You'd be surprised at how much futher ahead a lot of European countries are in terms of people being able to speak languages at a young age. My Swedish girlfriend is entirely fluent in English and she also learned French at school. I wish there was more pressure on youngsters to learn languages at school which are useful - I learned German and it's only really useful in Germany. Spanish or French is the way forward. The fact that huge swathes of the world speak English isn't necessarily the best thing from our point of view. ive tried to encourage mines to learn european or scandinavian languages so they can get a skill n escape this A-hole country

from my own perspective , my bairns have grown up in a narrow street with cars parked tightly on both sides in a not so good area in edinburgh, the neds often roring up n down the street at speeds which are over 40mph, but they have been brought up with wise enough heads thankfully, even within 100 meters theres a busy dual carriageway/main route to cross getting to that foul mcdonalds which they attend way too much, and outside thier old school theres a "rat run". All 3 will have had close calls am sure but i do sincerely believe well brought up sensible bairns have less to fear , but of course its not just the bairns , its the spoilt bairns that grow into obnoxious drivers

all i know is that when i was at primary school it was the hieght of the construction at sullom voe n we were in the thick of it, no enforced speed limit n trucks n busses goin all out on poorer roads n less street lights wi no verges, we walked home along the main road n often cycled, no refective coats, no helmets , no enforced speed limits, no fatalities, but by god we were left under no illusion that the cars would kill you if you were in front of them
