  1. there is an advestiser in the back of one of the shipping magazines i think ships monthly for passages on cargo ships and its not cheap i looked into it a few years ago. yes i aggre a cruise is actually not bad value for money what i meant was that a 2 day trip would considerably more pricey than say 2 days on northlink due to extra services provided i always fancied travelling on a cargo ship (even tho i work at sea) ever since i saw michal palin do it.
  2. i very much doubt you would be willing to pay for even the 2 day trip when you see what services they provide onboard which is why cruises are so expensive. plus as was said before i dont think many cruises operate at less than 100% capacity its just not worthwhile, not like flights or ferrys
  3. haha i do love 27! but shame papa expects all the gritter, ferry, quarry, garage etc and other council workers who start well before 9am to be late. the only way the concil will save money is to stop providing such good services why is there such a demand for social care? is this just care or elderly/disabled? mabye sports centres will have to close 2 days a week or lose a cpl of them, close schools or reduce teachers, dont maintain the roads, cancel some ferry sailings. none of it will be popular no matter what they do. p.s its very wrong that social care workers get paid more than nhs staff (who also work very unsociable hours with mostly even more unsociable patients!!!) it should be similar wages dependant upon qualifications
  4. its already wired in to cabins, i had a 4 bearth to myself last week and had the tea and coffee stuff also noticed the wire next too phone and thought it looked like one for internet - i didnt try mind you but 90% sure thats what it was. i thought i was in an executive cabin as had tv as well but i didnt pay any extra lol!!
  5. trouble is most of your 'tat' as you call it is the same stuff just produced under licence. old man just bought a new lawn mower some brand i never heard of with a honda engine but its excatly the same as the Honda one only built on licence and £400 cheaper! and trust me its identical just diff name tag. he did his research before buying! although iam somtimes weary of cheaper strange branded items, i just bought a tesco 20" telly and its superb quality how long it lasts remains too be seen but my sony dvd player broke after 18mths!
  6. You will prob find that Northlink already provide Internet onboard there vessels for the crew as nowadays internet in your cabin esp for higher rank officers is the norm and on a lot of vessels ive been on its either wired to indivdual cabins or provided thru WIFI so if they already have it it wont be much more expense if any. if its needed or not well thats up to the indivduals
  7. also give Garriock Bros a try always worth just to compare prices
  8. where should the council save money? it has too be saved that is not a debate so where? schools, leasuire centres, mareel, its crunch time and its going to be bad whatever happens. i went too anderson all my days and it was a great school the larger school prepares you for going away. the argument about how good or bad the schools are is a waste of time, there isnt a bad school in shetland!!
  9. Anyone know if this is open? is it just the same as dale i.e money in box and off you go?? planning early start 2moro. anyone know?
  10. just spent 2 weeks working in gulf of mexico, Houston and Galveston followed by short stop in Maimi now in transit too Aberdeen then off too 67degrees north for a few weeks before getting home!
  11. what kinda welding you looking to learn? Arc, Mig, Tig, Gas welding??
  12. it may sound a bit unfair but mabye the orkney lifeline service isnt the one from aberdeen to kirkwall as its not daily thats the shetland lifeline service which is utilised to go to orkney. we only have the one ferry ppl in orkney still have the pentland ferries crossing, think they should bear in mind that they have 3 very good ferry services in 3 differnt ports under normal circumstances. must admit i find it a bit strange that the hammnavoe was tasked to go to norway but ive no doubt questions will be asked about this.
  13. the boat was completly full last night as therefore its great if they shuttle back too help people as not only shetlanders wanting too get off island but others coming up again a night early and also lots of rig workers etc were on too. i think northlink are doing well
  14. think some of the trouble may be with the silly laws that are made somewhere that require certain parts of roads to be red. dont think sic is doing it because they want too but someone in a office somewhere (not locally) has decided its a good idea! thats the way of the world these days isnt it? certaintly is in my industry anyway
  15. Control of what going oot sooth mooth?? the sic is not there too control anything apart from planning etc but councils should not be in business thats not what there for nor is it what any of them are trained for. some think they are savvy business people but i think history shows thats not the case.
  16. if viking energy is going too make so much money why does it need community funding?? why dont they do what total or bp did? pay for it all and pay sic a disturbance payment of £ per kw of electricty produced?? if its going too make so much money (like the oil wealth) it would be private investors paying in! somthing dosent add up and someones trying too make a buck or two!! we all know total are gonna make a packet but shetlands definatly getting something back! all great keeping a nice eviroment but if theres no work or money in island everyone will be living a poor life or in the city! thats my 2 pennith
  17. another sailor here 3rd engineer just about too sit 2nds exams eek!! theres a lot of shetlanders who go too sea but the british seafarers are being replaced wit cheaper crew and officers!!l why northlink didnt just charter the bare ship i dunno would have been cheaper! they already have the crew!! no cost saving there! these things never seem too be mentioned or answered!
  18. i can second Auld Rasmie on Kristiansund having spent a lot of time working there!! nice city, nice harbour and friendly ppl. bergen superb city, stavanger very nice place also, Haugesund is very nice in summer, Kristiansand is also very nice town etc. Austevoll small island off bergen reminded me of whalsay a bit fishing island! spent a fair time in norway and working with noggies with mostly good things too say! well worth a holiday. it is expensive no matter what anyone says but worth it!!
  19. At the end of the day this is the northern part of the north sea, the weather is so varible its hard to predict, the crew on the ships dont want it rough either - imagine doing your job while on the boat in a course night? they have no choice. you cant blame northlink for sailing we can all look at weather forecast and make our own minds up. if you get seasick then fly or just put up with it. one thing northlink can be critised on is not sailing due to complaints thats crazy its a lifeline service, unless the weather is too severe. we all choose too live on a island what else can we expect!!
  20. problems like this i wouldnt spend too long worrying about of course its nice to have a 2nd plan, but if you spend all your time worrying then its not worth the move. the boat may be cancelled during rough weather summer or winter just as the plane may be cancelled during summer due to fog and the boat may be full. its these kinda problems you just have to accept when youlive on a fairly remote island. and you always make do and if everything went right it would never be an adventure or somthing to talk about! they are correct in saying if you have transport you will always get accom outside of aberdeen - westhill, stonehaven, balmedie- airport hotels are not always full either its just hit or miss in aberdeen however city centre you can place a good bet will be full during week. good luck, im sure it will all be fine, welcome to shetland when you arrive
  21. X-Bow would make the passage in rough sea much smoother and faster also reduced fuel consumption (at least thats the idea) works good on offshore vessels. doesnt excatly look traditional mind you!
  22. Sure bar shuts at 1am now!! Please correct me if im wrong. dnt think ive been refused but sure i saw a sign somewhere its hard to mind! as for the bands i dunno sure some kind of entertainment would be worth while in summer anyway. as long as they dont drop shetland routes in winter ill be happy so lifeline service if they do!!
  23. have too say theres nothing worse than someone reclining there damm seat!! no need for it! def my pet hate about flying! esp when the meal is served and you ask the person in front who is the only one with seat reclined to put it up and met witha disgruntled look!! not aimed at you personally sheepshagger but after seeing your remark it brought out the rant in me!! Rant Over
  24. I slept rough on the ferry few weeks back wouldnt say it was a choice as there were no cabins left for males (she got one thankfully) but it wasnt that bad i guess it depends how you look at it i saved 30 quid and having just come of 4 weeks of night shift i wouldnt really have slept anyway! it does get cold tho but thats far far better than it being hot!! i would be surprised if they actully do turn down air con, never know that on any other ship but it generally does get cooler at night. why did they stop the all night drinking? bet that wasnt northlinks idea as bet they lose a lot of money! made the trip more fun! i was young when clair was on the go but i do remember band and dance floor am i right? shame northlink dont do that even just for tourists would break the night up! but i was annoyed about the tvs! crap reception and some broken now i know you can get tv signal all over north sea if you buy the satilite cards surly they could do that at least!! hell we get norwegien tv channels sitting in aberdeen or cork!!
  25. very nice project is on hold so whos paying the lads who started work yesterday with the diggers up at the AHS?? they were preparing for site buildings came from ireland!! this is another farce
