  1. I'm of a slightly different opinion. I don't think it's the alcohol that makes the difference - I think it's the human connection. People going out and socialising and feeling part of something instead of feeling alone at home.
  2. I gave up because it was impossible to answer questions accurately. How many times I use the boat varies a lot. How many people varies a lot. How much I spend... Well you get the idea. If they asked how many times in the last year I could have answered. And with no flexible answer option I thought it better to not answer than give inaccurate figures.
  3. It's interesting how people always compare the cost of journeys to and from Shetland with the cost of journeys elsewhere, but take no other factors into account. Journeys to and from Shetland are niche. We don't have a large population and although tourism is important, relative to the rest of the UK the market is very small. If I compared the cost of a taxi to the cost of a bus and made the observation that the taxi driver was making a lot of money from us, the implication being that I was being overcharged, people would rightly tell me that it's different because the bus holds more people and so can charge less per passenger. But when it comes to travel to Shetland (whether by ferry or by plane) nobody seems to consider the economy of scale that other routes can take advantage of.
  4. Quoted text:"If that is the case, why is there no backup ferry between Lerwick and Scalloway for when they are painting lines on the road at the brig o fitch?" Because there are two other 'fixed' ways of going between Lerwick and Scalloway... Because there is no need for a ferrry link that would take forever when there are perfectly good roads... What an odd idea
  5. Was very impressed by the new menu at the Brae Hotel - reasonable price, good serving size (as in satisfied but not stuffed) and very tasty food. With a look.
  6. I think what you had is officially known as "brown cake". How depressing. It looks like chocolate and it just isn't. Sadly, many women think that adding more chocolate to something makes it faste better. Chocolate is generally the bit I cut off and throw away. Oh god, I am NOT suggesting they add more of that god-awful fake stuff that they use. No way. Any of that is WAY too much.
  7. If imagine that Brittany ferries also use a much bigger ship with a much larger capacity, and therefore the running cost (or overhead) per customer would be much less.
  8. Whalsa, if a political or quasi-political organisation can't cope with members not agreeing with every policy, then it's long term viability doesn't look good. You will have a very limited pool of people that would be 'eligible'. If that's the case then 'Wir' Shetland really needs to include a tick box membership eligibility checker with every form, so people don't waste their time and presumably money on an organisation that doesn't want them. Personally I would have thought that an organisation with the specific aim of Shetland having a greater say in its own affairs would want to maximise the number of members with that aim. But no - you have to be anti-SNP and anti-some education policy that I don't know much about and who knows what else. I suspect very few political movements and parties would survive if people had to agree on every policy. How were these policy decisions made? By the committee perhaps?
  9. I won't be attending the roadshow as I won't be in Shetland. Any other dates planned at any other locations?

It really depends on what you mean by'best'. Best food? Best price? Best value?
  11. Ghostrider, if you think that a question that relates to how a decision that affects the entire membership should not be asked in front of aforementioned membership, then it sounds like you are part of an organisation that does not value transparency. She was asking how it was decided. She wasn't 'calling out' an individual. Unless said individual made the decision, I'm not sure how it can be seen that way. Clearly we disagree on this. I've said all I have to say on the matter. Whalsa, I hear you. Your arguments are certainly more compelling than much I have seen come out of the wir Shetland camp. Sadly, however, there you are outnumbered by a vocal few that I have seen post on public platforms that I would in no way wish to be associated with on any level.
  12. How and where? As you said. In private correspondence. Although it is unlikely that in a group of this sort, every individual is on board with every policy that the group has. To otherwise is naiive at best.
  13. Ms Westlake asked a question that was refusing to the running of the group that she was a member of, in an appropriate forum. It was not a personal question about any individual, it was a question about policy. Mr Tulloch asked a question that regard to Ms Westlake as an individual. Mr Tulloch thinks he was justified in doing so. In my opinion he is wrong on that. referring to. Doh!
  14. Colin, they do. It's included in the cost of your purchase.
  15. I thought Wir Shetland was an interesting idea. Thought I'd hold off for a bit to see how things panned out. It seems from recent media that the chair only wants people involved that agree with him on every issue (otherwise why was he calling out Ms Westlake on her thoughts on education which was otherwise irrelevant to the discussion) and has no interest in 'risking' (my choice of word) a membership vote on something as important as who to support in the upcoming election. A true 'multi-party' group wouldn't be so quick to alienate the second largest group of voters on the island. Mr Tulloch seems to have delusions of importance, where his views trump the views of others. He does seem to have a few committed supporters, but he also seems to have a few that are very unhappy with the way things have been played out. Personally I think the only way forward for the group's survival is to elect a new, more open, chair. One that might encourage people to join, rather than leave, the group.
  16. In Scotland, only paper bags that are less that 17.5 x 26cm are exempt. They are not charging under false pretences. The law is different in England I believe. As for Da Kitchen Bakery - there might be good products there but the one thing I tried had fake chocolate rather than the real stuff, it reminded me of Scotbloc. They called it chocolate on the ingredients list, but it definitely wasn't. Put me off. I'd rather pay more and have decent ingredients.
  17. There are positives about marriage. They involve pensions and inheritance mainly.
  18. Zorbing. I've always fancied trying that. And maybe a marks and spencers food hall?
  19. Hi, I hope it's okay to post this on here. I am not involved in the running of the course in any way. Angelic Reiki Practitioner Levels 1 & 2 Course will be held in Shetland on Friday 30 August 6.30 - 9.30 pm, Saturday 31 August 10 am - 5 pm and Sunday 1 September 10 am - 5 pm. For more information, contact mobile number is 07790 264 336 or email kate@sweetgrass.co.uk. Early requests for information are important as there are only six places in total, and two have already gone with limited advertising.

What subsidies does Hays Dock cafe restaurant get?

    museum

That's the museum staff, not the restaurant staff. The restaurant has, I believe, two full time members of staff and several part time/casual staff that work hours as and when needed.
  22. Went to Flames for a curry this weekend. My sauce was curdled and it was the first time in my life that I bought a curry, and needed to add salt in order to get some flavour. It also took three times as long as they said it would, so I didn't have time to complain about it.
  23. Northlink occasionally advertise a friends and family discount, where you can nominate people on the mainland to get a discount for a limited time - bit the ferry service will soon be taken over by serco, so I dont suppose anyone really knows if that will continue.
  24. Muppet may well be right, but 'sponsors' isn't terribly specific. Some more information from the organisers would be good!
  25. The same info is available on the sic website http://www.shetland.gov.uk/Olympics240512.asp
