  1. So do you intend to get approx 50% of the population of Shetland to move to your new town or do you intend shipping up 10,000 people from the mainland & elsewhere to live in your proposed community. Also when all these people move in to your ultra cheap rented houses where are they supposed to work? Where are you going to place your sewerage plant your power station your hospital your schools etc etc etc. Sounds like the perfect utopia I seem to recall some people in the past having similiar thoughts you might have heard of them they where called communists in a little country called Russia & things worked out perfectly there didn't they.

    Heating oil

I know there have been plenty of posts re the price of petrol & diesel especially as it is something most of us buy on a weekly basis. Have any of you though ordered oil recently if you haven't be prepared for a shock when you do. I have just ordered some and the price has risen by 21p per litre in the past 6 months alone now its just over 65p per litre. I suppose people can always say use public transport (if there is any)if you can't afford to run your car but I wonder when they are going to come out with public heating if you cant afford to heat your home. In future instead of phoning up and ordering how ever many litres of oil you need its going to be a case of saying I have so much money how many litres of oil can I have. I hope its a mild short winter or there's going to be a lot of very cold people who are reliant on oil for there heating hot water & cooking. Rant over

    Fuel Prices

I take it you are either rich so that the price of fuel doesn't affect you or you live close to where you work and close to the shops so you don't need to have a car to reach either of them. The vast majority of the population of Shetland who live outside of Lerwick need a car due to the lack of public transport, even if there is public transport it might not run at the times they need it for getting to and from work, when was the last time you tried carrying a couple of weeks worth of shopping for a family on the bus or strapped to your back whilst you cycled the 20-40 miles home from Lerwick. Also a lot of people need a car because the closest shop to them is several miles away from where they live. I have nothing against people being green and thinking of the enviroment etc but you have to face reality this isn't the mainland (where fuel is cheaper) where the shop is just round the corner and buses run practically around the clock.
  4. Hi Silvercloud If it was exposed I wouldn't like to try living in a caravan in some of the winds we get up here. A friend of mine has a similar sized caravan which is chained down to concrete and is sheltered at the side of a barn & that still got moved a few feet in one of the storms a few months ago. Cheers Jim
  5. Just seen your adverts ertiewast06 So I take it you wouldn't let an incomer cast your peats or build your stone wall then?
  6. Hi Silvercloud. Just a suggestion as well as asking on the net a lot more people would see your request if you where to advertise in the Shetland times asking for a croft. I have heard it is a more complicated process trying to buy a croft than just buying a house and takes longer to purchase. I hope you have looked into all the legalities of purchasing a croft. Best of luck Jim
  7. C reg Vauxhall cavalier 1.8 gli with plenty of poke. Would hate to see how much the insurance would be for anyone just passing their test now a days for a similiar sized car.
  8. You don't think they are more ill-mannered than Scots? Not more ill mannered than Scots but maybe more ill mannered than most Shetlanders I have met.
  9. Hi Guys Where is the best place to buy electrical items such as washer/driers cookers fridges etc in Shetland. Or am I better off getting items shipped up from the mainland. I tried hydro electric but they didn't seem like they could be bothered in serving me so decided not to spend my hard earned money there. So I was wondering if any one could recommend anywhere. (** MOD EDIT ** Title changed to reflect the topic from "Electrical items")

    Argos

I have been told it is possible to order items from the argos book and have them delivered to Shetland. Can some one please let me know if this is true and how I go about ordering items. Thanks Jim
  11. Thanks Rasmie I shall give them a call tomorrow. Cheers Jim
  12. Sorry cant help you as this is the first time I have heard of an air discount card. I would be most interested though if you could let me know how I go about obtaining one. Cheers Jim
  13. Unfortunately it appears that they have removed your comments. So I have posted similiar comments on there lets see how long they last I suppose we can add a new word to the language Bojan = being a total pillock
  14. Full report on the STV website here What makes the total pillock a celebrity ?
  15. No He isn't a Shetlander. (neither am I but you wouldn't have caught me out there ) I know he was advised about the weather etc but he chose to carry on. I was also told by someone who spoke to him yesterday afternoon that he wasn't properly clothed. A complete idiot I agree he should be made to cover all costs plus stand all the coastguards etc who spent hours looking for him a damn good drink.
  16. That's really more of a judgement than an acceptance. I wouldn't have thought so.
  17. I don't mean to suggest that you do or do not. It's just another belief system which people must not question in order to benefit from. I think you are wrong in stating the above. I and other people I know question what we are told and judge each occurence on its own merit and either accept a message or dont as to its accuracy. I know some people cling to spirituality.mediums. psychics etc because they might have had a great personal loss and grasp at every chance of regaining some sort of contact, which can leave them open to cold reading conmen. Which is sad as no genuine medium will give you a message if there is no message to give.
  18. I am sorry if you think it is a standard response. I just wrote what I felt like writing. I am not reluctant to debate just not in the mood for being petty. As in I suppose if I step over a puddle I shall be crossing water or if I go to the shop I shall be making a journey. Believe me I question most things and again as I stated previously there are con men/women in most things but just because you think someone is conning you it doesn't mean everyone else is conning you. As for believing in god who says I do in the standard world wide religions sense of the word. I believe because I choose to believe after asking questions and observing how things happen.
  19. Rather than start an arguement or drag this on in to pettiness. I cant expect everyone to believe the same as me but I expect people to respect my right to my beliefs, as long as they harm no one else or have a detremental effect on their lives. I guess all I can say is I have my beliefs You have your beliefs. Everyone else has their own beliefs If their beliefs are the same as mine thats fine If their beliefs are the same as yours thats fine as well. I accept that some peoples minds are more open and accepting than others.
