  1. how come it always seems to be the south end that busses go aff da road
  2. are you talking about the ones that DITT have built?? the blue/red/purple ones they are a great example of timber frame/timber clad houses and are very strong indeed and also quick to put up and very well proven to stand up to the shetland weather whereas concrete domes are relatively unproven in the shetland climate, hopefully nigel will come to shetland, build one of his domes and prove us all wrong
  3. ok well those guys obviously know what they are doin but you are wanting to build concrete domes so this prefabricated timber frame video is basically useless also do you not know how bad concrete and steel are at conducting heat etc have you looked into using SIP'S panels probably cheaper and more thermo efficient, and as for the planning department giving it the ok i very much doubt they will unless these domes meet all the modern buliding regs which are quite strict, you were talking about covering these houses in grass i take it you would use sun tubes to get sunlight into the houses or are you wanting to use artaficial light, and having the services on the surface IMHO that looks horrible with conduit running everywhere and just looks a bit industrial
  4. i seem to be completely missing the point has some uneducated person asked you how you "grow" your peat
  5. right my match isnt exaxtly great but you expect to build 15000 houses in 20 years which is 750 houses a year which is 14.4 houses a week which is 2.06 houses a day now for your supposed massive IQ you dont seem very good at maths, there is absolutely no way that you can build two houses in a day please stop sprouting this bullcrap
  6. i think the main problem is as you have said it is cheaper to build new and the fact thet old croft houses are well small to say the least, i believe that there are grants you can get through the crofters commision to rebuild old croft houses but you also have a lot of things you have to do and i believe you cannot sell the house on as it tied to you, personally i would love to see old houses restored to former glory but alas the difference in price for a similar sized new build is quite substancial and in the current economic climate cost is the biggest factor regarding buying/building a house
  7. ok well thats quite a plan so would all these houses be the same or would they be all different?? as to be perfectly honest with you i think that 1000 houses the same would look absolute slester, now i have been involved in building a lot of houses in shetland and i can safely say the ones that are similar to each other are ones for HHA but it is usually confined to two or three semi-detached properties in a sea of private houses, gulberwick is a prime example of this, now the problem with building 1000 houses is that you will want to do it as cheap as possible so all the houses will enevitably be tha same layout, typical small little boxes witha little bit of garden if your lucky, and of course where will you get the money to do this?? are you going to do it out of your own pocket then rent/sell them to the council/hha???? if you are good luck to you, the reason why most building comnpanies in shetland are still in buisness is because they dont build houses expecting to sell them after they are built, they are sold even before a digger touches the field therefor guarenteeing that they cannot be caught out by the fall in house prices as has happened to a lot of companies south for example persimmon/redrow etc who have had to cut there workforce by thousands (maybe this is where you expect to get your workforce from). another point where are you thinking of sticking these odd 1000 houses??? all in one massive clump or spreading them out??? also whats the expected timsescale on this project?? anybody know how many houses have been built in shetland in the past say ten years????
  8. to be perfectly honest buying old council houses then refurbing them upto modern standards is going to cost a lot more than building new, take for example the house at lochside that has been demolished and is being rebuilt, which is going to be far cheaper than trying to update the existing buildings to meet current regulations/standards
  9. the two directors of jhb ltd are john halcrow fae burra and robert manson fae tingwall
  10. sprootle i wid say, who is the source?????

  12. are you sure that plastic stuff will hold??? i would seriously consider using the batton method as the shetland wind is rather fierce and will just lay yun plastic stuff it shreads
  13. As Douglas Adams once said "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools."
  14. beckb how old are your children??, as for your husband getting a job im pretty sure he would get a job very easilly (well you would at jhb they seem to give jobs to anyone, me included ) as said the rural life in shetland can be a little bit boring to say the least unless you are prepared to travel around and do lots of things, the leasure facilities are excellent, as said there is a multi million pound leisure centre in aith that gets very little use but is mainly for the kids from the school to do pe in as its a stone's throw away would you get that south??? i wouldnt think so as said the education in shetland is second to none
  15. depends what type of car it is but i would expect that it would need to be taken to a dealer/specialist especially if the car has an immobaliser

  19. The maths on the Paul McCartney-Heather Millsdivorce is as follows: After 5 years of marriage, he paid her $49 million. Assuming he got sexevery night during their 5 year relationship (which would NOT have happened!) itended up costing him $26,849 per time. This is Heather. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r301/hobbiniho/heathermc.jpg On the other hand, Elliot Spitzer's call girl, Kristen, an absolute stunnerwith a body like no other, charges $4,000 an hour. For anything! This is Kristen http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r301/hobbiniho/spitzercallgirlashleyalexandredupre.jpg Had Paul McCartney 'employed' Kristen for 5 years, he would've paid $7.3 million for an hour of sex every night for 5 years (a saving of $41.7million). Value-added benefits are: a 22 year old hot babe, no begging, no coaxing, nevera headache, plays all requests, ability to put BOTH legs around you (!!!), no b!tching and complaining or 'to do' lists. Best of all, she leaves when you're done, and comes back when you ask her. All at 1/7th the cost, with no legal fees. Sometimes renting makes far more sense.
