I got one of these unsolicited calls the other day

exept it was an automated voice on the other end saying it was HBOS with some inportant security info about my account...Scam I thought...

Turns out it was HBOS fraud department and someone had scammed a pile of money out of my account!

Ouch!

I guess it might always be worth ringing the proper number back to check if they're actually trying to get hold of you. Get so vigilant its easy to dismiss it might be real I guess. Hope you get it back ok!

I had a similar phone call from my bank once. I asked the guys name, looked up the head office's phone number and gave them a call and asked for the guy. I was put through to the guy so i knew he was legitimate.

Turned out that some computer shop in London had tried to put through a small transaction (a couple o pence) which was then followed by a £1500 transaction so the bank knew something funny was happening and declined the transaction.

Never phone the number that they tell you to, always look it up yourself, as they will be pretty easy to track down if they are who they say they are.

I got the same call actually, but I decided to call back just in case. Turns out there had actually been a huge amount of fraudulent activity on some HBOS accounts, they cancelled my debit card and issued me with a new one. First time HBOS have actually done something timely and taken the initiative...

I once got a call from someone who alleged to be from my bank who wanted to help me invest my money better and then wanted lots of security info. I said why do you want that, you phoned me? They got angry, I said goodbye and hung up.

Another time a salesman tried to sell me something. I said I'm not interested; but you know what they're like. He said I'm not selling I just want to tell you about 'bla bla bla'. So I said okay, you tell me what it is and how great it is and then I'll tell you why I don't want it. He hung up! :D

Stay alert and hey ....... let's be careful out there

yeah, I went to the bank and showed them the number..the woman didn't recognise it at first and checked my account to see if the fraud dept. had flagged it as the do when they try to make contact. Nothing. So she checked my account and there's several payments to PAYG mobiles on the same day totaling over a hundred pounds. So she called the number back and went through all the details with me and destroyed/canceled my card there and then. Got the full amount refunded and a new card by the end of the week!

Strange thing was I hadn't used my card online for anything other than topping up my mobile which also uses HBOS secure so am still to figure out how it was scammed....

impressed they picked up on it so quick though, they were trying to contact me the same day even though it was multiple small amounts scammed, nothing over £50 in one transaction.

  • 5 months later...

Got a phone call from some IT services guy. Talking about a virus problem which is predominantly rife in Shetland. I wasn't too forthcoming with info as I thought it was a scam call and hadn't heard about it. I told him I had Linux then he just hung up without telling me any more. My own fault for being so cautious.

Anyone able to enlighten?

We got that same call about 2 months ago.

Luckily I had heard about this particular scam, where you're told "you could already be infected"

You are then directed to a download page, and told to install something that will then infect your pc and send data to them.

I also told the guy I was a Linux user and he did the same and terminated the call.

Yip, it is a scam. They have phoned me about 4 times in the last 2 months. They tell you your computer has viruses and try to gain access. Tell them your an IT specialist and ask for details of their company and they quickly hang up. Whatever you do, do not allow them access to your computer.

Unfortunately these type of calls are on the increase and there seems to be little anyone can do to stop them as they originate from abroad. So rather than allowing them to raise your blood pressure, turn it into a game and make up different stories to fool them, or continue to ask them questions , or put them on hold etc, they soon hang up.
