Before Leaving Lithuania this summer I picked up the July issue of the monthly publication for the ÄŒili Pica (Chilli Pizza) restaurant chain as it carried the following article: BeprotiÅ¡kiausios pasaulio sventÄ—s (Craziest celebrations of the world) Ugnies festivalis “Up Helly Aaâ€, Å kotija (Fire Festival “Up Helly Aaâ€, Scotland) Å i Å¡ventÄ—, minima jau nuo 1881m., žymi KalÄ—dų savaitÄ—s pabaigÄ…. Jos metu prisimenama didinga vikingų istorija. Å kotai leidžiasi į procesijÄ… su ugnies fakelais, o Å¡ventÄ—s kulminacijos metu juos meta į 10 metrų ilgio vikingų laivo maketÄ… ir jį sudegina. Å ventÄ—s dalyvai bÅ«na pasipuoÅ¡Ä™ gana ekstravagantiÅ¡kais kostiumais. Vyrai nevengia pesirengti moterų rÅ«bais, todÄ—l Å¡is ugnies festivalis užsidirbo “Transvetitų antradieno†vardÄ…. …which roughly translates as… (the translation is my own, but it should be to a nearness) This festival, which started in 1881, celebrates the last week of Christmas. It is held in memory of the great viking history. Scottish people participate in a procession carrying flaming torches, and the celebration culminates with everbody throwing their torches into a 10 metre long viking ship which they set ablaze. People involved in the festival wear extravagant costumes. Men are not afraid to wear women’s clothes, therefore this fire festival is known as “Tranvestite Tuesdayâ€.

forgetting about your tea and having to eat it cold ...that and vending machines which dispense change into receptacles too small for fingers resulting in small change on the floor. Grrrr! -

Billister, North Nesting doesn't have any coverage. O2 works at the end of the pier (not very fine on a coorse nicht), but no other networks work without driving up to the top of Da Wart.

Somehow I have to continually correct this misrepresentation of the Shetland Trow/Trowie. There is absolutely no documented proof that the Trowies were ever related to the Trolls. Trolls being big nasty creatures from Norse mythology,, or computer geeks with too much time on their hands Trowies are more like the Norse Nisse which are generally mischievous, imp like creatures. I stand corrected yet again. Literal translation m'lud.

Hands up who thinks the new (Scottish) government policy which aims to increase the price of alcohol to 40p per unit will curb underage drinking.

North Nesting BT Broadband reads as such: http://www.speedtest.net/result/581395941.png It's been about 10 days since I signed up; so time to harangue them methinks.

IIRC, Colin Ross used to do visits to Shetland, although I don't know if he still does. Maybe worth a try.
