  1. Perhaps its being overpriced so they dont have to undertake it.. Perhaps the cycling community should get together and get quotes and grants themselves, if that's what they actually want.
  2. I see the cost of the cycle path to Hoswick was £53,000. must be half a km at least. seems a lot cheaper than the Clickhimin or Scalloway price! perhaps thy could get the same people to price the rest?
  3. When we wanted a football pitch, we got a bit of land, and then the players came out and worked the ground. There might have been a grant from the council to help with land purchase. Similarly we built miles of peat hill road with the peatcutters as labour. Ok that was probably 3 decades ago. Surely if the acquire the land and the council donated road metal and chips the cyclists could turn out and provide the labour.
  4. The big airports are private businesses who's business is to make money for their shareholders. HIAL's is wholly owned by the Scottish Government and tasked to ensure that Scottish Islands unprofitable airports continue to operate, so they are not really comparable. Obviously the airports have to be paid for and the parking will probably raise half a million a year. I would be keen for and outside body to scrutinise the airport operators accounts to ensure that it is fairly spent. The books have to balance or things wont work. Flights are already cheaper than going by sea. Maybe they are too cheap!
  5. It’ll depend, when Scotland gets independence, we’ll be right back in.
  6. All part of being in the interNationalist socialist paradise that is the EU.
  7. Nothing wrong with Spaniards moving in as long as they do a good job. But unfortunately they will only take over profitable airports. People will. Be too lazy to boycott the car parks
  8. It (air to air) cost about £4500 to install. 4 years ago. I kept a careful record for a year. It was on average £80 a month cheaper than storage heating. It has never had a problem with the cold. It is said to work down to minus25 and is apparently used widely in Norway. Now and again , maybe one or twice a dayit will shut down and de-ice itself for ten minutes if the temperature is set high in the house. We have it timed from 0630 to 0930 and 1630 to 2230. However I am home during the day half the time so I have it on all day in winter then. The indoor units are converters so don’t get hot themselves but draw in air from the room and pump it out hot.
  9. The money spent on runway extensions, car parks and building improvements has probably been entirely necessary. If it wasn't for the money put in by The British Tax Payer, then the airport would probably not be viable in the current situation. The safety and security standards are forever increasing and that means that continual upgrades are ongoing. Only at a private airfields not used by the General Public and are Self-insured can you get away with running on a shoe-string, these days. Once upon a time they were able to run at a profit, but it seems not so these days, so someone has to fork out money if a service is to continue. If you don't to pay for subsidised flying, you can go on the subsidised boats. although if you pay your taxes, you pay for some of it anyway.
  10. What we need is someone capable, to go through HIAL's books and find out the real cost of running the airport- although they may be deliberately muddy. I remember when the good old days when the book showed a million pound profit, which all went to subsidise the other "highlander" airports including the HIAL headquarters/ Inverness airport. Of course if it is found that Sumburgh runs at a loss then the shortfall will be made up somewhere else, be it car parking fees, airport taxes or income tax. I wid suggest da cooncil tak it ower, bit that wid be the end.
  11. I have heard ground source is better, but I believe more costly. Air source causes very little disruption and is quick to install. mine took 6 hours. You would be better getting advice though from a specialist. The lady above mentioned E & H.
  12. look in the mirror and ask, is it me, or is it everyone else?
  13. It’s all a plot by the nasty Scottish Government to get us to go live in Glasgow and the central belt.
  14. There's no such thing as a free car park. WE had to pay for its construction, and now its upkeep along with the responsibilities of running one. Also as HIAL is a publicly owned company so any income it generates comes back to the Scottish taxpayer. They (British Airways) stopped running buses because hardly anybody used them. The council run a bus service for the locals which happens to stop at the airport. However it can't wait for airline passengers who are not waiting for it, because local people rely on the bus service to get to work and shop etc. However if enough people were to use the bus service then it is possible that a dedicated airport bus service could be put in place. There are an incredible number of people that a) leave their car long term and frequently nip away for weekends.(There are a lot of people up here with plenty disposable income.)
  15. I always thought Northlink tickets were fully changeable, / cancellable for no penalty?
  16. ^^ On that recommendation i'll definitely buy one. But what a miserable comment
  17. In some countries I believe flashing head lights are a warning, that means give way I am coming through.
  18. Yes, and it would make an excellent bargaining chip to get an independent Scotlandinto the EU and the Euro.
  19. Only high value waste e.g. metals can be recycled economically in a small place like Shetland. Even that will involve sending by ship to Scotland, which is probably not realistically doing much for our carbon footprint. General rubbish recycling will probably never be viable and there incinerating it and making use of the heat produced is probably the least damaging. Reducing waste has to be the better solution,e.g. reducing packaging and plastics, and eating mainly locally produced products
  20. There is the nub of the problem. "somebody" should sort it out. The council have no money and a lack of organisational ability. Living Lerwick is more or less out of it. It all takes money. Who is going to spend money on a failing enterprise like this? Unless "somebody" is willing to take this on and give "their" time and effort to apply for Government/Lottery/EU funding, and then try and persuade local trader to back them. Not me, said the little red hen.
  21. Kirkwall does have a nicer selection of shops. Possibly greatly helped that they have a load more tourists, due to the shorter cheaper sea crossings.
  22. Of course the CEO was appointed not voted in, and no-one would take this job or any job for that matter for less than the going rate. No-one sane at least. One of the main roles will be to manage or "look after" the staff. Must be better having a local getting the job, who is part of the local community, than bringing up a chancer from sooth.
  23. Phew! If any of the above had said anything positive about her, i'd be extremely worried.
  24. Well I guess if we don't support shops on the street we needn't whinge when they are all shut.
  25. I find that most local retailers not only sell online but are well aware of online prices and price accordingly or will match them. I know it’s easier to sit on the couch and order online, and a lot of people have been put off visiting Commercial Street, by the speed bumps and the general negativity surrounding their installation.
