  1. We use Hargreaves Landsdown too.
  2. Yep, I've long found it quite funny that this is actually the correct dialect pronounciation. I can't quite see the tourist industry rolling out "Shetland, land of the Shets" type slogans Heheh. Unfortunately the people I heard using it weren't doing so in Shetland dialect and weren't exactly using it in a complimentary way. C'est la vie.
  3. Probably. Much used by current lot who have set off to uni in the last 2/3 years. At least it's an improvement on 'Scumdee' which seems to be the other sobriquet of choice! Probably come from footie nicknames but doubt if it's used widely by locals. Maybe a youngsters' thing as you say. Scumdee - heheh. I've heard Sh1tland used for Shetland before too!
  4. Amongst my young friends who have escaped south to various universities the standard Facebook terminology for Abdn is indeed The Deen, whereas my current home city is The Dee... I'm a Dundonian and I've never heard it called 'The Dee' before. Is that a new thing? I thought 'The Dee' was Dundee FC.
  5. Yes, Dip'n'Strip is still going strong. Anthony Mowat does it. Contact details as above. Hillswick, first house on the left after the school, has the name Dip'n'Strip above the garage. While you're in Hillswick, go along to the very nice craft shop in Hillswick.
  6. Funny, I was just thinking it would be good if they were on the street.. >

If you don't hear back from Hanne straight away, she may be away on holiday but she would get back to you.

    Pilates

The excellent Pilates teacher, Hanne Irvine, has been doing classes for a few years now - see her Facebook page for info. This page shows her timetable with locations. I've no connection apart from being a very satisfied user! Pilates is becoming an essential for me - I end up getting backache and all sorts of aches and pains if I don't do it!
  11. Never has so much c**p been spouted in one thread by so few..
  12. What's the point in maybe having 50 different types of cheeses They're apparently going to have an Asian food section.
  13. This is what the black lace elder looks like when it's just about to come into flower - http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/cope/webpix/black_lace_elder_1.jpg These are the elders we got, also from Cope - the three small ones on the far left are this year's. The 3 on the right have been in a couple of years and are black elder, variegated elder and black lace elder. http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/cope/webpix/elders.jpg The black elder is coming into flower now - http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/cope/webpix/black_elder_1.jpg http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/cope/webpix/black_elder_2.jpg This is the pink and white rosa rugosa - http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/cope/webpix/rosa_rugosa_2.jpg http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/cope/webpix/rosa_rugosa_3.jpg Another lovely one is hydrangea petiolaris - a lace cap hydrangea. Maybe not one to start with though, better south facing. http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/cope/webpix/hydrangea_petiolaris_2.jpg http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/cope/webpix/hydrangea_petiolaris_1.jpg
  14. Rosa rugosa grows well here. It comes in two colours - pink and white. You can see the white nearest the gate and pink further along. Lovely scent and then later loses the flowers and has nice hips. > You'd get it from the places mentioned by others, Cope, Rosa Steppan, etc or come and see me and get a few cuttings! http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/cope/webpix/rosa_rugosa.jpg
  15. Re wifi & Northlink: There's a Facebook group 'Internet on Northlink!' trying to get people to sign the petition. I added that it was already mentioned (back in May) that Northlink were apparently going to provide wifi - http://www.shetlandmarine.com/2010/08%20Shipping/NorthLink%20go%20for%20growth.htm ""..the ferry operator has re-launched its popular Family & Friends promotion, will run a special cabin promotion and is improving the on-board service by introducing free wi-fi access for passengers and tea and coffee trays in all cabins." This is what Northlink told the creator of the FB group: "What we hope to offer is free WiFi access from the main public areas (Deck 6) on Hjaltland & Hrossey. The usual blocks on ‘inappropriate’ websites will apply. In addition... we will have to block any streaming web-sites as the bandwidth available is limited. However, for most normal browsing, e-mails, etc we believe the speed of download available will be acceptable." (Creator of FB group: The reason they haven't done it before now is because it would previously be too expensive, but there is new found technology now making it possible. They're testing and trying it now.) "Hopefully before too long the WiFi access you seek will be operational and we will issue a press release and put notices on the vessels at that time." Spotted this, not sure if it's just when the ships are in port: http://www.smallbusiness.co.uk/channels/technology-in-business/guides-and-tips/20756/guide-to-mobile-working.thtml ....All operational areas, including the ships, are part of a WiFi local area network (LAN). Having secure, stable network connections means that NorthLink can quickly transfer data from different areas, ensuring a more efficient financial and management information system. Logistics and operations information has also been streamlined. Passenger lists are also automatically produced. Altogether, this has saved roughly £30,000 a year.
  16. Anyone know who is the editor of the Shetland Times now and who's the owner of ST Ltd? Cheers.
  17. There was me thinking this was about buying a mouse from Viking Direct..
  18. Spiders Web across from the Queens Hotel in Lerwick are great for garments. Jamiesons or Andersons on the street. For great selection of hats made by locals - if you're in Northmavine you could do worse than visit me at Oily Muggie in Hillswick. Open every day 10-5pm. Straight across the crossroads at the hotel, follow the blue signs up towards the farm and blacksmith. I'm at the end/top of the road! I also do online - www.designedinshetland.co.uk - however it's a little neglected at the mo as I've been busy in the shop, so there's a far bigger selection in the shop just now. Feel free to phone/email/pm or come along.
  19. And that's what makes life interesting.
  20. It's a wonder you can walk, with the weight of that chip on your shoulder.. yay , drive the yokels into the sea n put warm fluffy claes on the pretty little seals if you really dont understand by now theres no point I'm presuming you think I'm anti-Shetlander or something? Nothing's farther from the truth. This thread has already gone off-topic badly ages ago - pm me if you want and I'll be happy to talk to you.
  21. Just when I thought we were all getting on..
