but sometimes it is necessary. . .
  8. Maybe du should consider staandin?---Nae chance shetlander,i dunna want tae catch yun toon hall bug!
  9. Every few years I go to the polling station and cast my vote hopeful that the newly elected will be better than the last, but there seems to be a very contagious disease that seems to affect most who spend any time in the town hall and robs them of all common sense. Guess it will not be to long till we pack a bit of paper in the black box again and start the process of hope and inticipation all over again.
  10. Here we go Up Helly Aa time again --baloons would be better!
  11. I know someone who was in the scallop processing for years who eventually had to leave and get another job as the size and irregularity of supply made it impossibie to guarantee a wage due to the fact he was on piece work. Good big scallops were good as they were able to get a decent weight and therefore make a respectable wage, but this was becomeing very infrequent and was mainly blamed to overfishing. The size of scallops probably has little to do with quality,(?) but will certainly affect quantity. From this I can only deduce that some form of control is absolutely essencial so as to protect all those involved in the fishing industry, fishermen, processors and consumers, and that includes all types of fishing. Every Tom,Dick, and Harry cannot be allowed to fish, there has to be some organisation or it will be depleted Competition is good in any industry but over competition will ruin it for everyone.
  12. whalsa, apparently tremendous damage is being caused. Plenty of info to be googled. This is such an important fishery that alternative methods should and probably are being explored,as to continue as it is,is not really an option. Certainly would not be allowed on the Great Barrier Reef, but our shores are probably not supporting anything as exotic as that never the less shame for our local sea beds to be destroyed. But folk have to make a living.
  13. I am surprised that anyone is allowed to "harrow" for scallops at all, considering the amount of damage that is being caused to the sea bed. There must be a better way.
  14. Possibly a little persumptuous of me,but I suspect that once the 20MPH speed limit is made legal that speed cameras will be introduced in an efford to catch anyone who should have a temporary lapse of memory and exceed it. Money maker for someone
  15. A driveing hazard in my opiniion is Tescos car park, should they ban all vehicles there for the protection of the public !
  16. Will our Banks accept Australian dollars?
  17. I ask the same question whalsa, typical council spending money on all the wrong things, believe me it is not required. If there is any speeding surely the occasional speed camera would sort things out. I bet Disability Shetland wid pit dis ill spent money to better use!
  18. Well I have little to add to the comments that have already been made except to say that I would rather see the young ones experiment with drink and not with drugs.
  19. Ma'be some poor soul short of xmas presents Little bit to early for the discarded brucks of a turkey
  20. Well there we have it,the decision has been delivered so let us all respect it and put this issue to rest. If there is any issue with this it is the extortionate cost £208,000 this is absurd and i would like to see it broken down and justified.
  21. Are you psysic George --how do you know what the people who support Alistair want ! -- I certainly do'nt.
  22. Well i'm not sure voteing to bomb Syria was good or bad,but Scotland will certainly pay a heavy price for not supporting this action. Watch the National contracts and possibly oil/de-commisioning contracts ect Will they come to Scotland. Shame on the SNP
  23. Thanks for the graphs Arabia Terra, but of course this is pure speculation, might be right, could well be wrong and I'm certainly in no position to prove it either way. We cannot believe everything we read. A lot of it is hyped up.
  24. No Colin i am not advocating that we all start burning peats, coal and logs creating vast amount of smoke ultimately createing smog which will affect peoples health. What i'm saying is now that we no longer polute in this manner what effect did all the smog have on the climate when it was there. Did it cool the earth down, cause more snow. There is where the answer lies. There is no doubt in my mind that much of the change in the climate is a result of a the cleaner atmosphere, being created by the way we live now. Off course this is good but do we ever hear anyone debate what the climate would be like today if all the lums in Europe were reeking tonight, spewing vast amounts of dust and vile smoke into the sky no its all codswallop about greenhouse gases ect As i said before the world is simply going back to what it was before man found fire, and if we stop.burning fossil fuel all together the climate will simply readjust to suit. If only we had accurate records of say 2000 yrs
