spencey7
I thought about resurrecting the "Have the police lost our respect?" thread from the back end of last year for this, but decided to start anew... For the purposes of something (fictional) I'm writing at the moment, do any anecdotes spring to mind of the Shetland police behaving in a particularly trivial manner? Obviously no names/locations/dates are necessary! Stories can concern anything atall - Vehicle problems, procedures, reactions to drunkeness etc.. I'm not looking to trigger a debate on whether or not these "trivial" instances were in fact good examples of proper policing, rather just to gather some stories really... Anyone? Fjool
Obviously no names/locations/dates are necessary!Nor desirable, I'll hasten to add. Any specifics will probably be removed. And I'm not really sure what kind of thing you mean by 'trivial' Don't want this to become a 'bash the police' thread, tbh.
Sudden Stop
Did get stopped in the car one night for nothing other 'driving late at night' Having just finished working a 7 hour shift at the pub I did have the smell of, lets face it - everything on me, but after one prompt breath test I was released to continue 'driving late at night' Gee whiz, perhaps I should have had someone walking in front of me waving a flag and ringing a bell. Guest Anonymous
One case which springs to mind was a rather zealous officer in 'da sooth end', who stopped a suspected drunk driver. The officer leaned his head in the window to confirm the smell of alcohol, and the driver kissed him full on the lips. In another case, late 70's, after about 7 pints in a 'sooth end' drinking den. I came out into the cold night, without having visited the pissery. Well the need was great, so I started to relieve the strain against the back of a plain, white Ford escort in the car park... A chequered cap leaned out the window, and told me, very politely, that my services were not required, because they had washed the car that afternoon.. As Fjool said, there is no need, or desire for this thread to either bash the police, or belittle them,But, there must be some great stories out there. Perhaps the local police officers themselves will be able to tell some of the funniest ones.
spencey7
Good stuff... Maybe "amusing police encounters" would be a more appropriate approach to this thread?

What would you rather have Drunks driving around in cars killing people cos the police are to afraid to stop to check or the inconvenience of getting home 5 or 10 minutes later? If the police stop 100 cars and only catch one drunk driver then in my opinion it is worth their efforts.

I know there are some of the opinion that sometimes newcomers take the job a little too seriously, although NOT - I hasten to add - when it comes to drink driving. Let's keep this light-hearted. Please!
drewloe
[mod]^ entire previous post quote removed for tidyness^[/mod] I don't want to get into a debate either but if your pulling me up about my reply then you should also pull sudden stop up over his last comment Gee whiz, perhaps I should have had someone walking in front of me waving a flag and ringing a bell. this was not part of his story or light hearted but a dig at a police officer who was only doing his job
Njugle
@drewloeSorry drewloe, this thread wasn't intended to inspire such debate - See my original post: Surely? If either of you would like to further debate that particular issue you could use the private message function? Thanks. Any serious stuff, and we'll just have to merge this thread with the aforementioned serious one. I can understand what you were after spencey and it could be light-hearted and whimsical record if allowed to be, but does sail close to the wind for those sensitive to any fun-poking at the boys in blue.. Shoogler
Got stopped in da toon earlier this year with a rear brake light out. They followed me all the way to my place of work before asking me to join them in the cop car - so this is now right in full view for all staff and collegues to see! I then went thruogh a full vehicle check, resulting in a bald tyre being added to the list. However, the best bits were that a 'new recruit' was going through what appeared to be his first ever run through the procedure and to all intents and purposes I felt it was 'caution by numbers'. I was feeling a bit brave so observed that they should perhaps be out chasing the real criminals, such as 'the gang that were flooding the isle with counterveit £20 notes fae da Bank of Northmavine'. Expecting a more serious reply I was surprised to hear that this was a case that this particular officer was dealing with and he was very much seeing the lighthearted side of it.
