mogling
Personally I wish Lesley the best of luck. There's a lot of hard work involved which she has probably already started! Up Helly Aa corresponds with the ancient Pagan festival of Imbolc, a special day for honouring the Goddess who was slowly turning the Wheel of the Year back to spring: Freya, Brigid, Blaize, Venus, Diana, Lucina- all "Flame Godesses", as well as welcoming back the Sun God, so having a female Jarl is especially appropriate I think! {Choose white, yellow & pink for your outfit, Lesley?} "In Nordic Tradition, Imbolg was known as Disting-tid and was a day to ritually prepare the earth for planting by strewing it with salt, ashes and sacred herbs. This was done even if the land was still covered in snow and ice." {Edain McCoy} Ashes, hmm... one way of clearing up after a Galley burning- aabody takes some home to scatter on the rigs & gardens?! Folk in Shetland long ago celebrated the end of the feasting of the Yules {Jul meaning 'Wheel' in old Norse} and the ensuing times of hardship and frugality with food {Lent?}, by having one final party - Up Helly Aa - 'the party to end all parties', a huge bonfire, and masked Skeklers {guizers} marched through the toons with lit torches. Imbolc or Oimelc means 'ewes milk': pregnant ewes in europe started lactating at this time and folk drank a mixture of sheep's milk, honey and in some areas, mashed apples.Round foods {pancakes, bannnocks, oatcakes etc} signified the returning sun, waking and warming the earth. {So we should really have some Feta cheese on the bannocks in Halls!} Wishing you all the best Lesley! icepick239
Purely as a matter of interest, Ghostrider in the slums, whit is dy idea o' a spree to attend or get involved in?It involves women, or at least a woman, beyond that the Mods would pull any further description as being imappropriate for this site. There are many women in Viking mythology. Eagor, the wife of Aegir, Angrboda, mistress of Loki, Frigg or Frigga or Fricka, Jarnsaxa, Thors wife, Gunnlod, daughter of Odin, the Valkyrie, the three catigories of men, borne of Edda, Amma, Snor, Modir, Erna. Syignyn, Lokis wife, Luonnotar who gave birth to Vainamoinen, Audhumla, the primeval cow, Gullfaxi, the Golden Mare. The Finns had Meilikki, Tuulikki, Tuonetar and Tytto (Goddess of Illness)Some braver than the maleSo, someone that might be suitable for a Ness Man - noo let me see mmm..Gunnlod - seems promising?Gullfax - the golden mare? - No?Ok den, it's back to the start - and it's gotta be Eagor.Remember Ghosty, Paradise ends at 8am
