until life in prison is more miserable than life on the streets, no form of "rehabilitation" is possible.

That statement makes absolutely no sense. In fact I suspect that those who do attempt to rehabilitate prisoners would probably claim that bad conditions in prison lead to resentment rather than rehabilitation.

Yes it is true that there are people on the streets who might commit a crime just to get back into prison but that is surely due to a failure to offer appropriate help to people in that situation. Care in the community comes to mind or perhaps that should be lack of care in the community.

spinner if most of the inmates were there because of those conditions then they would not be criminals. the adage about a man stealing bread when they are starving applies. A lot a addicts and a significant number have mental health issues. sort those out with good programs and give them a positive out look on release and that would impact on repeat offenders.

CRIMINAL JUISTICE WHATS THAT ???...You just have to look at certain Shetland musician who had no less than 700 pictures off innocent children...

300 hours community service and to crow it all he isn't even banned from working with children under 16 where is the justice there for those poor children that sicko had pictures off???????? :x :x

I suspect that the Shetland Community generally feels let down by the justice system and therefore it will be much harder for (an) (** mod edit - try and keep this objective! **) individual to live and work in the community.

I suggest that this isolation is likely to increase his stress and possibly therefore will re-offend.

:( :( :(

The punishment does not fit the crime.

it was THEIR choice to commit the crime, taking drugs are illegal and they are in prison so why the heck are you pleepsin about them getting drug tested.

You also go on that if they work they only get £2 / week so how the heck can they afford drugs so why the heck are they worried about drug testing?

The sheriff really needs a reality check....

Christ what is he thinking? I understand that once they've been named and shamed etc that this could be a harsh enough punishment for them, but for goodness sake!!!

Paedophiles are simply as low as you get, they make my skin cruel!

Paedophiles are paedophiles regardless of looking at pictures or actual physical touch etc.....They should all be hung!!

I feel as though in my opinion "remember this is just my own personal views" that the sheriff is some what making it acceptable, he hands jail sentence to a seal killer but wont do the same for these disgusting men, to me looking at any form of child pornography is just simply not acceptable and these dirty men/woman that do it should have one of the heaviest harshest sentences allowed! How far does a paedophile have to go with a child before they get a good sentence....not any of this pathetic community sentence rubbish...........9 out of 10 start with looking at pictures then work their way onto harsher stuff before finally doing the worst thing possible.......Come on sheriff have a look at this and think, would you let your grand child be around these monsters??!!! If NOT then do something about it.......
