The soft play area wouldd be excellent idea many families in past have talked about this and how much it would actually cost to set and run, parties could be held there it could be hired out, give somewhere for local children and tourists families to go in bad weather and winter.

It would be finding somwhere and the insurance cost.

Maybe the concil would like help out  with such idea or grant avaialble perhaps yo can dream.

A bowling alley wold also be good ,cold also be hired out etc ,maybe at airport or elsewhere perhaps more central.

You should go to Market House they will help you set up any new groups you want. You could also speak the the local Health Visitors, they might help you too.

good luck

Someone was going to do this, but i think after they did the business plan it fell through. I think they had the idea lodged with the enterprise co. this stops others folk pinching they idea (and poss funding) i think???

They were questionairs going about the toddler groups not long ago, but dont know what happend, again they might know at Market House.

The thing is would the Shetland folk aford to go enough to cover running costs

In reply to most of the above, why do people come to live here?

I came to Shetland because the lifestyle was different from everywhere else, reading the above posts, if they all came about, where's the difference from other places South, competitive fuel prices, Yes, fair delivery charges Yes, Royal Mail offer a good delivery service subject to the size and weight of the goods to be delivered, but some sellers rip us off because we're an Island, I'm happy to pay Royal Mail charges but some of the courier charges and delivery are just beyond the pale.

Going back to my home town in Cumbria is sad, as they have all the above ie. Lidle, Aldi, Morrisons, etc. but no main shopping street as all the shops have closed down, are boarded up or are Charity Shops, Take away's, oh and Pound shops..... every second shop is a bloody pound shop.

Do we really want to see our Beautiful Island become the same? My home town used to have the same population as the whole of Shetland, now the population has doubled, and is now around 42,000, mind that's a small, town not a group of small Island's.

Me, I love Shetland and would hate it to change so much that a trip South would be no different than a trip to Lerwick, but then if all the changes came about that most of the above want to see, Lerwick would be boarded up like most towns South.

People come to visit Shetland because it's different, why change it too much?

Thanks to everyone. I think we all have validity in our requests n wishes.

In response to Suzanna

I agree about all the wonderful things that living in Shetland outweighs the mainland with.

I have had the fortune of living in many parts of the world. I agree Shetland ranks amoung the best in the world.

I agree we don't want all the commercialism of the mainland but in saying that having a complete monopoly by the likes of Tesco isn't a blessing either.

These islands couldn't support the likes of all those chain stores and besides, the council would never allow that much competition and commercialism on the island. A lidl or aldi would be nice for our budgets and choice even just a little is nice. Kirkwall has a lidl and they haven't gone nuts with commercialism.

One pound shop would be nice.

And must admit I really enjoy the fact there is actually a place in the world that is not plagued by the existence of macdonalds:)

I do think that the likes of a bowling alley and soft play area would be great!

It gives children young n old some good fun with friends in the community or just family bonding. In our weather a good part of the year it would be great having the additional options. Soft play areas are great for children. They can really put their heart and soul into playing and discovery and just plain old wholesome fun and be safe as well as giving parents a little respite.

As for the fuel prices... It still astounds me that it comes from here yet we are robbed every time we fill up. It shouldn't cost as much as it does. And in fact we need it more than most mainlanders. They have a choice and ready access to various modes of public transportation we don't n really do need motors to access.
