  1. The 'Sandwick Sessions' take place every second Friday in the Sandwick Social Club - the next is the 27th I believe Fiddle Frenzy starts on Monday and has concerts every night for a week - the concerts are listed on page 14 of the programme available from the website http://www.shetlandarts.org/events/fiddle-frenzy
  2. Great programme on Fiddlers' Bid last night. It's available on iPlayer for those of you that missed it - http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00t9sq1/Fiddlers_Bid_aig_Fichead_%28Fiddlers_Bid_at_Twenty%29/
  3. Hey ewenutz The standard tuning for a 5 string is (low to high) B - E - A - D - G, like a normal four string with an extra B below. Tuning it like that makes it relatively easy to swap between the 4 and 5 string instruments as the intervals between each string on both instruments is the same If dy four string is tuned Eb - Ab - Db - Gb it might be worth trying tuning the low string on the 5 to Bb to keep the intervals the same If du's looking for a warmer sound from the Jazz bass, use the neck pick-up mainly (the one nearer the bridge gives more of a mid range honk) and pluck nearer the neck Jazz basses are by nature a bit more mid/top heavy in tone than a Precision. Try comparing the two by playing them unplugged so you can see what difference the pick-ups and electronics are making. If the Jazz bass sounds a lot more twangy that the Precision, it's probably because the strings are newer or are a lighter gauge. I'd try a heavier gauge before resorting to making modifications. And you canna beat some sweat and dead skin among the string windings to take the top end off! If you're needing a hand setting the basses up, geez a shout!
  4. The job profiles and application info is on the Shetland Arts website - http://www.shetlandarts.org/opportunities/
  5. Interior or exterior?Exterior, and re-pointing old stonework Thanks for the recommendations so far folks
  6. Any recommendations for plasterers?
  7. ^ Several local 'niche' shopkeepers claim that Tesco pricecheckers, or whatever their job title is, have been visiting shops to find out which brands they stock and the retail prices Tesco have been touting their new 'asian foods' line, so I'd expect World Tastes will be in for a tough time
  8. Many town centre shops trade online already, and have done for years. I know that the Camera Centre http://www.thecameracentre.net - the Shetland Times Bookshop http://www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/shop/ - and the Shetland Soap Company http://www.shetlandsoap.co.uk/ - have well established and brisk online custom
  9. That certainly seems to be the situation The planning documents are available here - http://www.shetland.gov.uk/planningcontrol/apps/pdfs/default.asp?filter=2008_245_PCD - Tesco's "Retail Impact Assessment" states that through building the extension they won't be in competition with anyone apart from the Co-op supermarket, and they won't be increasing stock of "non food" items. Despite their assurances, they have clearly not stuck by their word, and local planners apparently have no way to make them comply Examples include: http://www.shetland.gov.uk/planningcontrol/apps/pdfs/2008_245_PCD/2008_245_PCD_Scan_004_Retail_Impact_Assessment_Part_2_SUPERSEDED.pdf * 2.4 "It is important to state at the outset that the increase in sales floorspace will be for the sale of convenience goods only" http://www.shetland.gov.uk/planningcontrol/apps/pdfs/2008_245_PCD/2008_245_PCD_Scan_004_Retail_Impact_Assessment_Part_5_SUPERSEDED.pdf (note that the first and last pages are mixed up) * 5.25 "...the modest proposed extension of 868sqm net retail area will not raise any issues of retail impact upon the town centre....Additional diversion will result from the extension, but as the only other main food superstore in Shetland, the Coop will retain a competitive market share." * 5.6 "The assessment concludes that there will not be any significant impact on the town centre of Lerwick or any rural shops. The criteria is therefore satisfied", the criteria being "that the vitality and viability of existing centres and rural shops will not be prejudiced" * 5.7 "In terms of criteria, an existing condition relating to previous planning consents at the store is already in place which deals with the issue. In any case, it is not the intention of the proposal to seek to increase the amount of non-food shopping floorspace. Therefore, no legal agreement is required in this case" - the criteria being that "the applicant signs a planning agreement limiting the amount of non-food shopping floorspace"

I'm the music development officer at Shetland Arts, and part of Mareel's programming group Club nights will be at least monthly, and Mareel is available for hire for promoters to put their own nights on too

Mareel will have regular club nights, both licensed and unlicensed, and it won't be "just for traditional Shetland music and the like"
  13. There needs to be acoustic isolation between the auditorium, cinema, recording studio, rehearsal rooms etc and the public areas such as the foyer and cafe bar are all large and spacious with glass panel walls
  14. Vik, it's a building site! Unfinished blockwork isn't know for its aesthetic qualities
  15. The BT ads have been cancelled. Hopefully that'll improve things for you
  16. Here's a few of the latest images of the interior of Mareel - the full set of photos taken earlier this week, with additional info, can be viewed here - Part of the main auditorium from the balcony http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4093/4794352166_05b3ba9571.jpg Top floor creative industry space / teaching room (the chap in the left of the photos gives an idea of scale. He's a fairly average height!) http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4135/4793706753_320565d170.jpg Recording studio control room, looking into live room http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4093/4794268418_71f20869f3.jpg Recording studio live room, looking into control room http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4081/4794263356_dcbd0a1399.jpg Cafe Bar - looking toward the foyer (there will be glass panel wall where the barriers are situated) http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4115/4793736073_a5349f1014.jpg
  17. For the sake of clarity and without wishing to go off topic, the SIC education budget isn't affected by Mareel Mareel is managed by Shetland Arts Development Agency, not the SIC - the SIC contributed around half of the capital build costs and there is no ongoing revenue costs to the SIC
  18. More evidence of the damage caused by the leaking of information and discussing Mr Clark's employment in the media source: http://www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/2010/06/28/council-chief-might-have-remained-in-post-while-suing-for-2m-says-sic-solicitor source: http://www.shetland-news.co.uk/2010/June/news/Clark%20could%20have%20claimed%20%C2%A32%20million.htm
  19. ^ Indeed Spinner72, but I think unlikely that the local news agencies will divulge their sources Given the evidence presented by Sandy Cluness (below), it would seem likely that one or more of the six elected members who made the initial complaint would know who had access to the contents and/or have information regarding the source of the leak, if that's a line of enquiry the Accounts Commission take source: http://www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/2010/06/28/leaking-of-complaint-left-council-open-to-legal-action-convener-tells-public-inquiry As far as I'm aware, this is the Shetland Times website article in question - http://www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/2009/12/08/six-councillors-call-for-chief-executive-to-be-suspended-pending-investigation-into-misconduct On tonight's Radio Shetland Dave Clark also stated that a factor in the breakdown of communications and procedures was elected members regularly and inappropriately using the media to voice their concerns
  20. The website seems to be updated 'as and when' during the week
  21. Such as? as I have already said.... and... and... and...
  22. You're way off the mark there. The SIC first commissioned research into options for a cinema and/or music venue in 1997. After years of consultation Mareel was entered onto the SIC's capital programme in 2003 and they made a financial commitment in 2004 You're also way off on your figures. The total build cost of Mareel will be around £12 million, and more than half of the money has come from sources out with Shetland. The SIC provided a one-off capital payment of £5,190,000 to Mareel and there is no revenue cost to the SIC It would seem that it's OK for you to travel to wherever you want to make a living, but it's not OK for other people to come to Shetland to make a living, or have an opinion
