BigMouth
Why is it so difficult to sell a used car in Shetland? I know of several people who are struggling to sell cars at the moment. None are ridiculously priced. Is it the fear of the Shetland climate having taken its toll, or the fact that new cars are easy to buy these days or what? Marvin
A limited market I'm afraid....There will only be a handfull of people looking to buy a car at any particular time...and then, they might have to sell their car before buying another one. Then there is the internet...I bought my last car in Shetland but the one before I bought in Bradford. You can get a better deal and exactly the car you are after...in Shetland you basically have to take what is on offer... 'Sooth' cars (cars bought in from the mainland) tend to be in better condition because they wont have been in Shetland's salty atmosphere. The only way to sell secondhand cars in Shetland these days is to slash the price. Specialist cars might stand a better chance - sports cars 4x4, vintage etc..... Twerto
As Marvin said it a very select choice up here. and generally better condition from south if you are buying at the lower priced end of the second hand car market. My last car I bought, It was cheaper for me to travel to York to buy it than pick up a similar car from the strip at clickamin.
steven096
It is true, shetland does have a more salty atmosphere and it causes the cars to decline faster. However, if people just take the time and effort to wash the salt of the cars and keep covering the car with a an anti-rust solution (Waxoyl, Autoglym etc) All these items and more can be found at Garthspool auto shop. You can increase the life of a car up here by almost 3X if you just take the time and care over it! Sudden Stop
The best thing you can do is buy as new a car as you can, fae south, look after it yourself and keep it for a long time. That's the easiest way to cost effective motoring. Boring as {'f' it was funny in Father Ted 'eck'} but cheaper than buying and then trying to sell again up here... Claudias
^ ^ Agreed Spinner. I paid £31K for an Audi A4 sport 7 years ago. Despite the fact that it has only done 20.000 miles,it has stood rusting in a field for the last 18 months because it's book value is Zero. People expect me to give it away. BigMouth
I must admit that I have been looking for a car for a while. Not running one has many advantages, cost being the most obvious. I have always been the one in the past that has paid top dollar for everything then when it has come to the time to sell it, as you say Claudias, people want it for nothing. I have come to the conclusion though that if I am to have a car it will have to be a brilliant deal or I just wont bother. I don't need a flash car though. Just something to get me reliably from A to B. It makes a change to be a buyer in a buyers market.

Will you not eventually end up giving it away for scrap and getting absolutely nothing, rather than not much? That's a hell of a sum to pay for a car. I dread to think how much some of the Range Rovers are that I see pottering around Shetland, but I have to say that if you can afford it then you can spend it on whatever you like. It upset me when I saw my car sat in the drive costing me £1 a day in insurance and 50p a day in tax. I would have been going out of my mind with the daily devaluation of an expensive car. nautim
I saw instant depreciation when small child ate part of the trim off the rear passenger door... Slightly larger child did same to next car.... Next car now needing replaced. Child has had four teeth removed this week. Note - teeth removal was on the suggestion of the dentist...
