  1. Are you sure these were shot? It is rather unusual for either a whaup or a shalder to be targeted. Bunxies and swaabies are predators and have a much worse reputation.
  2. When does the Tesco extension open? It has already been delayed.
  3. Beach combing and a bonfire? Dinner at Busta. Trip to Eshaness light for birding, scenery, photography and dine at the Breiwick Cafe. Trip to Unst with a meal at the Baltasound Hotel. Stay over if you like.... Overnight at the Gardiesfauld Hostel in Uyeasound.
  4. Have a look at the property pages on the Shetland News website. I have seen one croft advertised with Neil Risk, solicitors anyway and there may be more.
  5. Yes. You have to buy one if it becomes available or rent one from a crofter who is retiring from crofting.
  6. Greta Fullerton, Scalloway makes hoodies to order plus loads of other good stuff.
  7. Oh dear, skater boy! What is your problem? Also, what does "tirned" mean? I am familiar with the word "tirn" but not this particular version you used.
  8. Eat a piece of apple. That'll sort it.
  9. In the past, Shetlanders shot seals for profit - for their skins, to sell or to use themselves for rivlins, belts, bags, purses and to make use of the blubber. They did not shoot them to leave them to decay on the beach. Bunxies were never a problem near the house as all the sheep were on the hill and it was "survivsl of the fittest" which is the law of the jungle! They do peck the eyes from lambing yowes and other sick sheep but so does the craa and the corbie. That's how they survive. Nowadays, the inbye parks are full of highly bred sheep rather than crops so the bunxies are ever nearer.
  10. I am really surprised to see a bad review of Spiggie Hotel. We have always had great service and food there and last month we bought a voucher for friends wedding anniversary for bed breakfast and evening meal. They are still enthusing about the welcome they received, the food, the kindness, attention to detail etc and the fact that they received a bottle of champagne when they left to continue the celebrations! Longdog must have caught them on a really bad day!

  13. Ate at the Fort Cafe today and it was wonderful!
  14. Yes, Shetland Transport will pick it up from the ferry terminal in Aberdeen adn bring it home. We got ours up like that two years ago and it's doing fine. A Lerwick builder recommended we do this as they can't do it anywhere near as cheap as you can buy from B & Q.
  15. Get it sent up from B&Q and strenghten it for Shetland weather.
  16. Never had a problem at Spiggie. We have stayed over as well as dining there and the food, service and staff were wonderful.
  17. Samphrey Bridder Isle There is only one town in Shetland and the only island near there is Bressay which is still inhabited. Scalloway is really only a large village.....
  18. Dry it and cut it up to use in your rag rug! Or give it to Burra Bears...
  19. As I wis gyaain doon da stair I met me sister Aannie. Took aff hir heid an drank hir bluid An left da boady staandin. (Bottle of red wine). Therty white horses 'pun a rid hill Dere dey go, dere dey go, dere dey staand still. (Teeth and gums!) Dad wis wint ta tell wis yun eens an mair.
  20. Snow in Scalloway and on the way home to Voe but the roads are fine.
  21. We have to plant what is reccommended for the type of ground and climate. I can get seabuckthorn to grow here at all but the other species I mentioned all grow well. We plant native and Shetland grown species as much as possible but by trial and error have discovered what does thrive in this area. What grew well in England/Scotland does not necessarily grow here at all.
