  1. I believe that the OAFA are going to try to establish an Orkney side in the Highland league set up at some point in the near future. Well that is their aim in the long run.
  2. Shetland don't have a divine right to beat Orkney year after year, so credit where credit's due to the Orcadians on their win. And to come from behind showed good composure also. Orkney are definitely on the up as regards football, beating Caithness in the Archer shield earlier this year showed that....then their's their future entry into Highland league football to consider which can only improve their standard further. Totally agree with the above comments, perhaps this result will stop Shetland living off the 2005 gold win. First rule in football pick the players on form....
  3. Anytime you get cash back from behind a bar is a rare thing indeed and would need to be celebrated with a drink i say...
  4. All i was saying was its funny how in recent times there have been warships from Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, even Sweden of sorts come into Lerwick but nothing from our own navy..someone said the last destroyer in Lerwick was HMS Exeter a good few years back and that was just a quick in and out to refuel! I'm not asking the Royal Navy to set up home here, but just a once in a blue moon visit to our island would be nice..
  5. See today in Lerwick another visit from a "proper" naval vessel from a foreign navy, yet you never see the Royal Navy frigates/destroyers in here for dust, why do you think that is? I'm talking about frigates/destroyers etc, not the coastal patrol vessels you do see in Lerwick from time to time like HMS Archer, or HMS Mersey when she was here for the tall ships...it's as if other countries value a "courtesy call" to our islands more than our own!
  6. Mareel is here, and despite it being possibly a major drain on resources for evermore were stuck with it. So i guess the proof is in the pudding, if it can deliver a diverse, multi functional, & popular alternative to the dross that passes for "entertainment facilites" on this island then it will be worthwhile...if not it shall be destined for more council offices or even better a lap dancing venue in the future, perhaps a certain ex councillor will have a lasting legacy afterall... [/i]
  7. Tidal?, Possibly but i would have thought going to Akureyri it would be shorter (although not by much) to go the Northern route (ie around the top of Unst). Guess it's up to the individual master to decide, incidentally Phoenix Reisen who operate the Amadea are not in Lerwick in 2013, but i guess there's always 2014...
  8. Had heard fae somebody that it may be possible to get a half hour consultation or something like that, however CAB it will be. Thanks for the replies.
  9. Apart from the citizen's advice does any of Shetland's solicitors do any form of free legal advice?
  10. Seen divers the last two days working on the passenger ferries while going past the ferry terminal, i take it Serco are checking them out to make sure the outgoing Northlink company haven't allegedly sabotaged them!
  11. If it is not properly charted how come foreign cruise liners up to 42,000grt have transited the sound in recent years? And for that matter how are liners even going through there even this year, even after concordia? I'm confused!
  12. Changed days from when that picture was taken, god the ferries don't even go through Mousa sound any more, (why?) left to the cruise liners only to enjoy, shame that as i loved sliding past da broch on a bonny night.... As predicted no P&O flags were seen around..unless anyone knows differently?
  13. The Shetland Times has the same topics, at the same time each and every year, but if you live on a small island with a limited amount of "news" to report on what can you do? Make it up? Personally i read the web news through the week, and you won't be surprised to find it's the same reports (word perfect) that land in the paper come Friday. I still buy the times but do feel i'm reading second or even third hand news, so there must be others that think why buy it if i have already read most of the "headline" stories online already. Which leads nicely into just why so many publications are struggling to compete and survive against the web...no change of editor can address that particular problem.
  14. Ghostrider:- I can't even myself remember if anything was done in 1987, but given P&O were on the North run surely they must have done something?? Anyone know for sure? Regardless whether or not it was marked in 87 it should be marked locally next week, but don't you get the feeling it won't? Kavi:- I wholeheartedly agree with you in regard to what has happened at the museum at Gremista, absolute disgrace how it has been crushed by the toff mob on this island. The custodian who has put so much of his own time and effort into the place frankly deserves far better than what he has received back.
  15. July 3rd sees the 175th anniversary of the founding of P&0 lines. To mark this all 7 liners in the current P&O fleet will be meeting in Southampton on this date. Founded by Brodie McGhie Wilcox and Arthur Anderson in 1837 this company from humble beginnings became a major power on the maritime scene. Since Arthur Anderson was a native Shetlander i hope there is something planned locally to celebrate this milestone, at the very least the P&O flag should be flown from the town hall for the day or at the Bod at Gremista..any thoughts on this?
  16. Like the morning years ago when in the middle of reading the news his pet cat walked over all the buttons and it caused mayhem (or so that was his excuse!)
  17. You could tell when it wis a slow news week in da times as da pictures got a whole lot bigger...
  18. Seems like it's full ahead for this project http://www.constructionenquirer.com/2012/06/18/lerwick-port-to-spend-45m-on-new-quay-and-site-huts/
  19. I'm not expecting every shop to hurl their doors wide open but at least something could have opened up or at least something could have been laid on for those that did venture ashore. Shetland should sell itself at every possible opportunity, not when it feels like it, you have to think outside the box sometimes in this life. The "can try" rather than the "can't be a*sed" attitude should be the order of the day. As i have mentioned before the cruise industry works off positive feedback from passengers, if this island does not even try just once in a blue moon to be flexible Lerwick, and Shetland as a whole will be left behind make no mistake about it.
  20. Note the Rotterdam at anchor off the Knab this evening staying overnight until sailing tomorrow for Faroe at 5. It was known that she was coming in around 5pm for a good few days yet not one bright spark thought it might be nice to open at least something for the passengers who took the bother to land in the town this evening, their only option is a walk around the Knab and wander through the cemetery! When will this town ever learn...it's no wonder some cruise lines never bother to call here or stop altogether.
  21. Orcadians seem to be making a good turnout in Broad Street this morning awaiting the arrival around 9am... http://www.visitorkney.com/webcams.asp
  22. Arriving fae Orkney on a Saab at lunchtime, but knowing Sumburgh it will most likely get confiscated upon it's departure by the security search mob as they confiscate most things anyway!
  23. No sign of any "savings" if my look through the doors of the new white house at the north ness is anything to go by....the finest of furnishings adorn that particular building, some of which would not be out of place in the Ritz hotel...and has anybody else heard a whisper in relation to alleged expensive taps?
  24. Whatever spin Serco churn out it appears to me to be a cut in freight capacity. So they say the 2nd freight vessel will be used if the demand is there when it's not meant to be on the North run, that's ok we'll await it's arrival from god knows where to save us whether it's in the Irish Sea, Baltic or somewhere else! In my eyes it's penny pinching, a second rate service surely awaits us...
  25. Whilst glad that Streamline did not get their way in court i feel after reading what Serco's plans are that they have missed a great opportunity to get shot of the whole club lounge concept, which even today is an under used waste of space area on board that could be put to far better use. This almost class division plan (budget/standard/premium) is in my opinion a waste of time. Also not keen on the fare system where say you may be required to so south at a moments notice for say a sick relation, or even a funeral you will be whacked with a heavy fare...that's just not right in my view. Even the freight side of things are suspect too.. A tad worrying and i have to say i have a bad feeling about this...
