    Shetland Discos

You could always try the kaliedescope fae Yell. Kinda depends on your musical tastes though. They tend to pay mostly for the younger crowd although they do also do some older stuff as well. Stuart Anderson or Neil Williamson are the lads to speak to.
  2. Ta for the links but they should give themselves a slap on the hand cause its much much harder to find from scratch than previously, ok for serial shetlink types but a lot of less experienced net users will no doubt have problems. Mr Beeb I am not amused
  3. unleaded 1.21 and diesel 1.37 tonight at the Aywick shop in Yell. Mary has consistently been among if not the cheapest place for fuel in shetland, not to mention the host of other treasures there. however mary is doing what the likes of tesco do and selling the fuel at little or no mark up to attract customers, which she does, and long may it continue. The biggest problem is with the monopoly that exists in the shipping of fuel into Lerwick. If there is only one supplier there can be no competition, and also no reason for them to sell cheaper to tesco, as they can't increase sales from 100% in fact probably better for them not to deal with tesco at all. unless the supermarket wants to go into the fuel importing business then I reckon their stuffed. Best they could do would be to sell at cost which would only shave the odd penny of.
  4. Lies damned lies the good citizens of Yell are unlikely to invadew unless there are a few sheep for the taking, as Forvik don't appear to have any I doubt if the Yell boats will do much other than "go to the Eela" (or perhaps another place where the yowe roams free)
  5. Spinner made an excellent point about the support he and others received from their local public hall, it was and still is a very nurturing place for music. there is a network of around 50 halls in Shetland which could and should if at all possible do something similar. No it won't work everywhere but there should not be a problem in a significant number of halls given the right attitudes from hall committees and potential musicians. No matter how good Mareel is the soaring cost of fuel and other practical transport issues, especially for youngsters will mean that it could never really take on the role of a regular practice venue for people from the country or Isles. The two must work in collabaration and I sincerely hope the ARTS mob take this onboard and don't just "withdraw" to Mareel.
  6. Slightly of topic I know but fruit does not ripen well on windowsills. The ripening process can be accelerated by using CO2. An easy natural way to do this is to put the underripe fruit in a plastic bag with a couple of slices of say an apple or a core and leave as the apple decays(turns brown) this gives of CO2 and will ripen the other fruit in the bag. It is not instantaneous and can take a day or so dependant on how underripe the fruit is. Slightly more on topic , didn't Tesco have a shop in Shetland before where Boots is now?
  7. Old way here was to gut and take of head and put into pan "round" then bring to the boil, as soon as boiling take of heat and leave in pan with lid on until cold. They are very tasty this way, but of course cold rather than hot. Version 2 would be to split and shallow fry using the fish livers oil to cook them in also very nice and full of omega 3 or some o dat good gear. Catch more and try several methods !!
  8. Perhaps someone would like to confirm the status of the money being asked for from the development trust, is it an equity investment in effect a grant or are they looking for a return. Would they be left open to a call for additional funds if the build goes over budget? Just that they(or predessor organisations) have had difficulty in the past with "investments". From an investment point of view its a no brainer no answer, but if its taking an equity stake or giving a grant that is different, there is also the question of what other projects they may also be asked to contribute to. I suppose the Arts trust could always raise a bit of a mortgage on the place knowing fine well the council will no doubt bail them out regardless.
  9. if we boiled all yun we his liver we could mak da first trout craapin heads
  10. That is an interesting idea if they had all been there and voted as colin suggests then the projected 12 - 10 against vote almost mirrors this shetlink poll view in percentage terms. One way or another this will rumble on. I sincerely hope my fears are not recognised and there is no requirement for major bailouts of this project in years to come.
  11. Tried safari and same problem, not sure what the problem is? Those are only 2 browsers I currently have on this machine
  12. Sorry to disappoint but I feel that this project is not one I support, having read the finacial projections before the recent fuel rises I felt they wre ambitious but now I feel they are cloud cuckoo land. There are many things around Mareel which i am not happy with - some for under provision as well. However the thing that recently brought things home to me was the article in the Shetland Times regarding BBB's last gig in shetland before they were of to glasvegas to follow their dreams and ambitions. I wish them well, but it just shows that you have to move away from Shetland to make it in the music business. Shetlands investment in training has been very successful and we perhaps should concentrate on this aspect of things rather than building ivory towers. Particularly in making sure our young musicians have the neccessary business savvy and support as well as talent to cope with the hard realities of the professional music business. While I am of the opinion that the arts needs additional capacity I feel that money would be spent on refurbing/extending the Garrison and Mareel should be placed firmly into the same scrap bucket as that other white elephant the Bressay brig. However no matter what any of us think it will all be settled tomorrow, unless of course the decision is deferred
  13. Found one problem with FF3 can't pst a message to shetlink admin , just keeps telling me that there is no message when there patently is one as I have just typed it. If any of the mods are about can I ask that you remove the bastavoe regatta from the whats on as its been cancelled. I am sec/tees of the club for my sins. any questions pm me. thanks
  14. Using ff3 on the mac - very impressed with speed and no probs so far but not used it enough to give it a fair trial
  15. Move to Yell, we don't have any rats here! , if only I could figure out why I would be loaded
  16. While i don't ant to take anything away from the boys bigin da sixereen in da toon. It seems da fact dat there have been 2 built in recent years in Unst, has been forgotten or at least little mentioned. Da first een blew away we da 91 gale so they biggid annider een. She is currently ebbed up at the Boat Haven in Haroldswick. Its kinda vexin as she made a splendid sight on da water. Maybe dis rowin eens should tak on rowin right boats leek sixereens instead o yun nonsensical skeetiploops it dey wirk we enoo
  17. dir da sound service station enoo..... Yes Tesco may bring some benifits but there will be a cost, and some other businesses will close. If they make a determined effort in the non food categories then I think da street might shortly be minus a few existing names.
  18. Maybe the cooncil should give these guys a call, "on time and on budget" is what they say. Doubt that anyone else the cooncil while likely deal with would promise that. design on the page also looks rather similar to new ahs by coincidence http://www.yorkon.co.uk/sector-education.dc
  19. Fond memories of broken biscuits we butter. Can you still get bags o broken biscuits??
  20. Pronto hate to disappoint you but macs have been shipping with multibutton mice for a while now and they have supported multibutton mice for ages.Couldn't give you an exact date but its long enough ago to be irrelavent. Just that the new ones are designed to look like the old single button ones, the buttons are touch sensitive rather tha physical buutons. In fact I sometimes wish I had less buttons!!!!!!
  21. I note a couple of people have asked the question about who is paying for the AHS and perhaps also the new Midyell school. Just now the Council is going through a very comprehensive process regarding the options for Bluemull sound fixed links or ferries etc. They have to go through a mandatory process if they want the money from the Scottish exec to build new infrasructure whatever it is. The costs there are likely to be lower than the AHS and they defietly need outside funding to do it. Why could not an options appraisal type of proposal be used to decide what we need in way of a new AHS. This type of process always brings up the what would be desireable and what is neccessary. As usual the council have gone for a very costly option, the fact that the architects are probably as usual on a percentage of costs of course has nothing to do with it. If the council do want to make savings in the education budget then all aspects of education should be looked at including the cost of new buildings. If we didn't have the oil reserves we would have to find another route for this statutory provision. It would in my opinion be better to keep the oil reserves to be used for non statutory provision and thus a bit more restraint would hopefully be shown when ordering up new schools and the like.
  22. Rasmie perhaps du is tinkin o honey spot or stammerin
  23. If you take the time to read the article, the "trojan" is only found on porn sites currently and asks for permission effectively before it can be installed. Hardly a serious risk. Not compared with the real trojans which invite themselves without being asked onto the offerings of big bad bill, nt to mention the scores of other spy and malware out there. No computer user should think they are immune however the risks to a Mac are effectively zero while the risks to a Windows user are relatively high in comparison. Just a thought are there any viruses for the speecy canna mind if there were.
  24. He was recently on breakfast telly gmtv if I remember rightly and it was kinda scary seeing the slimmed down version. He looked about 20 years younger ! Still a big lad tho
  25. While I have no problem with the pricipal of an additional arts venue as I am aware of how heavily the Garrison is used. I do have some difficulties with the current design and scope of Mareel I feel its a more than we need. We also need to consider the large number of halls throughout Shetland which are not used to anything like there full capacity. Someone else mentioned about accoustics and that Burra had sorted it by use of accoustic panels. Well Midyell which used to be terrible has now also significantly improved because of similar modifications, these buildings with modest improvemnt could provide extra capacity at little cost and would also more people to access performances without having neccessarily to travel to Lerwick. The other major difficulty I have is with the lack of any credible estimates of running cost deficits. That the council agreed to fund open ended losses by Mareel is crazy, especially now when core services are being cut. The use of Mareel for education while a good idea is unlikly to provide the facility with much in the way of funding, although I would be happy to be proved wrong on this point.
