TeeAyBee
Its the lifeboat crew you have to admire, they do a fantastic job in good weather, and a truley unbelievable job in really bad weather, I've been to sea in really really bad weather but I wouldnt have the courage to go to sea in a small boat like a lifeboat, well done those guy's. If only everyone had the same level of respect for the RNLI! I'm in absolute agreement with you here, the RNLI crews country wide are marvellous. If I had to choose but one charity to support they'd be it. Also let's not forget the sterling work of the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and Coastguard who fly in the worst of weathers to aid those in trouble at sea. TeeAyBee
"Shetland's weather is extremely windy and unpredictable. Whenever it is windy, whatever forecast may or may not have been issued, just assume that it may become windy enough to kill you." That could be an adequate forecast for any day up here! Sudden Stop
Met office forecast Supposed to be a bit breezy tommorow. 63mph mean winds gusting to lord knows what. Yet this doesn't warrant a severe weather warning for some reason?
PJ of Hildisvik
The met office's temps and wind forecasts for Shetland, can be all over the place.63mph constant wind speed, with gusts in excess, is at the top end of storm force 10, inducing average wave height of 30ft, if this was forecast anywhere on mainland UK, the Alarm bells would be ringing!! Sudden Stop
^^^ Exactly. Yet those who keep an eye on the forecast produced by the met office will know that it's quite common for them to forecast armageddon only to water it down significantly 12 hours before it due to arrive. I wonder what we will actually get?
Pooks
Looks like the worst of it will be tomorrow morning before dying off again. http://theyr.tv/m/EU0/maps/NS/NS.w.08112600.33.gif

Pooks
I'd say they aren't Windy through the night into the morning with very little wind during Saturday. It should have passed through by then.

Pooks
Wind and sea state are two different things. The wind out to the East of Shetland could also still be pretty bad even though things might have calmed down on land.

Frances144
I hope the Edinburgh flight gets in tonight. My kids are on it. Fingers crossed. The SIC Roads Weather Stations are saying that Sumburgh is 20mph lower than everywhere else in the islands, so I am praying they come home safely. Editted to say they've landed safely. Oh, the relief!
JAStewart
The weather down here in Aberdeen is utterly terrible. Windy, rainy, cold. Awful.
