Ghostrider
A bit more detailed description would help. What was the weather like that night, and how's the old flare stack doing these days....not just it reflecting off the underside of a slow moving low cloud was it? Marooned in Maywick
I was being serious...some of these dudes were flying over the toon pre-procession last Up Helly Aa. Looked quite cool. http://www.nightskylanterns.co.uk/chinese-lanterns/cat_1.html Maybe or maybe not what you saw...just a suggestion. Sudden Stop
They've been getting launched from Brae recently, so it's not a giant leap to think that the wind could carry one in the Mossbank direction.

shetlandpeat
they have a wee burner at the base, solid fuel like fire lighters, you dont normally get them back, and a windless night is requires, especially if you live near houses with thatched roofs
mellow
i bet they are popular in Australia or other areas which are liable to bushfires...... the one i saw drifted safely into the clouds over Yell sound...it looked impressive and a lot bigger than it must have actually been been
