  1. I agree that the council could save heaps of money by cutting back on the stationary/printing costs. Most of the communication that I receive from the council comes printed on expensive thick paper. Is this really required? Most of the stuff would be fine on cheapo 80gsm paper. Do all the leaflets produced have to be on thick glossy paper? Ordinary paper would suffice in a lot of cases and then they would have enough money to employ someone to ensure that the leaflets are grammatically correct and free from spelling mistakes. Nothing worse than picking up an expensive glossy brochure to discover mistakes!
  2. I am not a number! I am a free man! Supposedly.
  3. AFAIK this is exactly what happens. Your 3 reception will be as good as O2's but you won't get any of the 3G gubbins. Then again this may have changed.
  4. Google certainly don't lack in the humour department which is a very rare thing for a company of its size. Don't know if any of you have realised but Google Maps caters for the moon as well. Zoom in for best effect:- http://moon.google.com/
  5. I've set up a fair few and it really depends what you are after. They all do much the same at the end of the day. The only thing I would recommend is that you update the firmware as soon as you get it as most companies regularly release new firmware to sort out bugs/niggles etc... 3Com and Linksys are a couple that come to mind. The best thing to do would be to look around for special offers/good prices then post the model numbers back here.
  6. I think most people are in agreement that although Jarlshof is perhaps not the best name for the place, it will never change due to it being a large tourist attraction for Shetland. What surprises me more than anything is why folk 'back in the day' never reclaimed the majority of stone there to use for dyke building and so on. This also poses the question as to where the majority of stone came from for dykes in the past. Is it possible that many other 'sites of interest' were taken apart to provide farming boundaries? In my opinion this was almost a normal practise.
  7. Heheeeh, you have to laugh. The thing I don't understand is that they are talking about increasing the inter-island ferry fares yet have they not been offering free travel to Unst folks for some time? Are they going to reinstate the fares to Unst or increase the fares to everybody else to help this subsidy? If I remeember correctly the council unanimously decided that free fares to Unst would only cost Circa £200,000 and would not be a problem. As for upping the costs of old folks homes...I read somewhere recently (past month or two) probably the Shetty Times, that it cost a helluva lot of money (£600?ish) to keep an oldie in a home for a week. Why? They have a room. Not a hotel room. They have a room with basic facilities. They get fed. They have people to see to them day and night. These people are well paid. It still doesn't help to reflect the cost though. I would like to see a proper audit as to where the money goes that these 'oldies' have to contend with. It can't all be on nappies!
  8. Damn you! I was trying to think of something to do with the Matrix Can't be beaten!
  9. It gets worse, almost no editing required. http://www.crcshetland.co.uk/stuff/escape.jpg
  10. Indeed there will be no problem. I would strongly suggest avoiding USB if you can. A lot of these routers tell you to plug your machine in via USB and configure the router that way. There is really no point unless (Like Njugle) you have no other option. The ethernet route is the best bet and you can configure it by pointing your browser (or telnet client) to the IP address of the router. Normally 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 by default.

Surely it would need to be 'Alco Ollick'?

  14. Indeed this is correct. I believe it came down to the fact that someone might accidentally take a tin of Pedigree Chum out of their cupboard thinking it is a tin of beans and then end up poisoning themselves. Yet another great achievement in this world we live in.
  15. Political correctness gone mad again. These are kids. They have to be taught how to deal with these situations, not prosecuted for them. I think that it should be the NUT (appropriately named) that ought to be given a ticking off for not having the capability to discipline the teachers that failed to bring this to a stop long before the six months that it continued. Nutters.
  16. Posting from Shetty, currently wondering what is going to blow past the window next...
  17. This strain of the bird flu has been around in China since at least 1996. Mostly it seems to be the press that is making a big thing of it. SARS comes to mind.

    CCTV

If you are going to commit a crime will you do it when there is a policeman standing next to you? If you are going to commit a crime will you do it when there is a mobile CCTV van next to you? If you are going to commit a crime will you do it when there is CCTV installed? I (if I was going to commit a crime, which I'm not, honest) would say no to the first two and possibly to the third one. In the third scenario I might not realise that there are cameras installed.
  19. Good stuff Hambone. Always good to hear the bands before you see them without having to go rooting around. Not a bad radio voice either, I am sure SIBC will take you on inna second .
  20. The Museum has a good collection of photos online and it is a useful resource that is available to everyone. THe copyright issue is a difficult one. Yes, they should have a proper copyright notice in place (would probably be an excuse to employ another consultant within the council!). The fact of the matter is, as has already been mentioned, copyrighting images is a very difficult thing to do. With the watermark in place it makes it a difficult and tedious process to remove if you want the image for free. This results in most people that want a copy of the image having to purchase it. Using some of the anti-theft procedures available that don't use some form of watermark allows the end-user to simply take a screenshot of the image and then use it at will. Might deter one or two home users but most will soon suss out that it isn't that hard. As has already been said, most of the images available are of poor quality already and the best bet would be to purchase a high resolution copy for best effect. This isn't to say that in the future the images will not be of better quality however and may need a better form of anti-theft. By then we'll all be wanting holographic images projected in front of us and expect the microwave to produce anything that we type into it. So no problem. No more copyright, you'll be able to clone-yer-own!
  21. Pooks wanders over the water to Bressay where he sees land, land and more land. All looking very desirable to be built on. What was the question again? Weren't the Council planning to build a pile of houses shortly?
  22. That would mean not even having to leave the couch! Great idea! Somebody fetch me a beer!
  23. Thanks for the Planet Earth link, haven't seen that one before. For those that are interested, it uses Flash 8 video streaming which seems to be the way forward for high quality streaming video. Vividas seems to be the preferred company for a lot of Movie Trailers etc.. that are shown on the web. Click on the link and take a look at some of the stuff they have done down the right-hand side of the page. If folk are going to be able to watch the latest films instantly with no delay in downloading then these new fangled Cinema things are sure to take a hit, especially with convergence of the PC into the living room...
  24. Google Earth is a nifty piece of software. It is also worth checking out some of the dedicated websites for addons and things. Another proggy in a similar vein that is worth a look is Nasa's Worldwind.
