  1. The license fee is an unfortunate thing. Nobody likes to pay for something that they may never use. Hopefully once the analogue switch off happens then the license fee will be removed in return for a subscription based package such as Sky. That way you aren't forced into paying for something you might not want.
  2. I can understand if you want to keep yourselves from being known but can you please try and pick a semi-unique guest name? That last few posts started to get confusing. Unless of course you are one and the same with alter-egos in which case carry on!
  3. I remember dis fae when I worked sooth. Me midder phoned me wan day and telt me I wis 'Tokking' and to 'gie it up'! You get used to 'talking' in the way you do depending on the surroundings you are in. There are very few Shetlanders who speak in true Shetlandic tongue when there is a Sooth-moother amongst the crowd. That's the way of life.
  4. Thanks for the replies. My worries aren't with the original build cost of the new venue but the ongoing costs. I feel that the space used for a cinema could be better used for other projects. I am in no way an expert on cinemas but know that for them to be worthwhile need a very good sound system which I believe the Garrison has spent a lot of money on in the past few years. To actually get the license to show new release films I believe costs an arm and a leg. This would obviously have to be an ongoing thing. People aren't going to go unless they are getting to see new releases. New releases cost money. Bridder it is I was purely meaning that it would be hugely discounted compared to the costs associated with other Recording Studios. If there is somewhere available that people can go to without resorting to heading Sooth then it is obviously saving costs. I personally don't know what facilities are available in Shetland at the moment. Good to hear it.

Indeed.... Anyway, had a 'Mint Aero' in Flints yesterday. Would recommend it as it really does taste like the real thing. Can't remember what was in it mind you but all in all it tasted pretty good.
  8. 50 odd in my younger days. Can't do it now, although I fairly often go without sleep for an evening just to catch up on work. Anybody that says they don't begin hallucinating or having peculiar thoughts by that stage is pure and simply lying. Your brain eventually gives in and starts to go into sleep state whether your body is still awake or not. I try and avoid it now after recently (past year) having a particularly busy time I went to the toilet for a pish and next I knew I was on the floor having fainted. Your body can only take so much and as far as I am concerned it is not worth it to overwork yourself. I would imagine that Shetland is worse than a lot of other places for this due to the last Tuesday in January amalgamating into several days. Get up at 5-6ish then continue all night, this is then continued by hop night and then the hair of the dog the following day. If you opt to stay up or get involved with a few parties then that is a good few days without kip...
  9. Interesting topic. I have always kept an open mind with ghosts. One thing I can not abide is that fools on UK Living (Most Haunted), a lot of utter and total SH*te. What intrigues me most are animals and children. For a while my dogs took to barking at nothing, this could be explainable by something outside of the human hearing range but maybe not. For a while my little boy would point at the corner of the room and say that 'Grandad' was there. He would describe him pretty well and then carry on playing with his toys. It should be noted that we live in my grandfather's old house...coincidence? Who knows? Either way it hasn't affected me and I won't be needing to call the Ghostbusters any time soon.
  10. The worrying thing though is that BBC will most probably use the figures gained from the Radio Scotland/SIBC coverage to decide whether it is worth updating the transmitters. As nobody is going to want to rush out and buy a DAB radio for two stations then the figures will be way below what it would be should they offer a full DAB service. My reckoning is that they will be holding off until the big analogue shutdown whenever that has been put off until. Does anybody know what the latest is? I would check but can't be bothered.
  11. Another point that should be noted is that Firefox renders pages on a slower connection LOADS faster than Internet Explorer. This is something that Netscape managed in the past as well. It seem to load the layout of the page and text then loads in the images. Internet Explorer tends to load in a 'top-down' fashion. It makes a big difference to those stuck with a slow connection.
  12. It is a sad fact that this is the case. It should at least be brought to their attention, as part of a History project or something else.
  13. You'll end up smelling of reek anyway when you wade through the crowds of smokers standing outside the front door!
  14. Splendid lady...but NOTE...LADY...no touching! Glowering allowed dependent upon appropriate appreciative allowance from explicit members of family.
  15. Is this not a democratic society? Vote them ALL in. Stick them in a big mud pit and the winner could decide the outcome of the particular topic of the day. It would be no worse than the current shambles that the political system is in. If Labour is the working man's party then I must either be rich or totally destitute because their policy doesn't seem to cater or care for any of my needs.
  16. Because it would be down to the council to decree when the weather pattern had lifted significantly above 20 degrees. This would obviously result in a consultation which would then mean that due to the council offices being built of a different material to the rest of the world they were entitled to a 365 day holiday while the rest of us had to make do with 19 degrees at the warmest point. On the plus side it might mean that the public has more say in the general goings on within the council...
  17. Doon aroond Spiggie isna too bad. Especially this time of year...none of those bloody campers about! In all seriousness though it is in a sheltered area, beaches nearby and if the need arises due to being in close proximity to small children, there is a pub nearby. Although, it is for sale at the moment and I fear that a night of camping may reduce you to buying the place merely to get the available beds that you require.
  18. I don't know if many of you know this but the Shetland Family History Society has quite a comprehensive collection of peoples past in a database that is accessible with 'Brothers Keeper'. I don't think the membership is much, around a tenner a year. Turns out my family history goes back to aroundabout 800ad as does many other Shetlanders. Worth a look. That is of course unless you are McFly. I seem to recall a story from his brother. Something to do with Ireland, Cattle rustlers and running away and hiding. Not a lot of family history left when your family has done such a good job of hiding your existence.
  19. Like I said, the estimations come from BT. If any of you have had dealings with these wonderful people then you will know that it is more than likely to be scheduled for 2010 which means we will see it sometime before our great grandchildren join us.
  20. I sense a Nikon/Canon feud approaching somewhere. I take tha odd piccy now and again and at the moment would like to get my hands on a Canon EOS350d. Seems to be the best 'bang for the buck' as it were. Any arguments? Totally off topic of course...
  21. Funny you should mention that. Pretty sure I read something about Nokia and O2(possibly) collaborating to introduce a 'Digital' radio service sometime soon.
  22. I had a (either 1200 or 2400 baud) modem for the Commodore 64 and BBS systems were the only option. No web thenadays! Even dialling in locally when Zetnet wasn't Zetnet cost enough. America must have been an absolute fortune. Exactly what were you downloading Yaduk?

I found another site a while back that was along the similar lines. It allowed you to enter the band/artist name then you would get an extended flowchart type thing which showed bands that were connected due to the similar style of music they played. I'll try and dig out the link again.
  24. It is a bit of a bummer for us non-gaelic speaking peeps. Then again think on the areas that do still have Gaelic tongue. The majority of it is kids programmes, Dottoman etc... Would we be arguing if it was Shetlandic? spoken programmes? I think that the least they should do is provide subtitles for the rest of us. Was it not Grampian that pioneered "Micro-Region" advertising allowing for the local areas to receive local advertising? If they can do this then why not have local programmes as well?? I can see it now. Live from the cross, local peoples opinions on local peoples needs! Avid viewing I am sure. 8O Cheerio
