Claudias
Has anyone tried Flock? It is Firefox with a pretty face. It is my browser of choice at the moment.
trout
Has anyone been sampling the Flock browser? Goto www.flock.com and d/l it! It's now on beta 0.7.4 and is based on the Firefox Gecko engine. It's extremely good if you're into social networking and has some great little built in tools to network between sites / RSS news feeds etc. I've just upgraded to the latest release and begun having a "hock" with it again ... and am only really now appreciating it for what it is! Oh .. its for Windows only
BigMouth
So why does it say Beta 1 v0.7 for Mac OSX then I always thought you were good at computery stuff Trout !!

JAStewart
Is it as mind-numbingly slow as Direfox?
trout
I'm not convinced that Firefox is as slow as many "perceive" it to be. You see all these graphs and charts, many of which are from Microsoft affiliate speed tests! .. same way as they try and debunk Linux ... which don't mean much at all ... Check out: http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/browserSpeed.html for an independant viewpoint. Yes, Firefox takes a while to load up from a cold start on a Windows box, but Internet Explorer has a head start on every application as its loaded as part of the operating system. Check out your Windows desktop - thats actually running from the same rendering engine which IS Explorer that is loaded on startup!! To increase the speed of Firefox rendering type: about:config in the address bar and press [enter] Then alter the following to: browser.xul.error_pages.enabled = true network.dns.disableIPv6 = true network.http.max-connections 48 network.http.max-connections-per-server 24 network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy 12 network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server 6 network.http.pipelining = true network.http.pipelining.maxrequests 32 Now thats some config file that you have FULL control over ... you don't get that in many browsers!! McFly
Interesting tests trout. Apart from cold start times, the differences between most of the browsers is in the order of a couple of tenths of a second, which, to be completely honest, aint gonna make any difference to my life. As the guy says, the real differences are in compliance and security. And these are exactly the factors that make me go for Firefox, along with the user configurability. Oh, and it's not made by Microshaft.......and it's free
BigMouth
Even though I have just upgraded to Tiger I have stuck with Camino as a browser. Occasionally you get a site that doesn't display something the way it should. Craghoppers was one. I wanted to order something so I let them know that drop down boxes with the sizes wasn't working for my browser. A couple of weeks later I happened to wander past when they were having a sale and bingo they had fixed it. Camino is designed for Mac not a browser that was written for another OS and ported to Mac. http://www.caminobrowser.org !5 meg download. JAStewart
Safari is tolerable I've found. But i've only used it on a Mac.
BigMouth
Safari is tolerable I've found. But i've only used it on a Mac. I went with Camino because Safari didn't (then) have tabbed browsing. I have just stuck with it since.
trout
Safari is tolerable I've found. But i've only used it on a Mac. Safari is only available on the Mac. It's rendering engine is based on the Linux KDE Konqueror KHTML engine - though I've recently found it bears little resemblance to this and it's output is very different! There is a development project underway called Swift that is still in its Alpha infancy to bring the "Safari KHTML Engine" over onto the Windows platform. It's had decent reviews so far .. but is now unavailable unless you can find an old magazine coverdisk with a version on it?!? http://www.getswift.org/
peeriebryan
I've just discovered a cracking extension for Firefox. It's called gSpace, and it allows you to use a Google Gmail email account* as an online hard drive. https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1593/ In effect, you get about 3GB of online storage for free, and if you set up multiple Gmail accounts, you can have as much free storage as you want!!! I set up three accounts just to use gSpace, so I've got 10GB of online storage for nowt! (there are free standalone programs that do a similair job, but I think this one is the Mutts Knuts as its built into Firefox) The interface is like a basic FTP program, so its very simple to use. All you have to do is enter your gmail name and password and you're off. gSpace sends and recieves files by manipulating how Gmail handles file attatchments. The only drawback I can think of is the 10MB attatchment limit of Gmail, but some users report that they can send much bigger files There's some other nifty looking features I haven't tried yet, such as a music player which streams from your Gmail account and a photo viewer Get it downloaded!!! *Starting a Gmail account is by invite only, but I have a few invitations to spare, so I can send you one if you PM me your current email address
Fifi
I've just discovered a cracking extension for Firefox. It's called gSpace, and it allows you to use a Google Gmail email account* as an online hard drive.I tried something similar a while back - Gmail Drive - http://www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm but haven't used it for ages. Edit: Just had a look again and downloaded the latest version of Gmail Drive from http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/GMail-Drive-shell-extension-Download-15944.html Gmail Drive shows in windows explorer as another drive. Drag'n'drop stuff or right click a document and send to Gmail Drive. Ta, Peerie Bryan - I'd forgotten all about this. Also got gmail invites should anyone need more than Peerie Bryan's got! McFly
That looks great PB, thanks for that I've set up a couple of new gmail accounts for data.
peeriebryan
Apparently using gSpace (and similar software) breaches some of the Gmail Terms & Conditions, so they might have the ability to close the account I haven't heard of that happening to anybody, but it's probably best to avoid keeping important files up there
