  1. Ooop. Forgot about marshals.....I think they have to have dome degree of training..
  2. oops gone too far perhaps, sorry folks, may be a wee bit to passionate. With this ring............... edit, I have altered my posts. I did not think that I was involved in a spat until noted by others.. again sorry...I was wrong to continue this, in this vein....
  3. I ride a bike to work, I also install temporary traffic control measures. I also know there are folk who ride bikes who stick to the rules, but as with folk who speed, there are many cyclists who push their, and others luck in their quest for fitness. The reason I install these measures is to allow a work force to work safely on the highways. They should not have to look out for folk who think they are above the law. And yes motorists to drive far too fast and close... Personally I think bikes should be registered, there are many folk who have fallen foul of a cyclist and not receive any recompense for injury..the cyclist should have insurance..even more so if in a time trial team travelling at upto 40 mph, racing and time trials are ileagal on UK highways, except when the road is closed and even then. the speed limit is not broken...
  4. The parks here are generaly vacant, but at weekends they come alive... The city council have spent a fair bit of cash on the availability of our city spaces and have invited all, it sees to have worked. Sadly you will get some one who will try to spoil others enjoyment, but most of the time it is good.
  5. It is complecated and long, one action will have a knock on to another, soon we could be all tied up in knots, trying to carry favour with the folk who shout the loudest. As the reports said, there has to be an investigation and bein folk think that the original trial may not be fair then a ruling by folk who are our peers to decide is the required action, not for a lynch mob to We do not know the full story, but we know that some one is not going to die because a momentry lapse of reason (time compared to a life time) and may become a beacon for things to change for the good.
  6. GJ Fjool (Very) EARLY (had to start at 6am at work)
  7. I dont think it is right to mutilate or murder folk cos they may be stuped, or a better way, not as quick thinking. But again, if offered the choice of get pregnant or get dead, there really is 1 obvious answer. There also may be mental health issues, does that mean the murder and mutilation of an 18 year old with ADHT? For instance... Tis a bit clinical, perhaps you should allow other folks to beat children if they do wrong. In you society of an eye for an eye, should it not be best to teach them early, so they det a chance to be more devious or take greater risks. There are hundreds, if not thousands of murders in USA, and they have the death sentance in places...some deterent that is.. And if she did do it under duress, and owned up at the airport, do you think she would have been treated any differently.. I do hope this thread doeas not turn into anothe witch hunt, I do hope we are mature enough to see the bigger picture.
  8. Imagine how much tax cash that it may produce, will folk try to advoid the tax or will they be too laid back to care??
  9. I could be a long process, could the land owners not give up the 2 metres required, or tape off enough and provide access and egress points so folk can walk within the boundaries. Perhaps a corridor. Could be built by motorists who go to court, as a punnishment, or any other organised party. The council will find the cash to support that perhaps but not to buy strips of land, you will always get the greedy ones... The district council would probably be able to organise this better...
  10. because we do not judge where the water will hit 1st, and the spoon being concave, like a satelite dish will try to focus the water, but hits the tap water and fires back. summint like that
  11. Fixed that for ya, MiM. Now it makes sense..!! # fixed that for ya dB
  12. Tis how the postings went, but I have never been intimidated by kids playng on the Knab, so neither the play park, ha, you should see some of the 5 yearolds around here, they can be quite intimidating, more for the fact they are backed up by their agressive parent(s).
  13. Maybe something we have to watch, see how it develops... I bet no one has an alternative suggestion.... But, maybe too late now...
  14. Perhaps to get a fairer balance of male and female MP/MSP' s, and reduce the establishments strangle hold on women promoting themselves, and to remove the old boys club mentality.... A magnificent question.... We all pay her wages as she was voted for by her constituancy, we had little choice. And, did you not elect these folk?? (what small birds have to do with it I dont know?) There does seem to be alot of anti woman stuff on these forums recently, and sexual references towards their anatomy. A little retarded with our thinking perhaps....
  15. With reference to the earlier thread posted in this section. http://www.shetlink.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8657 To say that she should rot and only became pregnant to advoid the death sentance may be wrong... The courts in Laos are not known for their sympathy..we do not know why this woman had drugs on her and what pressure she was under to do such a task, her family could have been under threat...so, untill the British authorities sort this out, we have no cause for accusations, only have cause to comment on what is the truth as we know it. Oh, right, we are going to kill you, but if you become pregnant we wont, if that was the choice offerd to you, what choice would you make, if you were a woman. And that offer may have come from a prison guard....!!!! That is abuse and rape...if it did come from a prison guard... Sadly, in other countries women have fewer rights and are seriously abused and thought of as 2nd class folk, there are also some men in more developed countries who think the same. This has to stop,, there are many better women around than credit is given for, sexism is really bad and is only reserved for cavemen. Now that Orobator is back here, she and her child will be treated with a little bit more respect...although there are issues with the way British women prisoners are treated when with child. She will stand a better chance...and may receive a better future for herself and child.
  16. We have many roads similar here in Lancashire, there has also been an increase in complaints. I think the best you can do now is to report every occurence, to the police and the highways man, and petition your MP... If you walk a stretch of road frequented my many walkers then the council ar obliged to warn motorists that there will be folk on the roads and to slow down. The rest is up to you to try to keep out of the way, you may need hi vis and some sort of walkers lantern, the highway code sez walkers should have some sort of light at the darker hours. I do feel for your plight, so many wonderful sights and moments ruined due to the reckless disregard of 1 individual over many. Keep your eyes and ears open. Ah yes cyclists....the ones who think they can do what they like... Down here they arrive in packs, generally middle to late aged folk who need to prove that they are not old, spend thousands on gear to look the part and have peddles clapped to their feet. They ride through red lights, against traffic flows, ride on the pavements against pedestians and ride 3 or 4 abreast to block of roads instead of pulling over to let faster traffic past, this is highlighted again in the highway code about slower vehicles causing tail backs..But they are timing themselves and need too beat the yunguns.... They totally ignore traffic signs and have seen them jump excavations within my road space to beat the red light. The police seem to do nothing. Mmm disabled drivers can be a little problematic, tis where the kids need a little more control. But, could we not have part of the day totally traffic free, appointments could be made outside these hours for glasses and banks. There is not always a need for some badge holders to use the badge. There have been many cases now where folk have had the rights removed due to missuse, ie not having the disabled person with them when they try to fraud the parking system.. Disabled = handicapped, handicapped phrases came about efter the 1st war due to so many injured soldiers not have any work and would beg on srteets with their cap in their hand... sorry for diversion... Lerwick needs a parking warden and or someone who can enforce the limitations of various streets. A few folk need to be fined and have their details in the paper. And bring back the 4mph speed limit..... Oh, has anyone sat outside the bistro when a large vehicle needs to come past, does every obligingly move out of way and perpetuate these actions, folk should continue on their path, let the car driver wait, he has no right of way in most cases and is obliged not to run you over...
  17. Ok, so only one death....I think we were more talking about a kiddies playpark, compared to playing on a cliff edge. I really cannot see how 5 year olds would fair the same on either. We all took risks when we were young, but now we are talking as responsible adults. So therefore, as responsible adults we should talk... Nowadays, and we live in this nowaday, letting our kids come to harm could risk prosecution if we allowed it to happen or were neglegent, I as many were sun burnt when young, but now with the knowledge we have gained since then and how getting seriously sun burnt is neglect if we failed to prevent it...remember you are the parent, the one in control of and responsible. You can from an early age teach about such hazards and build them into daily life.. There are many instances where we have changed our habits infont of children cos we know they can harm. Any parent who smokes in a car with kids in should be repremanded and so on, so we dont do it, unless we really dont care about the health of our young and only about something we think we have the right to do... The right of passage need not be tarnished with the risk of serious injury or death...there is absolutly no need....it is not like we have to hunt for our food or climb for gulls eggs...though deep sea fishing may be an exemption. Only now we are teaching our kids to save and not waste. Where we would throw everything over the cliff at the Ness of Sound.. We have a lot of resposibilities toward the young, and duty bound to see that they develop into good folk, in one piece and mentally stable with good health..
  18. Foot paths can be shut, quite easily... notice has to be given and an alternative route posted in paper. Their may not now be a safe passage for folk to the museum so pedestrians are diverted.. Does a pier or other structure constitute the coast, does it mean you can walk anywhere, even Shetland Catch or the oil terminal jetties, or even the ferry jetty?
  19. Get a driving licence, there are only a few folk who push the boundaries. I have been a professional driver for years, and not had an accident...or been the blame for one... Driving is fun and can give a bit of freedom, tho, there are responsibilities and an obligation to others. Folk make mistakes, hence insurance. But, you will find it is well worth the effort.... Please dont have your thoughts jaded by this string, and it could show that driving is a serious matter to some... Folk can always learn, you may just need to give them space to do that...
  20. yup, but every one knows about speed limits in Germany, but if two independant witnesses say you were wreckless, then your nicked....so, there is still a speed limit, a safe one.... The national speed limit is just that and it a MAXIMUM, not a required or minimum. Currently there is a program to reduce that to 50 or 40... Driving with fog lights on, if front can be classed as aggressive driving, and folk have been done for that or reported, although there is no specific law regarding foglights, except their construction, hight and spacing there is a requirement to drive in a safe manner. Deviating from the highway code is part of the evidence needed for various driving offence. If someone noticed your rear foglights on and visibility was not limited to 100 metres or less, and the driver thought you were breaking, and had an accident you could be part to blame. As I said, most things regarding driving will have nothing specific but is covered by other laws... So, If you speed, and you have an accident, tis your fault, you must take resposibility. I did when I was younger drove too fast, but as time goes on, you see things that change your oppinion. And if they dont, you should not be driving, period....but that does not justify others to do the same.. There is NO excuse...just the guilty trying to justify their actions. Are cars NOT SUPPOSEDTO BE DRIVIN DOWN THE STREET, at certain times...so, tis not moron parents, cos why would there be cars down the street? This means if you are driving down the street, perhaps a speed of 5 mph is fitting, especially as they are not really ment to be there. And if they are exempt, should know that it is a mainly pedestrianised area and EXTREEM caution should be excerised. There is NO excuse for an accident, there is always someone who could have done something to prevent it... But being you are in control of the car which you have to drive in a certain way to validate your terms, and pedestians generally move at 3 mph...the fault will generally lay at the hands of the driver... So, as they say, you are always learning to drive, but some quicker than others. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rls=com.microsoft:en-gb:IE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7GPEA_en&q=car+crash+victims&revid=544073126&ei=QpN8St6cB-ahjAfNnYGIBw&sa=X&oi=revisions_inline&resnum=0&ct=broad-revision&cd=5
  21. You should be in FULL control of your vehicle. And sometimes folk do things that are unexpected, that is why as a driver you are always thinking ahead, and prepared for as much as you can prepare for... The road designs are also about speeds, sign spacing, signage, road markingd and surface. So, even though YOU think you were safe, you may not have been. Safe is not the fact you did not hit anything but the fact you were ready not to. Other folk may walk out infront of you, thinking you are only doing 30 or less, and are fully attentive, as required by law..but you are doing 40. You may also have to take into account that some folk may not be able to work the lights or understand, later age related mental illness and other such problems can change folks use of the road, as you are in the thing that can kill, you are really obliged to drive accordingly. Too many folk now rely on brakes and other safety devices rather than thinking ahead. I see it most days when folk think they can drive through roadworks at the maximum limit, even though it may not be safe to do so... Folk leave their journey plannin to the last minute, mess with electrical devices and some times, just are not interested, their brain just engaged in going as fast as possible.... So, admitting you break the speed limit means you are not really joining in with the community and you have little or no respect for other road users, even with the extra noise you create at the faster speed, the more fuel used and more polution you create, and so on, shorter servicing periods, and makes you a little poorer. Tyre wear and greater risks, longer stopping distances and a fine, dearer insurance... Not really worth it, just leave a few minutes earlier..and reduce any risk to others...
  22. Some folk should have their licence removed, you have admitted breaking the speed limit by 33.3%. That is selfish and lunacy..as there are houses, a sports complex and school holidays. there seemed to be two folk on the road that could only care for themselves, just drifted, my bottom, youe were not paying atention to the road or your driving, driving with undue care and atention is anoth offence,,,,,think about others who use the road, and not just yourself. I spend too much of my time clearing up efter speeding drivers who cannot drive within the rules of sensibility.. So perhaps now you will stick up to the prescribed speed limits, to give others a chance, you need to.
  23. Huh, I have to rummage round the woods, but have had rasberries, opal plums and the blackberries are soon....
  24. oh, not a sat nav, should have bin more cleared, sorry. it is specifically just for plotting distances and turns, tha ability to mark points and a backtrack feature... But the Garmin looks the popular, I did own a Magellan, the battery lasted about, 3 hours, the ext power is mainly for night mode when on bike or in car or boat... Thanx for responses, tis kind
