Njugle
^ Tack onto that a commercial street electric mini-tram, of narrow gauge ilk, so that the disabled, elderly and infirm still have a means to get to shops in the vehicle free pedestrian zone. Quirky, people like quirky! Get smirk to design the cab, and call it soemthing catchy. It could of course link to the Viking train terminus, for full integration, du keens

banksbroo
Transport:Increase transport services, especially to rural areasCurrent system is workable if you work 9-5Useless if you work part time or don't want to spend the whole day in the townMore bus shelters - waiting in force 8 gale in driving rain on muddy verge is no fun Make more imaginative transport - dial a ride schemes, community taxis, small mini-bus style busses. It doesn’t have to be all about huge (50 seater?) bussesHow about free bus and ferry transport for all - save a fortune on expensive ticketing systems and accounting, encourage more use of public transport. Tourists would love it.Encourage more people to leave the car at home.By allowing more mobility to folk, more folk can take part in work, leisure, education by able to get to the place where most of these things happen - da toon. MoneyGet the councillors off the various Charitable Trusts. Being elected councillors should not automatically make you a trustee of money which belongs to everyone in Shetland, not the council. Lets have proper elections for trustees. RoadsHow about a 20 mph zone for all of lerwick. Less bumps and accidents. Safer streets, less wear and tear on roads. How about a serious commitment to the environment? On the one hand the council supports a big windfarm to reduce CO2, on the other they fly half way round the world on jollies producing thousands of tonnes of CO2. I love the idea of paying mileage allowance as an inverse proportion of your engine size, bigger engine - less per mile.
Mutton
Stop the cinema and music venue - Until people can't actually go to a film due to it being sold out! As for music venue, community halls, Clickimin and pubs are fine. Wage cuts across the Recreational Trust - those lifeguards and other workers at the sports centres are overpaid and do very little - particularly in Yell where you may get one or two customers on a Sunday. Tunnels to Yell and Unst Make council staff work till 5pm on a Friday. Seek to become a dependency of the UK along side Jersey, Isle of Mann and Faroes (in relation to Denmark) etc
sheepshagger
Why JAStewart should we pay for a mosque IF the very small minority of muslims in Shetland want a mosque they are within their rights to build one but they are also within their rights to fund it themselves, this goes equally for christians, jews, hindus, budists an ony other faith. get a grip o reality an stop thinking o pandering to some idiots sooth that think we have to pay for every creed other than our own.Being politicaly correct probably means you haven't got the brains to form your own ideas

Our OIL our FISH (NOT YOURS MR SALMOND)The finances available to the council would more than make up for their incompetance within a week we could aford to run cables to the uk and scandinavia and sell power generated from wind and tide though why we would want to build a wind farm is beyond me we could invest in the technology for tidal power and work with p.u.r.e. in developing hydrogen technology. No income tax and very low rates of corporation tax (just think of the companies that would base the head office here) controlled immigration we don't have to be xenophobic just realistic about why some people want to come here. There is so much we could do if only we had the courage of our ancestors and the fore sight of our scandinavian cousins.Anybody wishin to contradict me come ahead
Mutton
Sheepshagger You obviously feel quite strongly about this, and many may feel rightly so. However, are you doing anything to bring about such a change? Such independence shall never happen unless we actually have people like yourself who are going to go out there and convince the public on a larger scale ie radio, paper, tv... Have you thought about standing for the SIC on such an issue?

Mutton
An independent Shetland could rake in billions from tax revenue I think is the point
Styles
An independant Shetland we could all piss money on poor investments like the council and it wouldent matter as there would still be loads of cash. We could all have it as a hobby!
BigMouth
Pay mileage rates to SIC employees at a rate inversely proportional to engine size. I only half heard it, but someone on Radio Shetland has suggested some sort of flat mileage rate on claims for SIC employees, to discourage driving large thirsty vehicles on SIC business when it is mostly unnecessary. Did anyone hear who it was?

WE COULD become just about the richest country per person on this planet if we want it. We have resources not only oil and fish but also renewables, we could engineer our tax system to attract business. We could form an alliance with Norway/ Denmark/Faeroe/Iceland and form a deal to integrate into their exemplary health services. I see a huge potential in this. I also see a huge potential for poverty if we continue down the route we are currently heading. If only we could find the will to take control of our own future.
