  1. Isn't lovely that the usual suspects prove the points raised. I don't always have access to a spell check, I'm not always on my own computer (which is currently in the hands of Streamline, so god knows when I'll next see it), worse still I often find myself fighting with auto spell on a phone (you physically type in one word letter by letter and the phone in it's infinite wisdom will change it for me usually to something completely different). Being of a certain age, educated in Walls then Aith I was never taught Grammar as it was decided it wasn't important. I've met (online and in person) many folks who unfortunately have given up on the Shetlink forum, they find the TROLLING to difficult to handle. What can be a great resource is underused and the classifieds are the only point of call when people visit the site. When a classified user braves the forum to warn of a scam they find themselves attacked. Twerto makes a valid point. If your only way of debating a subject is to criticise spelling and grammar, it doesn't make you look superior, just petty. I'm hoping that all makes sense, but having dyspraxia I find constructing sentences difficult. Even typing a couple of lines can take an age, trying to get the right words in the right order. At least after all the hassle I got at school for being too bright to be so stupid, I know to just be proud that I got it typed out at all, and sausage anyone petty enough to criticise my spelling or grammar.
  2. Would you feel the same about a clergyman who didn't feel "comfortable" marrying a black or disabled couple? It took a long time for those to become acceptable, though think you'll find mixed race couples found it harder than black couples to get wed. There have always been temples out there willing to do blessings, even before "civil partnership" but you wouldn't expect a Jewish couple to get married in the local Mormon Meeting house.
  3. When I was a teen, it was still illegal for men to kiss in public. Two consenting males couldn't have sexual relations until they were both over 21. We couldn't have discussions about homosexuality in class at school. Homosexuality was seen as "dirty" to the extent that victims of rape found themselves in danger of prosecution themselves. Females had an easier time regarding the law, but no easier time out in public. As the laws have changed so have peoples perceptions. Homosexuality isn't something new & it happens throughout the animal kingdom. Now that we aren't expected to procreate to fill fields, mines, boats, armies and factories what's the point in keeping the laws that still revile homosexuality?
  4. Civil Partnership isn't Marriage, the fact that the name is different kind of highlights the fact. It should be 1 rule for all. Not suggesting forcing Clergy to "Wed" couples if they don't feel comfortable. Society changes slowly, but each step in the right direction through the law, helps acceptance, and reduces homophobia. Just look at how things have changed here in Shetland in the last 20years.
  5. I sort of agree with the above post. Marriage seems to mean so little these days, other than having a big party. You can't promise to make a lifetime commitment 3 times. But if REAL lifetime partners want to make a commitment what should their gender have to do with it?
  6. You'll be glad to know it's streamline.... you could try the "local" TNT office Aberdeen (linked to TNT Aberdeen Terminal) TNT UK Ltd Unit 7 & 8 Forties Centre Haress Circle Altens Industrial Estate Aberdeen AB12 3LY Opening hours : 08.00 - 17.00 Tel : 01224 875665
  7. I love WDA parcels. Item ordered 7pm Friday, arrived 11am this morning. Item arrived in one piece. No damage to packaging. Did I mention I'm in Walls? No misplacing it for weeks on end.
  8. Last time I gave someone hassle for phoning from Microsoft support, they actually were, ended up having to apologise and try and explain
  9. Just been looking through my case for a repair, apparently the receipt I got from Streamline is wrong (dated the 9th) they apparently picked up my unit on the 15th, this I assume was made up to explain why it took 8days to reach the Mainland, sorry according to streamline 2days. So my unit is being returned through UPS again, when Northwards had the contract it was 3days each way, anyone got any experience of how long they take to get the packages back again? Do I expect them to be as slow getting it back to me?
  10. One born every minute. Personally I think it's nice that someone who might have been embarrassed to have found themselves caught out, were kind enough to warn others. Of course nothing similar would ever happen to you Posiedon, or at least you'd be less likely to admit it
  11. Well, with just about everything being Lerwick orientated, there can't be much else to do.. As stated before it's a national thing. But described as a "blip" when pointed out to the peeps doing the blueprint, but that "blip" seems tae be lasting quite a while.

    Recipes

if you're partial to a good curry try one of the spice recipe cards that you can get in places like scoop idoit proof instructions (my daughter and her friends can do them) and if you keep the card and like the curry you can buy the spices and "do it yourself" next time. none of the worry of the additives of a shop bought sauce or take away. It makes the house smell amazing too.
  13. as for the disposal of school buildings the laws have changed, and it's not as easy as it used to be. So every school building closed will still have to be mantained. There is also the fact that Shetland is the same as the rest of the country and the birth rate is going up (something about less money so folks are spending more time at home)
  14. As you ken this is only recently the case, they couldn't even support a shop when I was at school there, the factory was long gone and apart from the school and the lifeboat there was sausage all there. Not being a driver I'm unable to use the EMPTY facilities put there for the use of the folks of the westside. Doubling it still does not make that road any less lethal, the worst bit has been doubled for many years. just try driving up there with a bit of snow or ice
  15. there's always the "annual return" ie staff lists per school for each year http://www.shetland.gov.uk/education/AnnualReturn.asp
  16. Paul had you not noticed they squeezed the waas kids into 2 classrooms in preperation for the closure of Sandness. there has been a plan to build a new class room on to the school on the cards for a long time, it just kept on getting pushed to the back of the queue. Sometimes a little local knowledge would be an advantage. although Waas has playgrounds (unlike Eid Primary dept) it would be quite a hike from the ONLY door to anywhere suitable to put a portacabin. Personally I still can't figure why on earth they built the junoir high in Eid in the 1st place. it's no where near central to the Westside, it's not on a main transport link, never had a real public transport link and that road (no matter how much they widen it) is dangerous. I also still can't figure why at no point has the option of CLOSING WAAS hasn't been concidered. If children from Midwaas area were then zoned to Sandness, Waas & Wastburrafirth tae Eid and Gruting tae Skeld. Nursery provision being in Eid.
  17. Been suggested lots but strangely enough Lerwiegens aren't too happy with the idea. Something about traveling and loss to businesses.
  18. But during that joke of a "consultation" the Blueprint thingy, they refused to answer questions about hosteling costs as "they are covered by the Scottish Government" and therefore weren't allowed to be concidered when discussing "savings". Transport costs were also not to be concidered as they were not from the Education Budget. My personal opinions reguarding the closures I know are not popular so I wont bring them in to the discussion. But one thing that does concern me, is the excessive commute. Children who commute for an hour or more are put at an educational disadvantage. Even a ten minute car journey has marked influence on the ability of a brain to function in earlier lessons. (I'm afraid I canna be ersed tae find the studies tae quote). This also applies to the ability of the brain to study after a long journey home. Some children already find themselves traveling for over an hour by 3 seperate buses with sometimes quite a cold and lengthy wait inbetween.
  19. Pretty much all punishments given to children when applied to adults could be considered illegal. Grounding could be considered false imprisonment. Removal of favourite toys - theft. The list goes on.
  20. No got any photos of the ring round the moon? been seeing some beauties on FB. Have fun in the snow...
  21. Anyone who asks me to fix something I've never used on a computer. I DON'T DO COMPUTERS. Sure I can do the basics after 30odd years who can't. but if I've never used a bit of alien software before I CAN'T FIX IT. rant over...
  22. - only if you don't mind alarming amounts of sugar in your "Curry sauces"Personally I prefer the Raba for sitting in and good for veggies, Samile is best for take out.
  23. Never had to use a life raft on a plane, true my baggage has arrived before me when flying (funny stories, but someone was wating with it when I arrived both times), I've never arrived in the wrong place by plane, or had to watch as the city I was due to arrive in goes past. When my flights been delayed/canceled I've never had to find my own accomadation or pay extra for my seat (that I'd already paid for) on the flight that does go. Best of all when flights have been delayed beyond public transport times I've had transport laid on taking me to city/town centre.
  24. I use the aura watch app on my phone, but to get alerts now you have to pay for the premium app. I usually wait for Kp4.3 before I even look. Shetland wildlife on FB is worth a "like" if there's something worth seeing they're usually the 1st to stick it up. Just look at the Orca chaos in Sandwick that sunday, you could spot those with smart phones.
  25. beautiful walk home this morning lit by the Northern lights & "shooting stars" (6am)
