  1. 4 barrels on a pallet (single stacked) so thats 208ltrs x 4 = 832lts divdie that by £100 ( unless double stacked still come to £100 shipping?) the fuel price for the whole of the uk is stupid!! UK govt is to blame they will run this country down so far it will cost the earth to get us out!
  2. As has already been said what the hell is happening to the UK cuts cuts cuts!! where will it end and what will we have when it ends? i dont think i wanna be here to find out! when you go for a MCA exam esp the Orals so you can get your watchkeeping certs all they do is preach safety safety safety! now this is just taking the piss, closing very very valuable stations! i serioulsy wonder how many people at Coastguard HQ think work at sea, on platforms, near the sea and live by the sea!! if this goes ahead there will be many deaths without any doubt! if it gets turned around then theyve wasted even more money starting this carry on!
  3. been in Spain, Malta and recently Antayla Turkey just a few days left and back into Turkey on crew boat then Antayla - istanbul - London - Aberdeen - shetland !! lets just hop all flights are flying!!
  4. BRRRRRRRRRR..... all i can is glad im working in Turkey! 24degrees today here in Antalya!!not looking forward to coming back to a frozen UK in a few weeks!
  5. as i said before i failed my driving test for giving a cyclist as much room as i would have thought was safe!! haha dosent do much for cyclists!!
  6. ahh heres a thread ive some experience!! while taking my driving test about 7 yrs ago i came up behind a cyclist at the shetland hotel, there was a lot of traffic on the road and wound have no chance of getting past him without a car on other side and me squezing past between them so i stayed back and admitidly going about 10-15mph while waiting for a suitable gap then i went past - i failed this test due to being to hesitant for not as the tester said going between oncoming cars and cyclist!! then on my next test i came up to a cyclist at the top of gulberwick and a truck coming other way so i did everything right and overtook i might not have done had i not failed previously due to being hesitant but was still safe in my mind - not in this testers mind and i failed again for dangerous overtaking manouver!! lucky on 3rd test no cyclists on road! driving instructor couldnt belived i failed first one still i dnt think theres space to pass a cyclist on that bit of road with oncoming traffic! so cyclists your a pain use the bikes in gym!! oh and why do some insist on cycling beside each other!! rant over
  7. i never said anything about there wages i work for a norweigen company! but most shetlanders dnt earn norweigen wages so how this helps im confused?
  8. while ive nothing against norway iv spent a lot of time in bergen, stavanger, kristiansund and a few others inbetween but shetlanders would be the first to complain of the prices!! a similar night out in norway would cost around 150 - 180 quid compared with 70 - 90 in uk - you soon get sick of that plus the chemicals in the beer (even if the women make life better)!! but aside from the flight connections there are no other connections with europe. shopping in norway way more pricey than aberdeen! please dont put these hair brained ideas in our govt head!! we should be campaining for aberdeen harbour to deepen its channel and make better breakwaters!!
  9. haha i like that if its true why would i bother lying about the price of a flight! one way 7.45 flight via orkney to aberdeen 45 quid with ads! lets be honest the ferry is a lifeline service yes thats lifeline for ppl, freight, etc the freight dosent care about the weather its the bloody ppl if northlink warn you about the weather before you get on its going to be rough they dont do it for fun! if you dnt travel well they will refund you. personally i will travel in any weather as will many many shetlanders so more important that northlink actually try and sail! ive been on smaller supply vessels on northlinks route when theyve stayed in port - we didnt die!! if your travelling in winter it mite be wise to either fork out for flights and use boat as back up or leave one day earlier? i realise this is difficult and expensive but the other option would be to live on the mainland?
  10. yep glad someone has explained aberdeens problems and difficultys of getting a ship in and out in bad weather. rastis thanks its normally the draught of the ferry that is the problem, and yes aberdeen harbour is possibly to blame they know the ferry cant go anywhere else but our MSPs should at least ask the questions and publish some answers. i went up on boat and flew back on saturday reckoned this mite be coming my flight was 45 quid booked night before ferry would have been 10quid cheaper cant help the weather if it was easy to live in shetland there would be 50,000 ppl there (mainly cos council is too good to us) and then it wouldnt be what it is. its a pain i admit that but we are close to losing the best ferry service we have ever had mabye we should be happy they at least sailed and gave it a shot???
  11. aggree with zog shes kicks up some impressive waves!!
  12. Aberdeen harbour physically may not be suitable 100% of the time but Peterhead, Roysth, Scrabster have awful onward transport links and would be very remote preventing shoppers on foot which is one huge plus point of aberdeen. also all transport companies have basis in aberdeen and service the boat very well. what needs too be done is more money spent on aberdeen to make it more asscessible not only for the north boats but for the oil industry as well Aberdeen Harbour must have made a fortune over the year with little improvements made untill recently. plus aberdeens bus, rail and flight connections are very good.
  13. i stand corrected - will this cause massive problems on the route? during peak times?
  14. i had psoraisis on legs and some on arms had it for a long time (still do just not visible) found that whenever on holiday the saltwater would make it disapper, and after recent croatia holiday its all gone again!! going to try and make saltwater in the bath mabye once every 14days see if it keeps it away! sorry no help for ezemma tho
  15. the ferry is not upto the mca standards anymore with regards to accomadaton below sea level if i mind right there was a skipper or ex skipper who was writing about this in the paper during the tunnel, new terminal carry on, so we did know it was going to happen. mabye if the good ppl of whalsay / council could have come to a desicion on that sooner it would be at the planning stages. time for another new ferry? more expenditure which means cuts elsewhere? whalsay school? someone else will know a bit more on this.
  16. with a vessel the size of the SC it will be the masters decicion to have the anchor lowerd so its ready for use should it be required if they where to have a blackout and lose the DP systems can save time deploying the anchor. ive been on ships where when lying in norway we have lowerd the anchors to waterline this is masters desicion. after all its his ass on the line i dont think cheveron really care about GP enough to bother trying to lure them in haha!! Deepwater drilling must continue otherwise you all must stop using not only petrol, diesal, kerosene (airplanes) but roads, plastics - tvs, dvds, toys, shoes, clothes in some form or another hydrocarbons are used to make these and many others things we are now realient on anyone how things we can stop using oil needs to get real. GP do stupid stunts for press! jumping in front of fishing vessels?? safe?? hanging yourself on an anchor which could fail resulting in 3+ dead persons very smart! would love to see there risk assesments and permit to works that they carry out or perhaps they disregard all health and safety?? yes i work in the oil industry but i can see the world needs oil anyone that cannot is blind! of course we should try to rely on it less and less but while its there we wont!
  17. yeah they are most likley the ones being run from the lerwick Marina usally same every year, one place to look is at the marina on the gates down to pontons there used to be notices up about them. provided that is its boat fishing competitions i know last year it was every second sunday throughout the summer. prob run by the Marina Users Assocation but not 100% on that
  18. Garriock bros for the windows they will make the glass to size for you in the island, all other companys ship up glass and breakages are often common (can lead to delays esp is special sizes etc) so worth getting a quote from the glass centre, also have the window center who make the frams etc to whatever size. would def get the insulation shipped up i found it a lot cheaper south
  19. Now working in artic circle soon finished and ship transit to west of shetland then chopper off for me and rest of crew into shetland! very nice!
  20. Kristiansund is a lovely place i went offshore from there 4 weeks ago and had 3 days there waiting to leave, we had 27degrees and really is very beautiful but flight connections are not so great from there and i know having worked there back and fore for last few years. but its small compared with bergen or aberdeen a lot smaller! but if anyone goes there i suggest unkles and frigatten for beer and say you work offhore you will get it at offshore rate (cheaper)
  21. quite a few shops already open strange hours like lochside stores sure he opens at 6am and Alex morriosons hes open till 11 so is grantfield wouldnt take much for either of these to stay open 24/7. i aggree i also use late opening shops in norway and all over the world inc aberdeen - in norway there is a lot your right usally if theres a hotel nearby you will find one. handy for ppl on shifts
  22. i have found (as i live 50% of my time in aberdeen) that on some occasions Tesco fuel (where i normally fill up south due to clubcard points) is sometimes more expensive than shell (generally held as being better quaility fuel) many differnt opionions on that). so the 5p off would bring them just under or inline with other stations. so be aware that just cos you get 5 p off dosent make it cheapest always. tesco are not cheapest at everything the internet can be much cheaper but it pays to shop around (even in lerwick) lets face it we care about no 1 you know the money you earn and who you have to support i.e your family so you can decide if you have enough to support local shops and pay an inflated price in some cases or buy south. for me its the fact that you have the choice! just becasue tescos is here does not mean you must ues it no one forces you. but if 80% of ppl in shetland want to use it then better its here as it supports a lot of jobs (as opposed to not having tescos and people buying from south) because iam sorry to say i will never buy electrical equipment (tvs - Dvd player) from bolts its all top of range sony etc and much more expensive than south with an aftercare service that isnt worth £500 extra. Choice is a very very good thing!!!

    firewood

Garricok bros sell norweigen wood logs, in sacks and tonne bags i belive
  24. reason ive not been in world tastes is due to the poor location of the shop. and ive bought the stuff in tescos as its easy. much like 80% of shoppers i wont go out of my way to spend my money which is getting harder and harder to earn and more and more taken off you. if the shop was on the street where most ppl go once a week id be more inclined to pop in. i dont think they are closing as a direct result of tescos more likely that they havent been making enough money for over a year or more. out of interest where do all the takeaways buy there stock?
