I have allways despised the French after the misfortune of having to go there twice. They really were at the bottom of my list of countries. But i have to say Sarkozy has made me try to rethink my ideas, I like what hes saying, http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7315649.stm

Am i wrong? are they as spiteful, up themselves, untrustfull, jumped up greasey unwashed garlic munchers as i mind them?

Having been to France many times I can honestly say that the vast majority of the French People I met were polite and, where needed, helpful. Yes there are exceptions as there are in any nation but there are some very trying British people who go to France. One individual comes to mind. A passenger on a coach which had stopped at a very pleasant motorway service area not far from the Mediterranean coast getting irate because the staff did not speak English and even worse would not take English money.

I find if they pretend they dont understand just shout, works wonders.

Yes I have seen Brits doing that as well but considering we are among the worst in Europe for welcoming visitors in their own language I find that sort of action objectionable.

Stayed in one charming little hotel in France and the owner spoke Italian, Spanish and some German as well as French but between my few words of French, my phrase book and his menu translator we managed just fine without shouting which is as it should be.

I don't think I'm quite ready to accept the French as having joined the rest of the human race yet, any nation that proudly inflicted upon the world that aberration of engineering and a danger to eyesight that was the Citroen 2CV, should spend at least a century as persona non gratia after the last example has finally degenerated in to so much rust.

^^ The 2CV itself never did any harm....it was the French insisting it was supposed to be a "car", instead of admitting that it was a bad joke that have gotten completely out of hand, that was the issue.

You don't want one of them in Shetland, people have, and regretted it. You have to live with a permanent 30 degree list to one side or the other everytime you are driving across the wind, and only in July and August do we usually have little enough wind that you can stop worrying about whether the canvas roof will still exist at your journey's end.

I have always despised the French after the misfortune of having to go there twice. They really were at the bottom of my list of countries.

Always figured it depended where you went. Lived inside the IDF (greater Paris) in a Muslim area, really opened my eyes to many things. People always said avoid Paris, personally I agree wholeheartedly. The whole social tiering according to skin colour and place of birth was something I found very difficult. I suppose I found it most difficult from growing up in Shetland with no obvious class differences in everyday life.

I don't despise the french, but I wouldn't choose to travel to or holiday in France. And Sarkozy being a card carrying Blair fan does not endear me to him one bit.

I regularly chose to travel to France, just back this week in fact. I'd have to admit to being a bit of a Francophile so the following may be a llittle biased.

I've never understood the whole "we must hate the French" thing. It seems very much like one of these themes that the press like to trot out regularly to sell papers and whip up a bit of nationalism when it suits them - and the thing is, so many people buy into it.

Sure, there's been a lot of blood spilt in centuries past between the British and France empires as they set about expanding across the globe. Previous to that England was invariably at war with their nearest "foreign" neighbour but we have been allies now since the back end of the 19th century and surely it's about time to let go some of this nonsense.

They have a beautiful country, a fascinating, expressive language, a fabulous appreciation of food and socialising, fashion and art and so many more wonderful facets to their culture.

They also do lots of things differently to us. Learn about them, embrace and enjoy them or even just tolerate them. It's a whole lot nicer than hating.

 Edited after falling foul of the swear filter

Would have said I adore Poland. Or did, till the brits started using it for their stag/hen dos.

Very friendly country, great food, easy language, amazing history and old universities (older than oxford/cambridge), the shopping's not bad either.
