MuckleJoannie
If you are working 8 to 5 there are bus services to central mainland, plus a certain amount of eveneing services if you are planning to use the amenities in Lerwick. http://www.zettrans.org.uk/bus/BusTimetables.asp

seaviewz
I moved here without viewing but I did have friend recommendations to go by whom were already islanders. Wonderful place to live, and you feel a million miles away from the daily hypocrisy and crap that livng in suburbia throws at you! I live very rural on he island and it does throw up problems for commuting, but it depends what makes things easier for you personally. Me?, I would rather be rural and do the longer commute, its approx 75 mile round trip for me into Lerwick, but there are other areas for employment. It depends what you do I suspose. Theres a good jobs page on shetnews. Good luck in your move if you go for it, I certainly never looked back!

You only live once.. best of luck whatever you decide to do. Life isnt partically easier as such here, infact life takes alot more planning being so rural...and sometimes having limited resources. I cant just 'pop to the corner shop' or pop to tescos for instance! but the pro's out weigh the cons by far on a whole, and a wonderful place for children to grow up. A@C
Does our potential immigrant have the same understanding of "rural" that we do. For most of the UK's city dwellers I would imagine Lerwick would be very very rural. I would think that finding a place to live at the moment would be more of an issue than finding work. Also the fares to go back and fore to the mainland would be a heavy consideration. Frances144
Nightshade
mmm never been classed as an immigrant before.....I understand that any move for anyone would be difficult I am however not jumping into this feet first hench why I came on here to ask for peoples information on the area and my 'homework' on the area has highlighted some problems with accomadation but like anywhere if u look hard enough and are willing to do the extra mile with research etc then u can always find something thanks for your reply
Guest tiodylb17
Hi You should try Scalloway or Burra as they are both good places to live and reasonably close to Lerwick with good bus services, you might be able to find a job in Scalloway depending on what you are willing to do and availability. The only thing ill say is its a long winter and if you can put up with the dark nites plus windy and rainy weather then you will be fine. Good luck and i hope all goes well with your move
Nightshade
thanks rain and wind dont bother me ive lived in wet and windy west of scotland for over 20 years lol although its only a short trip to the big city lights I hardly ever go as i prefer the local shops and the rural side of life. panrider913
We moved up to Shetland and bought a house on Whalsay, just over a year ago now.I work in lerwick and even with the ferry trip across I am in lerwick an hour after leaving home. ( 30 min ferry crossing, during which I relax and read, and then a 20 min car drive )It used to take me over an hour to drive 8 miles with holiday traffic where we lived before. We moved with the attitude of " would rather regret doing it than regret not doing it"Its worked for us. People up here are so nice and have made us so welcome. As for the weather. To be honest, certainly this year its been better than it was in our home town on the East coast. Go for it. It doesn`t have to be forever. Spinner72
